Scriptures Referenced:

  • Lv 25: Canaanite people are descendants of Noah’s son Ham (Gn 9:18-25); the Lord has already established the death penalty for kidnapping foreigners as slaves (Ex 21:16), and the slavery discussed here instead pertains to paying off debt through servitude
  • Lv 26: 900 years later Israel will endure 70 years of Babylonian exile for failing to keep God’s required Sabbath years (2Ch 36:21)
  • Lv 27: We’ve already established that every person, as God’s image bearer, has equal value and is to be respected equally (Ex 30:13); The firstborn cannot be dedicated to they Lord because they already belong to Him (Ex 13:2); Hannah’s dedication of her son Samuel is a perfect example of this vow and dedication (1 Sm 1:11, 28)
  • Nm 2: These four banners surrounding the Tabernacle perfectly reflect the four living creatures around God’s throne (Ezk 1:10, Rv 4:7)
  • Nm 3: Jacob’s son Levi had three sons—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari (Ex 6:16); After Passover, all Hebrew firstborn became the Lord’s when spared from the angel of death (Ex 13:1); We see later that redeeming the firstborn at the Temple remained a requirement for Israel, as in the case of Mary and Joseph (Lk 2:22-23)
  • Nm 5: This ritual reflects both the guilt of those who drank the bitter waters of their golden idol (Ex 32:20), and the blessing of the waters at Marah (Ex 15:25). It also foreshadows the cup of judgement that Christ drank on our behalf (Mt 26:39)
  • Nm 6: It appears that the Apostle Paul and four other men voluntarily took the Vow (Ac 18:18, 21:23-24); Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were born into this lifelong Vow (Jdg 13:5, 1Sm 1:11, Lk 1:15); Some believe both the mothers of Samson and Samuel temporarily took the Vow (Jdg 13:4, 1Sm 1:15), and the entire Rechabite family may have lived bound to the Vow or one like it (Jr 35:6-7)
