Welcome to Podcasting for solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in five minutes or less. Today's question is what should I say in episode one of my new podcast? This question comes from aspiring podcaster Lily. Thanks for being a listener, Lily. Lily goes on to say that she has put off starting her podcast because she is still stuck on episode one and keeps overthinking it. First, let me say that I get it, Lily. I am a chronic overthinker and it took me two years to get this podcast started because I was too in my head. But to answer your actual question, Episode one should simply be an introduction to the show, telling listeners who you are, why you're here, and what they can expect in future episodes. This is an appropriate place to tell a short version of your story, why you do what you do, how you're qualified to talk about the subject, why you're passionate about it, etc.

Don't spend 30 plus minutes on this, but do explain who you are and why they should trust you. Equally importantly, you want to let listeners know what they can expect on the show. Tell them in big picture terms what kinds of things you're going to be covering and how the episodes are going to help them, going to solve problems or move them closer to goals, and that's it. A little bit about you, a little bit about them. That's all. I will also say that episode one doesn't need to be any certain length. My students will often say to me that their episode is not long enough because it's only five minutes, and that's totally fine. Episode one is often shorter than your subsequent episodes, though.

It doesn't have to be. And finally, remember that done is better than perfect. You've got this. If you have a podcasting question, click the Send me your question link in the episode description and I'll answer it in an upcoming episode. Until next time, happy podcasting.
