129. Are There Too Many Podcasts Out There?

Welcome to Podcasting for solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in five minutes or less. Today's question is, are there too many podcasts out there? This question comes from aspiring podcaster Rebecca. Hey Rebecca, thank you so much for listening. I get variations of this question all the time. People ask me, is podcasting too saturated? Will I get lost in the crowd? Is it too late to start one? And the short answer is a very loud, very confident no, it is not too late. And in fact, this is still one of the best, best times to start a podcast. At the time of this recording, there are just over 4.5 million podcasts according to Podcast Index. And that might sound like a lot, and well, it is.

But to put it in perspective, there are over 113 million YouTube channels and more than 600 million blogs. So when you compare those numbers at 4.5 million, podcasting is actually the least saturated long form content platform out there by far. And it gets even better because out of those 4.5 million podcasts, only about 480,000 of them are considered active. That means that they have released one episode in the past 90 days to be considered active. So when you hear people say things like, oh, everyone has a podcast, it's so oversaturated. That's simply not true. The majority of podcasts that have ever been created are either abandoned, inactive, or they have fewer than 10 episodes total. So that means that if you can show up consistently, provide real value, and stick with it long term, you are already ahead of most people.

And if you are a business owner, especially one who's already creating content or thinking about visibility and lead generation, podcasting can be your best marketing tool.
