Ep 2: Friday Q&A
Show Notes

It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for another question-and-answer session! Before we get into some great listener questions, we give you a quick rundown of why puppies often have tummy issues when you first bring them home, and we share some very simple strategies you can use to alleviate these. We then get into how to introduce a new puppy to an established dog (hint: do not do it inside!), how to prevent puppies from eating mud, excessively licking, or humping other dogs (you can’t be a pushover in these scenarios!), why I choose not to use supplements to initiate heat if a dog misses a cycle and lots more. My approach is a holistic one, which is built on a foundation of respect for canines, and I hope this episode helps make your journey with your new puppy, or your breeding dogs, a whole lot smoother and more enjoyable for you and them!

  • Why you need to wait 9 weeks before changing your puppy’s food.
  • What you should be using instead of training treats.
  • How to (and how not to) respond when a puppy has something in its mouth that it shouldn't.
  • Power of the “puppy, puppy, puppy” call.
  • Advice for introducing a new puppy to an older dog.
  • Why I don’t recommend putting dogs on B-Strong supplements to initiate a heat cycle.
  • My perspective on sending dogs to retirement homes.
  • Tips for preventing dogs from eating mud and poop, humping, licking, and other unwanted behavior.
  • Your role as a breeder, and how to fulfill this role.
  • How to make your puppy feel more comfortable around other dogs.
  • Why consequences need to be given immediately after the unwanted behavior is performed.
  • The next exciting step that Jenna is almost ready to take!
  • Examples of some of the complications that can occur during the birthing process.
  • Dogs that I would typically recommend for a retired person (although I would need more information on the particular person to make a more educated decision).
  • The average length of time we wait between breeding with the same sire.
  • Why shouting at a dog for barking is not an effective training approach and my suggestions for what you should do instead.
