Welcome to Podcasting for Solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in 5 minutes or less. Today's question is, how do people discover new podcasts? And this question comes from Sue, an aspiring podcaster. Thanks for being a listener, Sue. She goes on to say that she doesn't really enjoy being on social media and she doesn't want to spend a lot of time marketing sustain her podcast, so she's wondering if it's even worth starting one if she's not planning to promote it heavily. This is a great question, and I can so relate to this because I don't want to spend a lot of time marketing my podcast or being on social media either, and I'm here with a successful show, so I think that gives you your answer. About 50% of podcast listeners discover new shows by searching inside their podcast app, which is why I am such a big fan of podcast search engine optimization, or podcast SEO. Just like people search on Google, they also search inside their podcast apps. They open up Apple, Spotify, or another podcast player, and they type in a topic that they're looking for a podcast about.
The app then shows them podcasts, both shows and episodes that match their search. And when your podcast is optimized correctly, your show and your episodes can appear in those search results. I have not posted about this podcast on social media for a very long time, yet I still get a steady stream of new listeners. Partly because people are finding the show through search inside podcast apps. And that is because I've been strategic about optimizing for their searches. If you have the capacity, promoting your podcast can absolutely help your show to grow bigger, faster, but you can definitely have a successful show without doing that. So don't let your lack of enthusiasm for social media stop you from starting a podcast. If you have a podcasting question, click the Send Me Your Question link in the episode description and I'll answer it in an upcoming episode.
Until next time, happy podcasting.
