Welcome to Podcasting Over 50 and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in 5 minutes or less. Today's question is, how do I write titles that get more listens? This question comes from Kathy, who goes on to say that she's about 10 episodes into her podcast which is for grandparents raising grandchildren. Hey, Kathy, thanks so much for being here, and what a meaningful show. Many podcasters don't make it to episode 10, so you are doing a great job. To answer your question, creating episode titles is both an art and a science because episode titles have 2 different jobs. The first is to rank in search results, and then it's also to earn the click. So the science of creating an episode title is all about optimizing for the algorithm. Podcast apps are basically search engines, and episode titles are one of the fields that they actually consider.
So your show's primary keyword the broad, simple term your ideal listener would type into a search bar should appear in at least 80% of your episode titles. Yes, 80%. I know that sounds repetitive, and that's exactly the point, because in podcast SEO, repetition is the strategy. Now, the art of creating a title is also important though, because once your title appears in someone's search results or their it has about 2 seconds to answer their silent question of what's in this for me. As a teacher, my style is pretty straightforward, so I like to state the benefit, something like 3 Podcasting Growth Strategies to Double Your Downloads. That tells a potential listener exactly what they'll get. However, you can also spark curiosity with a title like Why Your Podcasting Downloads Drop Every Summer. You'll notice that both titles have the words podcasting and downloads in them in order to achieve the goal of coming up in the search results.
Which one earns the click can depend on the individual listener. So make sure and incorporate variety and don't make all of your titles follow the same exact structure. One last tip is that titles can be edited. So if an episode underperformed, don't retire that topic, but instead give it a new title and a second chance. You'd be surprised at how often a retitle revives an episode. If you have a podcasting question, submit it at thepodcastteacher.com/question and I'll answer it in an upcoming episode. Until next time, happy podcasting.
