The system simply revealed the rest of the truth. That moment isn't really about money. It's about consent. It's about trust. It was the total cost of exchange. You saw the price, you evaluated it, and you either agreed or walked away. Simple, clean, honest. But modern pricing fractured that clarity. Today price is no longer a conclusion, it's an opening statement. What we now call price is often a base number before tax, before fees, before surcharges, before convenience costs, before platform transactions. In the United States especially, this fragmentation is normalized. We're told it's because taxes vary, because fees are external, because systems are complex, but complexity is not the same as inevitability. Other countries solved this problem decades ago by deciding that the price should still mean the total cost. The US chose a different path, not because it had to, but because it benefited a certain model more than others. The American system prioritizes business flexibility over consumer clarity. Prices are displayed without taxes so companies can standardize marketing, shift responsibility, adjust margins invisibly. This creates a subtle power imbalance. The seller knows the full cost, the buyer does not, until the final step. And by then, walking away feels inconvenient, awkward, irrational. That's not an accident. That's behavioral advantage. The system is built around the assumption that once you're close enough to the finish line, you'll accept almost anything to avoid restarting. And that's psychologically designed. Behavioral economics explains this perfectly. Your brain anchors to the first number it sees. That numbers become the reference point for fairness. When the final number appears, your brain doesn't ask, is this right? It asks, is this difference tolerable? Most of the time it is. Not because you agree, but because disagreement requires effort. This is why airline tickets look cheap until checkout. Even tickets double in price through fees. Delivery apps quietly inflate totals. Subscriptions hide real monthly costs. You're not being tricked in the cartoon sense. You're being guided. The base price is designed to secure emotional commitment. The added costs are designed to be revealed after resistance drops. This is not deception, it's persuasion engineering. Now let's talk about the exception that exposes the rule: gas stations. Fuel prices include tax, are displayed publicly, are heavily regulated, and are updated frequently. Why? Because gasoline is a higher frequency purchase. People buy it often. They compare prices instinctively. And they react immediately to dishonesty. If gas stations separated base price and taxes at the pump, trust would collapse overnight. Transparency isn't moral victory here, it's a survival requirement. Which means, or it raises the question, one important question, if pricing transparency works for fuel, why doesn't it work everywhere else? Because in most industries, Confucian is profitable. Fees are not accessories to pricing anymore. They are the pricing strategy. Fees do three things, three critical things, that is. They keep advertised prices artificially low. They protect brands from blame. They obscure the real comparisons. When a consumer complains, the company says, that's a third-party fee. That's a service charge. That's not the price, it's the system. The base price sells the dream. The fees collect the money. This allows companies to raise revenue without ever increasing prices. And over time, consumers stop asking what the thing costs, and they simply just tolerate it and simply pay that price. That shift matters. It really does. And that should be alarming to us all.
