Juneteenth once lived in the shadows of the national calendar — a day of profound reverence in Black communities, yet omitted from most public school lessons and state recognition. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden shifted that trajectory by signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing June 19 as the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Two years later, Nevada made it a paid state holiday.
