Dan Reynolds and Courtney Hattan conducted a systematic review of studies using baseball as a proxy for knowledge necessary for reading comprehension. Such claims were put to the test!

Bio-Dan Reynolds is an influential educational researcher best known for his contributions to the study of reading comprehension and literacy. Along with his colleague Lauren Leslie, Reynolds co-authored the landmark Baseball Study in 1987, which explored the impact of background knowledge on comprehension. In the study, students with prior knowledge of baseball were able to better understand and recall a passage about the sport, regardless of their reading ability. This groundbreaking research revealed the critical role that familiarity with content plays in the ability to comprehend texts, challenging the traditional view that reading ability alone determines comprehension. Reynolds’ work has had a lasting impact on literacy research, underscoring the importance of integrating students’ prior knowledge and interests into reading instruction.
