Consumerism And The American Dream
Black Identity, Wealth, and the American Dream
We examine the complex relationship between the "American Dream" and Black consumerism from the mid-20th century to the present. They highlight how advertisers initially framed Black Americans as a lucrative, untapped market, associating material possessions with prestige and social acceptance. Through analyses of works by Kanye West, Jay-Z, Tupac Shakur, and The Boondocks, the texts reveal a consistent critique of this consumerist narrative by Black artists, even as these figures often participate in the very system they question. The overarching theme explores whether accumulating wealth truly liberates Black Americans from systemic inequalities or simply reframes historical struggles within a more sophisticated commercial context, ultimately questioning the authenticity of progress versus the repackaging of old messages.
