How can you use chanting when setting your New Moon intentions?

This week we sit down with Dr. Gemma Perry. She shares her struggles with depression and how yoga and chanting played a big role in her healing process and how something as little as 10 minutes of chanting can help you improve your mood.

Her own healing journey led her to study chanting, earning her a Ph.D. in Mantra Research

Here are Dr. Perry's 3 main findings on the positive effects of chanting:

  • Chanting is associated with profound alterations in consciousness
  • Chanting with devotion and intention has an enhanced effect and are more likely to have a better flow state and increased mindfulness as well as increased quality of life
  • Online chanting is also effective at increasing social connections as well as decreasing stress

How long do you have to chant to see benefits?

According to a study Dr. Gemma conducted,  10 mins are all it takes to see an increase in social connections and a decrease in psychological and physiological stress - and that is seen in novice chanters.

About Dr. Gemma Perry:
Dedicated to the field of mantra meditation research, and how its positive outcomes can impact society, Gemma scientifically investigates the effects of chanting mantras on emotional and cognitive processes. She completed her Honours, Masters of Research, and PhD in the psychology of chanting at Macquarie University.

Gemma is a qualified yoga teacher, who has been practicing and studying yoga psychology and philosophy for over 10 years. She has explored various meditation techniques throughout the world and believes chanting mantras is particularly suited to the modern lifestyle and can be used as a tool to heal and discover our full human potential. Gemma has dedicated much of her study, both formally and informally, to exploring this ancient method of heightening states of awareness and promoting health and wellbeing.
