Finding Ways To Beat The Heat On Your Homestead
Wow! I don’t know about you but the heat here in Florida has been unbearable! Upper 90’s is not that unusual, but the humidity feels like you can slice it with a knife!
When it gets this hot on the homestead, it means it is time to come up with new ways to try and beat the heat! And in todays episode that is exactly what we are going to do. We are going to talk about the many ways you can try and beat the heat on your homestead no matter what age you are.
Are you ready? Here we go!
Hi and welcome back to the Prepping Positively Podcast. I’m Annie and today we are talking about ways to beat the heat on the homestead.
Now just for the record, I am the one in the family that adores the hot and humid days! When everyone else is sweating their you know what’s off, I am lapping it up like a kitten lapping milk! I’m also the one who wears a hoodie at 70 degrees too.
However, in the summer, in July, specifically, in Central Florida, even the heat lovers like me are looking at ways to keep cool. Today I am sharing all the ideas and activities we do to keep cool.
And don’t worry about your age! Age means nothing when it comes to keeping cool!
So the normal things that most people think include:
- Swimming in a pool, river, lake or whatever body of water you can find.
- Taking a cool shower.
- Wearing a cooling cloth.
- Sitting in front of or under the fan.
- Taking a ride in an air conditioned car.
But those ideas are boring. I am 53, but have the heart of a 20 year old! So if I am gonna be cool, I wanna have fun doing it!
So if you want to have some fun with the kids or just a significant other, try some of these ideas…
- Have a water balloon fight.
- Make a slip and slide from old plastic shower curtains sewed together.
- Play badminton with water balloons!
- Cut up some sponges into skinny strips, gather the strips together, tie in the middle, then soak in a bucket and throw at each other!
- Keep a spray bottle with cool water and spray yourself as needed.
- Buy some water guns and battle it out.
- Play hot potato with a water filled balloon.
- Wet your head.
- Bob for apples.
Don’t want to play in the water? Here are some dry ideas…
- Find a super shady spot and have a picnic. Eat light and have plenty of ice and drinks on hand.
- Pick your favorite store and do some window shopping.
- Eat a popsicle, grab a cold drink and sit on a swing.
- Dress light and as minimal as possible.
- Take off those shoes! When the sweat on your feet evaporates it cools the skin and sends blood to the rest of your body, thus making you feel cooler.
- Eat spicy foods, yep, when you eat a spicy pepper and start to sweat, the sweat cools you as it evaporates.
- Drink some water, then more water and more water! Stay hydrated.
- Avoid caffeine, sugar, and alcohol!
- Put a sock filled with rice in the freezer and use as a cold pack.
- Use essential oils, specifically spearmint and peppermint.
- When it cools off in the evening, go outside and get some fresher, cooler air.
How about around your home
- Leave the oven and the dishwasher off.
- Switch your light bulbs to LED’s
- Reverse the fan on your ceiling to blow down.
- Don’t run the dryer, instead, hang your clothes.
- Be sure if you take a hot shower you have a vent to remove the humidity from the room.
- Let your hair airdrop instead of using the hairdryer.
- Keep blackout curtains on thin uninsulated windows and keep em closed during the hottest part of the day.
And lastly….be naked! That’s right, if it’s just you or just you and a significant other…take off those clothes and enjoy being the way you were made to be!
I hope this gave you some great ways to beat the heat on your homestead while the weather is so hot! Until next week…stay cool!
