I wanted to reframe the patient care journey and, and, and empower the patient care journey. So. I would later develop what is now called the Harkins method in that, that is your, uh, drug free protocol to accelerate traumatic brain injury, concussion and stroke by leveraging neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. But it's all built around neuro fitness training. We're reframing the patient care journey. It's like we're athletes and we're training for recovery. We put on the mindset for healing daily and we have a good time doing it.

Brittany:Hi, I'm Brittany and a brain injury survivor and member of BIND.
Shawnee:I
Carrie:and hi, I'm Carrie, a stroke stroke survivor and member of BIND as well. And today we're excited to welcome Shawnee Hawkins. Um, she is also a multiple TBI survivor and she has created, um, the Hawkins method, which is, I'm gonna look at my papers. I don't say it wrong. An adaptive neuroplasticity, you know, we love that word. Mm-hmm. Driven protocol. To fast track recovery for brain injury survivors. So welcome Shawnee.
Shawnee:Thank you so much. Thank you Brittany Carey for having me here. It's so good to be back. The clubhouse looks beautiful and congrats on BIND waves.
Carrie:Well, thank you so much. Thank you. So just to get started, if you'll tell our listeners a little bit, Brittany,'cause she doesn't know you. Yes. A little bit about yourself and then just a little bit about your. Personal brain injury story in
Shawnee:Indeed. Yes. Yes. So I work in the world of brain health and all of the, my passion from what I do now. Is from my personal story of overcoming multiple traumatic brain injuries. So, um, uh, at age 18, 20 and 24, I suffered my three TBIs. Um, life threatening really did overcome some great, um, odds, um, to where I am now being on the other side of healing, bringing, um, support a program and a platform to provide recovery to fast track recovery through, through neuro fitness training. It's so awesome. Mm-hmm. All righty. So, um, were you into fitness or fitness training before your brain injury? I was actually, I was, um, I grew up an athlete, played basketball, uh, go boys and girls club, uh, ran track and um, I was raised by my dad, so I kind of grew up in the country and just love being outdoors. So I'll have to tell you that. In sustaining my first TBI, my athletic background had a lot to do with my mindset in, you know, understanding what's going on and then progressing forward. So I, and I love sports, you know, I rode women's out crew in college and Oh wow. And I'm still an endurance runner till this day. Yes, yes.
Carrie:So exciting. Okay, so, um. How long have you been teaching exercise classes? Did that start? When did that start?
Shawnee:So this started, so before I taught Neurore rehabilitation focused recovery through neuro fitness training. I was a Hollywood trainer in my twenties out in California, um, on television. Worked, worked, um, in, in television, film, entertainment. Um, worked with professional athletes as well. Uh, so I was a personal trainer. After I was a firefighter at EMT, fell in love with personal training and from there, and I had a beautiful career in Hollywood. I mean, I worked really hard after my TBIs to get there. I was really grateful and thankful to be there. But that Hollywood, uh, fitness background would be a great foundation and the stepping stone to the neuro fitness training that I do now. Sure.
Carrie:I do have to tell you, Jeff found your, um. Shake weight commercials the other day. We won't, we won't link that in, in the bio.
Shawnee:It was Stepping Stones. Yeah, no, it, it was great. But, but I will tell you, it's, it's, it is, that is, that's a funny, good time. But I will tell you that shit, working with the Shake Weight brand was my first time to develop a big program. For a brand and to see it take off and do well and, and provide transformation by way of the shake weights. So, uh, good times. Yeah. That's funny. That's what it says. It's like, oh, did I really do that? Yeah. Yeah. Very fun. Very fun. So what led you to create your, um, exercise program? Yes. Well, I will tell you, um, a lot of it had to do with my personal struggles. As we all know, when you are overcoming a traumatic brain injury or stroke, it's not just the organ itself, the brain that you're focused on. The, the rehabilitation journey affects every part of your life. And for me, as a young person. I mean, it affected me mentally, emotionally, spiritually, obviously physically, but then you start tapping into financially, socially, relationally, all the leads, right? All the things. And from there. Is really where I started to just think there has to be a better way. Um, uh, and also with my doctors back at age 18, 20 and 24, when they were kind of like, this is as good as it gets Shawnee. Um, that was, uh, kind of defeating to hear. And so with my athletic background later moving into personal training and learning, and I, I myself became obsessed with. How can I help myself recover and heal myself if my doctors are kind of like, we've, we've done all we can do for you. So that's when, way back then I started realizing, discovering what is now neuroplasticity and how we can, um, you know, rebuild those neuro pathways. Mm-hmm. So my inspiration and my passion for what I teach now really come from my story, but as I was a young person in my early twenties. You know, focused on nutrition, supplementation, sleep, you know, how do these lifestyle adapt changes? How, how do they, um, help my brain function better? How do they help me improve my cognitive function? How do they help me with my mood and maybe my emotional regulation for the day or my, my, my energy? You know? And so as I started to see these little things that I was learning and was kind of. What I did was create the program for myself, and as I was seeing this program was working for me. Then later, the years later when I would become a celebrity trainer and I was developing programs mm-hmm. For the shake weight in different brands and different companies and trainers. It just hit me one day because I had been in several neuro rehabilitation facilities and I thought. Where is the fitness portion to helping me get better? Um, as we all know, um, we, we are, we're so grateful and thankful for our OT therapy and our PT therapy and our CBT therapy, right? The speech. But what happens when you get out of therapy and you're just kind of at home and you're sitting on your couch or in your bed? And so that is the problem I wanted to solve.
Carrie:No, and that's great. And you know, you've heard us say here at BIND all the time, that we know recovery is lifelong, that we're. We're always gonna be in recovery mode. That's just part of life after brain injury, you know? Yes, we're always working, but also that's good. We have the rest of our life to continue to recover. Yes. So we do know. That's good. But I, we had an interesting question. What was, or was there one activity that was like your first activity that. Its really inspired you to go, okay, this is gonna be the base of my program, or this is how we're gonna do it. Yes. Was there like one, like, or what was that Aha moment, I guess for sure. Absolutely. So I would say there's two. Um, the first one is, is what the Harkins method is built on, and that's on mindset. So the Harkins method, we train your mind, brain, and body in unison to create that new neural pathway that that neuroplasticity. But when I tapped into my mindset many years ago when I was in the thick of my traumatic brain injuries. And I tapped into visualization and mental imagery while I was laying in that patient bed. Not able to move or function or speak, but I started visualizing myself in that moment, already healed, taking my steps of forward progress, becoming a firefighter. When I was age 18, I had not become a wildland firefighter yet visualizing myself as a firefighter, fighting fires while I was still in the hospital after I was given my grim prognosis and diagnosis. So the power of visual visualization and mindset is, is one thing because I saw it working for me. The second is our neuro boxing program that we actually brought here to bin several years ago. And I love our neuro boxing program because one, I mean, everyone's familiar with boxing, whether you throw a punch or not, people know BA boxing. But then if you can. Create an adaptive neural boxing program that trains your mind, your brain, and your body in one. You are having a great time, but you're working on your cognitive function, your memory, your speech, your communication, your balance, your coordination, fine motor function, gross motor function, your um, you know, you're balancing out your heart rate, your blood pressure, oxygenation, building strength. But you're feeling good, you're feeling empowered, you know, it helps with our mood, but at the same time, we're increasing dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, all neurochemicals and neurotransmitters that contribute to brain health. So when I started seeing the neuro boxing program take off in a hospital clinical environment, working with acute neuro patients. Day neuro patients outpatients to even hear it BIND with our volunteers and our members here to really like beautiful gyms where we are power packing it with big classes to even online via Zoom group classes and individually, and everyone seemed to have the same flow. I'm getting better. And I'm having a good time doing something new and it's empowering me. And I will say that the neuro boxing program is kind of our gateway program to seeing results kind of quickly. And then once someone, just like when we lose weight, when we lose those first five to 10 pounds, we're like. All right. I'm looking pretty good. I'm gonna keep at this. I find the same thing with the neuro boxing program. When you start seeing results, your, your cognition is sharper. You're just feeling better, you're sleeping better. Maybe you're losing some medication weight or some weight from being sedentary, and you just start seeing your identity shift. That's the power. Yeah.
Brittany:So for your program, um, is it for anyone with any type of brain injury?
Shawnee:Indeed it is. Yes. Yes. I'm so glad you asked for these. So it is for anyone who suffered, of course, TBI, concussion or stroke, and our caregivers too. I wanna emphasize that we focus on our caregivers. We have a whole health and fitness program dedicated to them.'cause if we can empower our caregivers, then they pour into their loved ones and we set them up for a success as well. But I also. Sends the program to anyone who's focused on neurodegenerative disease prevention, so Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, um, Huntington's Disease, uh, dementia. When, when we, you know, we have that aging brain, we wanna keep it sharp and, and, you know, take care of that brain body connection. So the program is really open to anyone who's focused on brain health prevention or recovery.
Carrie:Okay. And so we, this, I'm gonna say this a little different. Um, we kind of touched on this, but yes. So the FIT program is created basically to enhance traditional therapy. It's not a replacement, correct? Yes. Of traditional therapy, it's, it's either maybe after the traditional recovery rehab is done or in conjunction with, I guess, yes. It could be either or, or both, or, yes.
Shawnee:Um. The neuro fitness program is a, is, is, uh, takes a team approach to recovery. The idea is that the neuro program comes in and compliments what you're already doing. And then, and then once the traditional therapies, you know, subside and we're discharged, you're not left with no one, right? So the idea is to set up that support, that plan, and that program from the very get go. So for instance, when my program was at Baylor Scott and White, um. Immediately with, with, uh, patients that were just, um, you know, brought to, brought to the facility, it was amazing to start working with them right away in acute care. And then follow their journey all the way through day, patient, outpatient, and into the gym. But then it's even fascinating to work with someone who's maybe their stroke was years ago, or their TBI was years ago. And then to pick them up, scoop them up, and then start the program with them, and then see that neuroplasticity take place, those results. So the idea is we're not replacing any healthcare by any means, but we're solving a problem. And that is what happens when a lot of this care around you stops. We don't want anyone to fall through the gaps, and we wanna continue to focus on progress and acceleration. Okay. Of healing.
Brittany:Yeah. Yeah. Um, so what point, uh, in the person's recovery do you recommend, um, starting the neuro fit program?
Shawnee:Actually right away? Uh, for instance, if someone's had a traumatic brain injury or right away, here's why. Because when the brain, when you've just had a TBI concussion or stroke, brain is full of inflammation. And through the neuro fitness training, even through the breath work, the mental imagery, the visualization, the positive affirmations, creating that lifestyle approach to your recovery around nutrition, supplementation, movement, your exercise, the goal is to bring down that inflammation. Um, and, and we focus on neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is a process of new neurons, so we wanna liven those neurons and then we wanna connect them and we want them talking to each other. And then we want them creating new neuro pathways around the inflamed damage pathways. And then we wanna enforce neuroplasticity where we are, um, creating a whole new network for information and signaling and movement and all this jazz. So the idea is to come in and scoop you up. As soon as you can move, as soon as you've been clear for exercise. Yeah. And again, it's um, it's personalized and customized, so when, whether it's a group setting. Or it's one-to-one with me. The idea is the program is personalized and customized for your diagnosis. What part of the, um, brain was injured? What are your current needs? What are your current goals? What's your, what's your lifestyle routine like? Who's taking care of you? What does that look like? I mean, it is so, uh, you know, from the inside out because we wanna take advantage of creating neuroplasticity seven days a week. Right? Yes.
Carrie:Okay. Now, and here's one of those questions that nobody really likes to ask, but we gotta ask. So, um, and that, I'm guessing it's probably a structured or a sliding scale, but like, what's the cost of it? Because if it's personalized and it's insurance help.
Brittany:So how does the Harken method help survivors recover cognitively and sustain independence?
Shawnee:I love that. I would tell you that the Harkins method originally is just built on improving identity because we all know that your identity is, you struggle, um, you know, when you've had kind of the, the rug pulled out from under you due to TBI or stroke. So the Harkins method is built to reset. The identity to give your identity back by training the mind, brain, and body. So all of our programming, uh, focuses on cognitive training and physical training. For instance, I want to improve your memory, short-term, long-term memory, your speech, your communication, your executive function skills. You know, I ask my clients when they start working with me, what's your number one goal? Do you wanna go back to work? Do you wanna go back to school? What do you wanna do when we're, when we're our, our journey is complete and you, you've recovered. And so, um, the program focuses on these, so it's called Neuro iq and it's a whole cognitive function program within the program that focuses on strengthening, um, these executive function, higher level thinking. Skills. And then we focus of course, on the body strengthening your body, focus on gait training, balance coordination, whatever it is. If you're transferring from a wheelchair to a cane, well the program is gonna focus on giving you the right exercises to accelerate that. So again, it's really customized. But then the other thing too. As we all know that part of the journey is overcoming anxiety, depression due to the injury itself, due to how it affects your lifestyle and everything else. We focus on that too. We want you literally getting up every day saying, I'm training for my recovery. I'm empowered today. In fact, I know exactly what I need to do. I'm gonna go do it, and then I'm gonna feel better. And every day that adds up that you're doing something that's contributing to your brain health, to your recovery. It's empowering, and then you stay in the game. You stay in the game. Yeah. And it gives you opportunities. So that's what the program is built on, is truly, um, taking a whole person approach to neuroplasticity. And we do that through training the mind, brain, and body daily.
Carrie:Okay. That's great. I'm gonna take a quick little break and just remind our listeners to go ahead and click that like button, click that share button, and if you're on YouTube, click that subscribe button or notify button. I don't remember which one. Just if it has a checkup, thumbs up, click it. That's always good. And then. It's back to you Shawnee. Yes. So as we were talking about, it's totally customizable per person. Yes. I guess there's like a sit down one-on-one time where, I mean, you said you know, you go through your goals, but is there like a No. What word? I'm trying to, like a questionnaire or something like that. Just so that kinda guide you to help you because again, you know, new survivor, old survivor. I wouldn't know what I wanna say my goals are. I mean, I would need some. Yes. Coaching on, so I'm guessing it's probably a pretty significant one-on-one time to figure all that out.
Shawnee:Indeed, yes. So for, if you want to work with me one-to-one, then you have a dedicated questionnaire that allows me to get to know you, learn about your, um, TBI or stroke or concussion. Um, learn about where life is. What it looks like for you right now. And so it's a questionnaire that it's kinda like us having a conversation and this questionnaire is walking you through your new pathway to work with me. From that, I'm able to extract all the information that I need for us then to speak by phone. Usually it's Zoom if we can't meet in person, and then that's our face-to-face time where I walk you through the questionnaire. I extract more information, I learn more, and then from there, that's how I develop the personalized and the customized program. For you. And if you, um, join Neuro FITT Training Club, there's also a special questionnaire for our members of Neuro FITT Training Club. Okay.'cause I still wanna learn about you. I,'cause I want the content to help you in your recovery, even though it's a membership, which is great. It's a membership towards getting better. So that's also, um, another questionnaire. But, but the, the idea of the program is for me to tap into what's going on and for me to try to fill in the gaps of what's missing, and then create a program to help you create that daily neurogenesis and that daily neuroplasticity. Okay. Alright.
Brittany:Um, what is the average length of your program?
Shawnee:So, the average, so I, I usually start working with everyone for about 14 weeks. So the new online, uh, program, neuro state of mine is 14 weeks long. But I would tell you my average Inc client, um, timeframe is usually a year. However, I'm still working with Kyle, um, and we're actually in December, we're entering into seven years working together. But I find that sweet spot where my clients. See results and they're able to go on and live their lives and make an impactful meaning and purpose is at that one year mark. Okay? Mm-hmm.
Carrie:And this is not a question that we have on here, but just while you were talking, I don't know why it popped in my head, but it did. So like I've seen, you know, the stuff you're doing with Kyle, um, if we're doing this one-on-one training, I understand probably the Zooms are a little different. You're at home, it's. Use whatever you have for weights. But if you're doing this one-on-one training yes. Is it at a gym? Do I have to get a gym membership too, or, I mean, I love all these questions. I mean,'cause I have to have a gym membership on top of this. Where am I getting this equipment? And then again yeah, just the membership one. Is that good? Old fashioned? Let me grab some cans or water jugs from the kitchen.
Shawnee:I love it. I love it. I love it. Okay, so let me answer your question. So right now I'll, I'll flag it one time. Sorry. No, I love it. I love it. So, uh, right now you would come to me at my gym and there's no membership. So it's, it's truly, um, a beautiful space for us to get down and get our, our work done. Um, and then if you are training, so I have several hybrid clients, uh, for instance, some out of towners who will come see me, and then I will continue their training program from the comfort of their own home via Zoom sessions. And then I set them up on their fitness apps and their nutrition apps. So it's, it's totally, um. Um, immersive. I make sure that they have the type of equipment that they would need at home. So you usually get, um, like a, a workout list. Okay. On Amazon. I need you to get these couple of things based on what our goals right now. Mm-hmm. And you'll use these, um, pieces of equipment from home for your program. And then as you advance, if I feel like you need this piece of equipment, we'll get that. But the idea is we. We make it as comfortable as we can at home. And then if you join Neuro FITT Training Club and you're, for instance, following our 30 day mindset movement challenge, I'll recommend you get some pieces of equipment, make it very, um, comfortable for you, and then you're ready to rock and roll. But the, the goal is that you just, you feel empowered. So you can either come to me, no membership costs, it's just included in your training with me, or neuro Fit training club, or neuro state of mind. And we just set you up with your workout equipment list. Mm-hmm.
Brittany:Can you tell us more about your online resources for brain injury survivors and or caregivers?
Shawnee:Yes. So inside of Neuro FITT Training Club, our online neuro fitness membership and community, right away when you join, I ask everyone to check out the first three, uh, workshops, resources, prerecorded. Because I wanna educate you on one, what is neurogenesis? So there's a whole workshop, a whole live video content focused on the power of neurogenesis for your recovery. And then you move into neuroplasticity. What is neuroplasticity? How can we leverage neuroplasticity for your recovery? Then we move into what, what is the Harkins method in neuro fitness training for TBI, concussion and stroke recovery? Consider, these are your core foundational courses, and then you move through these three courses inside of the Neuro FITT Training Club. We have a whole section dedicated to, uh, our brain and body yoga for survivors, and then brain and body yoga. Dedicated for caregivers. There's a Brain Health nutrition, um, program as well, and everyone who joins Neuro Fit Training Club gets their own personalized nutrition program too. So what I love is weekly and monthly. I just continue to fill the platform, neuro Fit training Club with uh, resources, tools, strategies that I know that's gonna help your mind, brain, and body. Because I'm also training my members. Let's focus on your ma mind, brain and body weekly, and then outside of the prerecorded content content that you can watch anytime from anywhere on demand. Then we have our weekly live coaching and training where we get on there and we have a great time. And then I'm really able to answer, um, my members, uh, questions. Um, we're able to train together, you know, practice training the mind together, training the brain, training the body, and, and it's, and it is, um, consistent. That's how we recover is when we stay consistent. So that's the goal of neuro FITT trading Clubs. So immediately when you join, there are all these tools, resources, and education for you right away to take advantage of. That's great.
Carrie:Um, so one thing, I'm gonna back it a little bit. Um, this is one of the member questions and I'm now, I'm not sure if I like how it's worded, so I'm just gonna ask it and then you can answer it how you see it. So how do you measure the benefits or how do you. See, I mean, you know, like I've watched, like I said, Kyle, you know, so I see the progress he's making, but how do you measure so that, you know, because you know, as a survivor even, you know, I can see little improvements, but even through this you may be seeing big improvements. Yes. Where I don't, I'm not seeing it.
Shawnee:Yes. I love this question. So, at the beginning, um, of every session, I call these wellbeing zones. So. There is a form that I would either fill out for you or we fill it out together, and I'm asking you, how are you feeling emotionally today, mentally, physically, spiritually? What's your pain level like? Is there anything neurologically I should know what's going on? Also, this helps me to modify that session for that day if I need to. And we go through our workout, and then after our workout, I give you the exact same wellbeing questions. And so you're able to see by you filling this out or us together. Oh. My scores are higher post-workout. I like this. But then we get even more detailed because we're focused on your cognitive function, your higher level thinking, your executive. So when you start training with me, I give you, it's not so much a test, but it is, it is that questionnaire, and then it's also through us working together. I'm also picking up quite a bit too of where you are, maybe with time management, with organization, reading, writing. Speaking memory, those kind of things. Now, your neuro IQ builds this program into every session. Every session. We're training your brain, if you will, so not only are you filling out your wellbeing zones where you're like, hmm. Okay. I, yeah. Alright. That makes sense. I do feel better, or I am remembering this better. I, I am actually able to organize my day better mm-hmm. Or strategize, but then I'm seeing it, and then once a month we're checking in, not just on your body, but we're checking in on your cognitive function. So, for instance, Kyle and the clients I've worked with, I mean, Kyle went from. Non-functioning, both hands to ambidextrous. He can write essays now about his recovery with both hands. So in our program, the idea is that, you know, I'm challenging on math, on spelling, on, um, grammar, on reading and writing on speech and communication because I wanna get you back out to the real world empowered. So every session builds upon training the brain as well as your body, and that's the power of where the neuro. Plasticity comes in because if I just focus on your physical part, that's great. You're gonna have results training with me on your physical part. But if I can back it up and start with your mind and your brain and then your body, this is actually how we're recovering and this is how I'm able to say, thankfully, by the grace of God, I'm a hundred percent healed now after all those TBIs, because this is the way I trained myself daily through neuroplasticity training. So you start to see over time your improvement, but it's also this partnership, this teamwork of, I'm noticing this improvement, are you, and then through your neuro IQ program, I'm giving you more brain training drills, and of course I wanna set you up for success, but if you were able to do this, and then I wanna advance you over here. Mm-hmm. Because we just wanna continue to challenge ourselves to get better and better and better. Okay. Yes, that makes sense. All righty.
Brittany:So, um, do you have any final piece of advice? You would like to leave with our listeners?
Shawnee:I do. I do. I do. Thank you, Brittany. You know, I would say the most important thing is wake up every morning, ready to train to get better. Um, I know through my personal experience and clients and patients I've worked with, you know, um, our mindsets can be challenged. You know, it can be a daily struggle. If you have a belief, a higher power spirit, one that sets you up for greatness every day. But if you can align your mind and your spirit together for your recovery, that's that's how you stay in the game and that's how you recover. So I would say for anyone who's struggling with depression or anxiety, does this get better? Find ways to encourage your mind, find ways to encourage your spirit and stay consistent with that daily. Yes. I love that.
Carrie:So Shawnee, thank you. Thank you so much for coming in today and talking to us. I love hearing from you. I love hearing what you're doing out there to help other survivors get better. And I do miss our boxing classes.
Shawnee:I know. I was thinking we should do over You. Did we? We gotta get it back. Jenny would be jealous. But yes. Thank you so much for coming in and sharing your story and sharing what you have to offer. Thank you so much. Thank you, Carrie. Britney. Thank you. Yeah. Maybe you come to Fort Worth too. Maybe. I would love that. Absolutely. Yes. It, it felt so good to drive into the parking lot and Oh, just good times. Thank you for having me. It's truly a blessing to be back here. We're excited to have you here. Yes.
