Blood, Pride, And The State Of Origin Rivalry
A game can be fair. A rivalry can be fate. We go straight to the heart of State of Origin, where a broken selection system birthed a cultural reckoning and a single tackle from Arthur Beetson reset the terms of loyalty. From that first shock in 1980 to packed stadiums that hum like a storm, we trace how Queensland and New South Wales forged a contest so intense it freezes a nation three nights a year.
We unpack the shift from club-based selection to Origin eligibility and why it mattered for identity, not just results. You’ll hear the pivotal beats: the one-off matches that proved a point, the 1982 move to a full series, Wally Lewis defining a decade, and New South Wales clawing back with a clean sweep that changed the tone. Then we dive into the era that redrew the map—Queensland’s eight straight from 2006 to 2013—built on Cameron Smith’s control, Johnathan Thurston’s vision, Billy Slater’s instincts, and Greg Inglis’s power. It wasn’t only dominance; it was a blueprint for cohesion under unbearable pressure.
The modern chapters keep the tension high. The Blues break the drought in 2014, only for momentum to seesaw in years that end on knife-edge finishes and bunker calls that echo all winter. We explore why today’s Origin is as brutal as ever in smarter ways: faster line speed, tactical kicking battles, and game plans that squeeze fatigue into mistakes. Along the way, we spotlight the images that won’t fade—captains on their knees, noses pressed together in the rain, and kicks after the siren that decide more than a scoreline. If you love rugby league history, strategy, and the kind of sporting theatre that becomes folklore, you’ll feel at home here.

We're much appreciated. All your support comes through this channel with any sporting edition. This is exciting. Let's start this journey. Here we go. This more than a football game. This is a blood beer that has defined a natural. It's an animal free-pointed silvery war where workplace friendship are sub ended and their families are split down a state line. This is state of origin. So unblended. In the Australian physical, it's known as the Aspert Principle of Rugby League. That's what we are here for this episode. Well, but this level of hardest wasn't just born overnight, absolutely not overnight. It was forgiven of injurance, batteries, imperial Britannon, and passed down through the Grantinance. This is a story of reliable revenge and never end. As I mentioned at the beginning. So how did a simple game become Australian Greatest Glory match? Well, let's get on to a bit more info. So to understand the haters, you have to go back in time before the or well the famous decade in state rugby league was a completely joke. The rule was simple. You play for the state where you club base. But New South Wales was the riding Sydney clubs, acted like a complaint, giant, simmering, pointing Queensland greatest players. Imagine that you were watching a small town brighter than the stone getting heart-hearted by a rival company. Only to be sent back. Craft their home home, like their original home or old home. After years and years, the Queenslanders wore their own heroes in that sky blue jersey of New South Wales petting their own state. After after and after. The business fierce, it was a one-side fight. Wasn't one team had it hands tied by it back by the late 1970s. Instead, hard complete complaint and of all when the two state played in 1980, a heartflated crowd of just 1,300 people were thrown to show up. Something had to change. In the justice of birth of reality, and this is a selection of one. The solution champions by QIL presented Rob Matt. Finally rode a once-off exhibition match where players were respect their states of orientation. The state were the first play single football. The Sydney media laughed it off, calling it the non-event of the century. They saw gums it. Quintan saw a chance for justice. On the July 8th, 1980, the state was set at Brisbane's long part. The moment that changed everything happened before the game even kicked off. Queensland was led out by Arthur Beaston, living legend, who been supposed to play 18 games against his home state. Now at 35 years old and pulled from reserve guard grade. He was finally home where in the Molly and GSE. Early in the match, B Tun led his own hard tension club teammates, McCollin was a bone rating tackle. That message was a date of war written. I've been bruising tonight. The club loyalty means nothing. This was a birth of menton day against a mate against mate. In fire a Queensland fire side played with Hashon missing for decades. They were 2010 and upset they sent Scott or Stockwaves through the Australian sport. A 20-year-old twist close was na man of the match. A close man was man of the match. But very high bloody to every Queenslander who felt cheaper by the old system. Hello, alright, there we go. Let's continue on with this amazing what I have. Totally researched. This amazing history. So the explained was a red sointing successful after another one off match in 1981. The full free game state of origin series was the official born of 1982. The garden finally had its commotion. We are now up to select two the decade of dominance and destriction. The nineteen eighties began with a Queensland storm led by the men they called the king. Wiley Lewis the Monson was documented. Lewis wasn't just a player, he was the monster. Popularity of Queensland team that moved to this living. He captained the Moisons in 30 of his 31 games, winning a record eight men of the match a war, which is incredible. Queensland won the first two full series in 1982 and 1983, building a Dynaston formation on per Passion and Lewis Monthein comment of the game. But the tide turned in 1985 when New South Wales finally broke the through the series win. There over Rome Captain Steve Montheimer dropped to his knees and kissed the Sydney cricket ground turf in a now icon moment of she released. The blue blackered it up with the first ever free nil clean sweep in 1986, but Queensland, filled by that finale scent of injustice, came rolling back to win free straight from 1987 to 1989. The new 90s saw a golden era for the New South Wales, coached by Phil Golden and led by Garden of Legends like Larry Daly, Ricky Stewart, and Brad Fitted. The Blue assisted their own brand of domination winning their free competition series from 1992 to 1994. The Riley had to become a Branton tugwar. The 1991 image of a rain stock, Willie Lewis, snorling nose to nose with the New South Wales NSW in Fort Hood, Mark Gary, preferredly captain the roar. Emotion. This was no longer just a sport. It was deeply personal. Then came their destiny. After appealed of the blue successful in the early 2000s, Queensland unleashed a run of domination unlikely anything seen before from 2006 to 2013. Their Moors won eight straight series for the new South Wales NSW. It was like hunching a brick wall that rebuilt itself stronger than every single year. The era began the dreaming trailing late in the 2006 deck of Queensland captain Darren Lucky Losing pass. Oh it's so painful and scored the winning winning touchdown try. It was a moment of PLVS. NSW heartbroke the kick off decode of pain. This Morris team, future Cameron Smith, Jonathan Philforge, Billy Slain, and Greg in Glenn played with an almost telephone commentary. Unbeliever finding ways to snitch a victory from the jaws of the beat and shuttered blues hat. Well we come to select three with the modern gringered Nitzer Wales Bonnie shattered that year straight in 2014, unleashing a tri wave of pool with leaf south of the border. In the years since Penn has swarmed back and forth by the awake of the destinate still fuse every single contest it be those that punch every stadium. For the blues, every series is about pulling they're no longer in Queensland shadows. For the Moons, it's about the beading of a legend. The model games are no less brudent than the writers has simply innovated. The open bruise of the eighties have been replaced by cold war forfeit in Velocity, Warford and Surgery. Bone jeweling hits. The pressure is heavily than ever. Every series adds a new body chapter and new heroes and the villain Ah forget over night. The 2024 series, just recent, was a perfect example. After dropping the opening game, the New South Wales stormed back to win that net two, claiming that they go in Brisbane to take the shattered. But Queensland, as they always do, come back with a victory. The 2025 series saw the Blues with the opening in Brisbane, putting the Mons on the brick. In a classic comeback, Queensland caught the Nets two away games to claim the decade and the series proving once again that you can never ever write them off. Tom Dad Dealand, a standout for Queensland captain the state, relies in spirit and was named player of the series. Across officials, Queensland has won 25 to New South Wales 17, which is two-drawn series, but those numbers don't tell the full story. They don't capitalise the feeling of the state holding its breath as a kick sails towards the post after the siren. They don't expect the war of 80,000 people that feels like a fatal force and the century don't explain why for three nights a year. Everything else in Australia simply stops. Well we do come to the end, ladies and gentlemen. I hope you enjoy it. From the brown up foundliness of the old system to the birth of legend in Arthur B Stone from the regular old King Wheelie to question the weight of the eight year destinations every chapter has poured on history and meaning onto the nets. It's a show of heart lead rolling down the hill forever, 40 years, getting bigger and more unstoppable with every season. Satan Origin is more than a game because it's born from glory, fight, for respect. It's a family hair loot of animation passing down the throne and warm into Australian very NDA. It's the grained map that will never end. What's your most unforgetted state origin moment? Was it a miracle try? Is it breathing hit or heartstopping finish?
