Catherine Lorimer's Guide to Life
Fifty something, strong minded independent woman who lives with a black Labrador called Pippa. I have lived a full life, been married, divorced, travelled with others and alone, been to concerts and festivals alone. I have run a marathon, owned and run my own small holding and separate dog walking business, I ride horses and currently own a rare breed Fell pony called Merlin. I have taken part in dressage, show jumping, cross country and long distance rides. I have been on a South African Wildlife Safari, riding horses amongst zebras and giraffe. I have worked for a Royal College, a Castle on a small country estate, in book production and publishing, for Italian and Chinese companies.
I started my podcast to help me survive divorce, it has taken me on an incredible journey and I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone, doing activities the stories of which are available for you to listen to. I have met some incredible individuals along the way, real people who have overcome lots of different life challenges.
I have found myself having coffee with Paula Radcliff in Manchester, I have met Chris Evans, been interviewed by him on Virgin Radio, I have met the inspirational Richard Branson, sat next to the lovely Jake Quickendon at a charity event and asked him if he was on Instagram. I have worked on my self development, physical fitness and mental health, having suffered from social anxiety and had a massive lack of self confidence and I talk about this in my podcasts. By pushing myself to do all the things I talk about in my podcast, I have built up resilience. I am now mentally strong enough to date and my podcasts are currently on this topic. There are interviews with some truly inspiring real people to have a listen to, real life role models, who have overcome real life situations which you can listen to for advice and encouragement to help you through life.

Star of Your Life = new file with sound this time
The story of the music by Aaron Copland Appalachian Spring is set post second World War, he wrote it for a ballerina, the story is based on a young couple who are settling into a new farmhouse in the early 19th century.
The angel is the woman looking back on her own life. It also shows the transgression towards the end of her life, the spotlight represents the beam of light, a way up to heaven. The music has part of the Lord of the Dance, which is about Jesus and reincarnation, so the angel is pointing to the star of Bethlehem to indicate that Jesus may soon be returning.
When this music and ballet were produced it was the hope that men and women would be equal following on from the war. There is progress but, now women are encouraged to be beautiful, thin and to alter themselves in order to make themselves attractive to men. When it should be about who you are as a person as beauty fades over time. The quaker and the conductor, both men are centre stage in the painting as it is mainly men that are listened to in positions of influence. The young woman is waiting at home at a time of war listening to the quaker. She doesn’t know if her husband who is at war is alive or dead. She would not have known this in previous wars, so he is painted as a ghostly figure. She would have had to manage the house and everything else herself. She would have had to be a very strong independent woman much like myself, having lived on a smallholding.
I have added the three buglers as a Union, Confederate and American GI soldier to show previous wars and the bugles sound in the piece of music and represent war today off stage. In today’s modern world people constantly film, they don’t really listen to what is being said, much like Jesus felt he was not listened to. They just want to show the rest of the world that they were there. The person in charge of the lights who could be a man or a woman as there is more work equality now. Is too busy filming and misses the lighting cue. The spotlight is not on the main star, who is the biggest figure as you should be the star of your own life. She is an angel to represent myself as James Blunts Angel from the subway, heading towards the spotlight, as I have now revealed it’s me. I feel because I am now a middle-aged woman I am overlooked, ignored, social media means that everyone has a voice and it’s difficult to be heard. The stage manager has his head in his hands as it has gone wrong and there is nothing that he can do about it from the back of the stage. It is also an indication that in relationships things go wrong and you just have to deal with them as and when they happen. That’s real life, different to the way relationships are portrayed in the Arts, there isn’t always a happily ever after.
