Now a lot of"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":57.24,"endTime":60.39,"body":"people tend to think that I have"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":57.24,"endTime":60.39,"body":"run for titles before that I"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":60.39,"endTime":64.86,"body":"made a run for IML, or that I've"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":60.39,"endTime":64.86,"body":"held some local title. That is"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":64.86,"endTime":68.73,"body":"technically not true, it is true"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":64.86,"endTime":68.73,"body":"that I was Florida leather, sir"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":68.73,"endTime":72.57,"body":"2020. But in case"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":105.33,"endTime":109.23,"body":"you've never judged a leather"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":105.33,"endTime":109.23,"body":"title contest, it is also a lot"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":109.29,"endTime":114.3,"body":"of work. We had six contestants,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":109.29,"endTime":114.3,"body":"which for a local title is"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":114.3,"endTime":119.13,"body":"really a lot. Normally you're"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":114.3,"endTime":119.13,"body":"lucky to get three. So to have"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":119.13,"endTime":124.2,"body":"six was really a boon. And they"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":119.13,"endTime":124.2,"body":"were really good contestants, I"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":124.2,"endTime":127.62,"body":"was impressed with all of them."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":124.2,"endTime":127.62,"body":"And I'm not just saying that I"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":127.62,"endTime":131.61,"body":"have high standards. And so the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":145.32,"endTime":148.35,"body":"culture gets reproduced. And as"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":145.32,"endTime":148.35,"body":"part of that, there are all"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":148.35,"endTime":152.58,"body":"these little secret rituals you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":148.35,"endTime":152.58,"body":"may not know about. So here are"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":152.58,"endTime":156.06,"body":"a couple of the secrets in case"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":152.58,"endTime":156.06,"body":"you're ever considering running"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":156.06,"endTime":159.36,"body":"for title and a lot of it has to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":156.06,"endTime":159.36,"body":"do with the interview with the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":159.36,"endTime":161.85,"body":"judges. The interview is"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":159.36,"endTime":161.85,"body":"something that takes place"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":162.06,"endTime":166.62,"body":"outside of the regular contests,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":162.06,"endTime":166.62,"body":"usually behind closed doors. So you place a chair in"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":174.0,"endTime":178.17,"body":"front of the judges and you wait"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":178.2,"endTime":182.46,"body":"to see whether or not the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":178.2,"endTime":182.46,"body":"contestant sits in it. Let me"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":182.46,"endTime":187.86,"body":"tell you don't sit in the chair."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":182.46,"endTime":187.86,"body":"That is a big faux pas,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":187.92,"endTime":191.67,"body":"apparently, another one which we"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":187.92,"endTime":191.67,"body":"didn't quite experience, but"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":191.67,"endTime":195.0,"body":"which some of the others talked"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":191.67,"endTime":195.0,"body":"about is removing your hat"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":195.03,"endTime":199.56,"body":"indoors. This comes in part,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":195.03,"endTime":199.56,"body":"from military culture and from"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":199.86,"endTime":203.34,"body":"military rules around covers and"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":199.86,"endTime":203.34,"body":"things like that. There are all"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":203.34,"endTime":207.06,"body":"these secret formalities you may"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":203.34,"endTime":207.06,"body":"not know about. Now, they don't"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":207.06,"endTime":211.59,"body":"make a huge difference on the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":207.06,"endTime":211.59,"body":"judging sheet. In the category"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":211.62,"endTime":216.3,"body":"of manners, I had five points to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":211.62,"endTime":216.3,"body":"distribute. And a lot of that"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":216.3,"endTime":218.91,"body":"was dependent on whether or not"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":216.3,"endTime":218.91,"body":"the contestants created the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":218.91,"endTime":221.76,"body":"judges whether or not they"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":218.91,"endTime":221.76,"body":"thanked us at the end. But it"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":221.76,"endTime":224.85,"body":"was also dependent on the secret"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":221.76,"endTime":224.85,"body":"chair and whether or not you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":224.85,"endTime":229.26,"body":"chose to sit. I like to say"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":248.1,"endTime":251.28,"body":"when you know there were seven"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":248.1,"endTime":251.28,"body":"judges and six contestants, we"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":251.28,"endTime":254.19,"body":"had 15 minutes with each"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":251.28,"endTime":254.19,"body":"contestant. So we were in that"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":254.19,"endTime":257.22,"body":"room for hours. But it was also"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":254.19,"endTime":257.22,"body":"a very tight schedule. We"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":257.22,"endTime":261.03,"body":"couldn't spend a lot of time"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":257.22,"endTime":261.03,"body":"talking to each contestant. And"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":261.03,"endTime":264.99,"body":"each judge got to ask one, maybe"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":261.03,"endTime":264.99,"body":"two questions. When it got to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":264.99,"endTime":269.07,"body":"me, I would say I'm going to ask"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":264.99,"endTime":269.07,"body":"the hard question. And I'm going"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":269.07,"endTime":271.89,"body":"to give it to you now as you can"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":269.07,"endTime":271.89,"body":"kind of test how well you might"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":271.89,"endTime":275.91,"body":"do. But for three reasons."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":280.74,"endTime":285.18,"body":"First, I wanted to see how well"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":280.74,"endTime":285.18,"body":"these contestants knew about"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":285.18,"endTime":288.21,"body":"conversations taking place in"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":285.18,"endTime":288.21,"body":"the community nationally,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":288.63,"endTime":292.23,"body":"because this title does feed"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":288.63,"endTime":292.23,"body":"into IML and they are going to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":292.23,"endTime":296.67,"body":"be on this national stage."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":292.23,"endTime":296.67,"body":"Second, I wanted to see how well"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":296.67,"endTime":300.51,"body":"they navigated the tricky"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":296.67,"endTime":300.51,"body":"currents of cancer canceled"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":300.51,"endTime":304.14,"body":"culture and social media."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":300.51,"endTime":304.14,"body":"Because once you have any title,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":304.17,"endTime":308.34,"body":"if you post the wrong thing, not"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":304.17,"endTime":308.34,"body":"only can you damage yourself,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":308.49,"endTime":311.79,"body":"you can damage the bar and you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":308.49,"endTime":311.79,"body":"can damage the local community."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":312.69,"endTime":316.11,"body":"The third thing I was interested"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":312.69,"endTime":316.11,"body":"in is how they would respond if"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":316.11,"endTime":320.22,"body":"they didn't know the answer to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":316.11,"endTime":320.22,"body":"something. Because as a title"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":320.22,"endTime":322.83,"body":"holder, you're likely to get"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":320.22,"endTime":322.83,"body":"interviewed in any number of"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":322.83,"endTime":326.97,"body":"media outlets. And sometimes you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":322.83,"endTime":326.97,"body":"just don't know the answer. So"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":326.97,"endTime":330.36,"body":"how do you handle that? So those"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":326.97,"endTime":330.36,"body":"are my three goals. What do you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":330.36,"endTime":332.94,"body":"know about what's going on"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":330.36,"endTime":332.94,"body":"nationally? How do you handle"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":332.94,"endTime":336.09,"body":"Kancil? Culture? How do you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":332.94,"endTime":336.09,"body":"handle situation where you don't"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":336.09,"endTime":342.78,"body":"know the question? Here is the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":336.09,"endTime":342.78,"body":"question I asked them. You're at"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":342.78,"endTime":349.38,"body":"to Shay's 45th anniversary"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":342.78,"endTime":349.38,"body":"party. What do you do? Now, none"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":349.38,"endTime":353.34,"body":"of the contestants really got"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":349.38,"endTime":353.34,"body":"it, because none of them knew"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":353.34,"endTime":356.79,"body":"what took place to Shay's 45th"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":353.34,"endTime":356.79,"body":"anniversary party. And you may"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":356.79,"endTime":361.2,"body":"not know either to che is a"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":356.79,"endTime":361.2,"body":"leather bar in Chicago."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":361.23,"endTime":364.17,"body":"Obviously, it's been around for"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":361.23,"endTime":364.17,"body":"45 years, and for their"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":364.17,"endTime":368.46,"body":"anniversary party, they had"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":364.17,"endTime":368.46,"body":"booked a puppet show, which is"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":368.49,"endTime":371.55,"body":"bizarre in and of itself, you"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":368.49,"endTime":371.55,"body":"don't normally think about"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":371.55,"endTime":375.99,"body":"puppet shows at leather bars."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":371.55,"endTime":375.99,"body":"But be that as it may, it turned"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":375.99,"endTime":380.4,"body":"out to be a puppet show that had"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":375.99,"endTime":380.4,"body":"racist and transphobic elements"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":380.4,"endTime":384.45,"body":"as well as some jokes about rape"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":380.4,"endTime":384.45,"body":"the audience, some of them were"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":384.45,"endTime":388.41,"body":"heckling, the puppeteer, who"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":384.45,"endTime":388.41,"body":"instead of backing down, doubled"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":388.44,"endTime":392.13,"body":"down. And a lot of this was"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":388.44,"endTime":392.13,"body":"caught on video and posted to"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":392.13,"endTime":397.05,"body":"social media. It caused a huge"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":392.13,"endTime":397.05,"body":"outrage in the community in"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":397.05,"endTime":400.38,"body":"relation to questions of"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":397.05,"endTime":400.38,"body":"diversity, equity and inclusion,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":400.56,"endTime":403.26,"body":"which is one of the most"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":400.56,"endTime":403.26,"body":"important conversations taking"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":403.26,"endTime":409.44,"body":"place in the community today. It"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":403.26,"endTime":409.44,"body":"was all of my Facebook for about"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":409.44,"endTime":413.64,"body":"a week, people posting about it,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":409.44,"endTime":413.64,"body":"reacting to it, posting new"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":413.64,"endTime":418.5,"body":"information. I didn't chime in a"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":413.64,"endTime":418.5,"body":"lot, because what I liked was"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":418.5,"endTime":422.19,"body":"the way that Chicago as a local"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":418.5,"endTime":422.19,"body":"community took care of the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":422.19,"endTime":426.39,"body":"situation. There were reactions"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":422.19,"endTime":426.39,"body":"from the local clubs who pulled"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":426.39,"endTime":429.66,"body":"out their business, who made"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":426.39,"endTime":429.66,"body":"statements, there was a demand"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":429.66,"endTime":432.9,"body":"for accountability from the bar."},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":429.66,"endTime":432.9,"body":"They were planned for community"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":432.9,"endTime":435.9,"body":"meeting, they took care of"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":432.9,"endTime":435.9,"body":"business, but the larger"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":435.9,"endTime":441.9,"body":"questions remain diversity,"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":435.9,"endTime":441.9,"body":"equity inclusion. Now, a couple"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":441.9,"endTime":444.87,"body":"of the candidates simply said, I"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":441.9,"endTime":444.87,"body":"don't know. And I'm like, Thank"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":444.87,"endTime":451.02,"body":"you, that is a perfectly fine"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":444.87,"endTime":451.02,"body":"answer. The best candidates that"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":451.02,"endTime":455.49,"body":"best contestants, after the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":451.02,"endTime":455.49,"body":"interview, went and found the"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":455.49,"endTime":459.21,"body":"answer and came back to us as"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":455.49,"endTime":459.21,"body":"judges and said, Here's what I"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":459.21,"endTime":463.11,"body":"learned. That's also a great"},{"speaker":"Edge ","startTime":459.21,"endTime":463.11,"body":"trick.
