Tales from the wild, stories from the heart. A journey into the mind and soul of fired up business professionals, where they share their vision for the future and hear from a different non-profit organization every month as they create awareness of their goals and their needs. Dive into a world of untamed passion as we join our host, Shireen Botha, for this month's episode of Friends from Wild Places.

Shireen Botha:

As you know, listeners, friends from Wild Places, we love to support a non-profit every month. A non-profit every month. This is our time to be able to reach out and give a helpline to someone in need, or to give ways to support your community, or just ways to put your mind on others instead of yourself, because I do think that's the key in life, especially when it comes to bringing just being happy. It's to be selfless is to be happy, and if there's a place, a non-profit, an institution that you believe in what they're doing for their community, I absolutely encourage you to invest your time, your finances, however you can, to make a difference. I think that's very important. So, with that being said, this month's nonprofit is going to be techgirlpowerorg. We're going to have that information in the show notes, don't worry. But, angeline, won't you tell us a little bit about this organization, how we can support it and, more importantly, what they do for the community?

Angeline Gillings:

Right. So Girl Power is a nonprofit organization led by Amaka Amalu. I got to know about this project through my sister. It's part of her corporate. They are giving back and this business is actually listed on their thing actually in Miami. They are focused on the underserved young women in the community and it's all about tech. So tech power how can you use technology to advance yourself and what your skill set is.

Angeline Gillings:

So, for example, there is next week. There is a one-week workshop for the women in the community. They're going to be mentorship and it's virtual, so mentorship talks from persons within the community. And, what I am actually very excited about, there is a pitch competition for these young women to come up with a project, what would be a viable project. They'll get support in terms of giving them advice using AI. So the last two days are going to be focused on this pitch competition from these girls or young women in the community how they can use AI for a business, starting a business.

Angeline Gillings:

I am hoping to be there in person. It's simple that I may be a judge, but it's not finalized yet. But even for me, it's just being there, just watching them and being a part of that energy. See the excitement of what these persons who are underprivileged but they have sharp minds and they just want a door to be open for them. Yeah, so I think next week is really going to be exciting, and it's just one of many of the initiatives that Tech Girl Power is about.

Shireen Botha:

And is there a way that we can support them?

Angeline Gillings:

uh, I I the link you can put in in the um in the podcast. I don't have it in front of me, but there's a link that is available for that and you can donate for support right, yes, oh yeah, definitely, oh yes, definitely. And I, I would add, I would encourage if, if you are donating, to actually see that it's coming from Friends from Wild Places, right?

Shireen Botha:

right, I'd love that.

Angeline Gillings:

Yeah, that would be good because this is the platform in which they would have seen it, so I look forward to persons supporting and making donations there.

Shireen Botha:

Thank you very much for sharing Angeline, much appreciated. All right listeners. Before we get into the fun and lighthearted part of the podcast, with a little bit of a game, tanya, do you have any last-minute questions to ask Angeline before we move?

Tanya Scotece:

on. So, angeline, I have heard you speak before and I think you're still doing speaker, guest speakers and keynote speeches and things of that nature. Can you share with our listeners what opportunities they could hire you for as far as speaking engagements?

Angeline Gillings:

Okay, great. So I've been excited to speak. I spoke about college students. I've been going to college conferences, regional conferences. I spoke at Yale University early in the year by us, the judges, giving a quick talk on different areas. I spoke about innovation.

Angeline Gillings:

So there are opportunities for speaking within colleges and school districts generally about inspirational, motivational talks. One of the popular ones that I have is Shining Bright. That was really. How do you shine? You don't have to dim someone else's light for your light to shine. Messages like those. I've been doing that and that's one topic.

Angeline Gillings:

Multi-generations how do we and that's one topic multi-generations how do we the multi-generations in the workplace? Interestingly, that topic serves two sides. It serves the younger generation, who is going into the workplace with these lofty, what seems to be sometimes out of the way expectations out of the way expectations and also those who are in the business and having these young people coming in and wondering where are these people? What, what? You know? They're coming with these crazy ideas and expectations. How do we get them to work together?

Angeline Gillings:

So that's another example of a topic that I have and it works well with the younger generation, the students, the emerging leaders, and works well with those who are in the workplace and finding it very difficult to how to collaborate very effectively with the younger generation. So those are opportunities. So there's speaking, there's workshop, so there could be a half day workshop, full day workshop. There's training that I do around a lot of the topics that relate to inspiration, motivation and just emerging to be your best self, because when you are your best self, then you can give of your best for the workplace and for yourself and family. Wow.

Tanya Scotece:

Yeah, and what are some maybe just some takeaways from this podcast, angeline, that you could share with our listeners, as far as what you do to replenish that cup, well, how do you read? You know, refill. What do you do? Is there, you know? Do you watch movies? Do you? What do you do? What's what's your go-to?

Angeline Gillings:

Okay, so I like to walk. I walk by the lake. Um, I like I haven't been doing it very well because it's so hot, I have to get up really early in the morning and I'm not doing as well as I was doing, but I like to walk by the lake. I love listening to music. I love, I say, lying by the beach, and I say lying by the beach because I don't swim, but I just like being by the water. It's like it's calming and, um, and I love my family. I just love being with my family, and especially now with my, my granddaughter. Oh, congratulations, it's joy overload. Now, yes, that's awesome.

Shireen Botha:

That's awesome. Thank you for sharing. Yes, thank you, angeline. Uh, so, yeah, now we're gonna play a little bit of a game, just to end on a light-hearted um beat. So I don't know if you late. I know, tanya, and I played it before. Uh, angeline, have you ever played two truths and a lie?

Angeline Gillings:

before. Uh, angeline, have you ever played two truths and a lie? No, I think I've heard it?

Shireen Botha:

no, but I've never played it. Yeah. So basically, you have to mention two truths about yourself and then mix up one lie that's not true, one statement that's not true, amongst the, the two true statements, and we myself and tanya have to pick out the, the statement that's not true, out of those right, and let's see if we can get it right. Is that the aim of the game is to try and get it right? Um, and then I'll go, and then Tanya will go. So, angeline, do you want to start or do you want one of us to start?

Angeline Gillings:

You start so that I can get into the rhythm.

Shireen Botha:

Awesome. Okay, so my three statements are I have been chased by an elephant. I have been, I walked from France to Spain and I have jumped out of an airplane. Which one is the lie? Tanya and Jalene, should we go with you first? Which one do you think is the lie?

Angeline Gillings:

I want. The one that scares me the most is jumping out of the air. I would go with that one, that one scares me the most so just because of that.

Tanya Scotece:

I'm going to say I don't know, chased by an elephant. You think that's the lie?

Shireen Botha:

yeah, okay, angelina's correct. I don't know chased by an elephant. You think that's the lie. Yeah, okay, angelina's correct.

Tanya Scotece:

The lie is I've never jumped out of an airplane.

Angeline Gillings:

Okay, okay, that is scary Right?

Shireen Botha:

Yeah, I actually would much rather jump out of an airplane and do a skydiving thing, then be chased by an elephant. That was way more scarier. Um, angeline, do you want to go next?

Angeline Gillings:

or tanya trying to find my lie, that's my problem tanya go ahead, all right.

Tanya Scotece:

so two truths and a lie, correct, please yes, please, okay. So here we go. I am afraid of spiders. I love bridges.

Shireen Botha:

And I speak Italian, no wait.

Tanya Scotece:

Repeat, repeat. Tanya, please, no wait, okay, repeat, repeat, please. So one is that I am afraid of spiders.

Shireen Botha:

I love bridges and my last one was you speak italian speak italian angeline, do you want to guess which one's the lie, or do you want me to go first?

Angeline Gillings:

oh, I am going to say afraid of spiders, spiders what about you, shireen?

Shireen Botha:

I. I want to say, yeah, I'm gonna say spiders is a lie as well, because I think you can speak italian and I think you do love bridges okay, you are.

Tanya Scotece:

Both are correct. You are correct, you are correct. Great job, great job. All right Off to you, angeline.

Angeline Gillings:

All right, so here it goes. I'm a scientist, I have started a fire alarm at a hotel. I speak Spanish.

Tanya Scotece:

What was the second one, Angeline?

Angeline Gillings:

I started a fire alarm at a hotel.

Shireen Botha:

I'm going to say the lie is you're a scientist.

Angeline Gillings:

I'm going to say number three about spanish. Okay, drum roll.

Tanya Scotece:

Uh, tanya is the winner yay, I don't speak Spanish, I mean, I think I don't.

Shireen Botha:

That was. That was so silly of me, because I think everyone that lives in the in the US knows how to speak Spanish that's a silly.

Angeline Gillings:

No, no see. And worse in Miami, yeah, I should.

Tanya Scotece:

I'm still trying to learn myself. Yeah, I gotta venture into the Spanish world.

Shireen Botha:

Oh my gosh. Well, that's gonna be my I'm. I've decided that's gonna be my second language. I'm gonna learn is spanish. So yeah, oh my gosh, guys, thank you so much. Yes, so we've come to the end of the podcast, where it's the time to just give the listeners some form, a way to contact you if they feel really inspired by your story, angeline, or even if they want to reach out to myself or to Tanya. I have actually done over 10 cases for expert witness in the past 12 months, so for funeral home and cemetery cases, for funeral home and cemetery cases. So that is, if anyone has any situation involving a funeral home or cemetery, I'm happy to serve as an expert witness in those cases.

Tanya Scotece:

My blessed work is helping our senior community find safe assisted living facilities, as I like to say communities. So I do specialize in dementia and people that have challenges with loved ones, with any of the dementias. Alzheimer's is the most popular one, so most people think of dementia as Alzheimer's, but Alzheimer's is only one of the dementias. There's many different types and I call it my blessed work. We are a free placement agency. We get paid directly by the community and my territory is the east and west coast of Florida.

Tanya Scotece:

And, lastly, I do serve as the program coordinator and full-time professor at Miami Dade College in the funeral service program.
