The Father's Business Podcast

Devotional-Receive God's Forgiveness

Elizabeth Gunter Powell and Kimberly Roddy

Freedom from guilt and self-condemnation stands at the heart of the Christian experience, yet many believers find themselves trapped in cycles of shame long after God has forgiven them. This powerful episode explores that painful disconnect between knowing we're forgiven and actually feeling forgiven.

What does it mean to truly embrace forgiveness? Through practical steps like Scripture meditation, objective self-reflection, and recognizing the accuser's voice, this episode offers a path forward. The beautiful prayer included serves as both model and medicine for the soul burdened by past mistakes. Rather than allowing Satan to harass us about our past, we learn to stand confidently in Christ's completed work.

Speaker 1:

I don't know about you, but sometimes, when I have grieved the heart of God, I have a hard time getting past that feeling of guilt and condemnation. I continue to feel that little voice inside my head say you've blown it, you've really messed up, and it's hard to move on because you've agreed with God that what you did was sin. You know that God heard your prayer asking for forgiveness and you really meant every word. You believe that Jesus died for you on the cross and that his sacrifice forgives all your sin, but you still feel the guilt and condemnation. Even if the Bible says there's now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus, you're still struggling and you know from the Bible that God has removed the sin from you as far as the East is from the West, but you still feel horrible. So how do you get past those feelings? Now, some of this is personality types. Some of us are far more critical of ourselves than others, and we struggle with judging ourselves even more so than I believe God is judging us in these situations. We make life hard by blaming ourselves for things that we did in our past. But God says, through Paul it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourself be burdened again by the yoke of slavery.

Speaker 1:

In Galatians 5.1. I believe that God understood that we were going to struggle with this from time to time, or he wouldn't have to command us to stand firm and not allow ourselves to be burdened again by the yoke of slavery. So what does that freedom really mean? It means that you are not saved from hell to be imprisoned in your own self-punishment. God has set you free. You are no longer a slave to the self-hatred and self-condemnation that you pour upon yourself. We cling to that verse in Romans 8.1. There is now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Forgiveness is not a feeling, but oftentimes our emotions have far too much power and control too much power and control. So, as Paul commanded us in Galatians 5.1, we have to choose to deny Satan, the accuser, and his plans to make us feel guilty and dirty because of sins in the past. When Satan tries to remind you of your past, we need to do these things. We need to meditate on the truth of who God is and who we are in him. Take into your heart and spirit scriptures about I love Psalm 103. It's a beautiful place to start your meditation.

Speaker 1:

Then we need to take an objective view of our past to learn from our failure. What did you learn about yourself and God through that experience? Allow God to expose the wound for his healing touch and refuse the attempts of the accuser to harass you anymore, because the King of Glory stands as your defender and advocate. Pray this prayer of commitment and begin enjoying the blessings of forgiveness and freedom that are found in Christ. Heavenly Father, thank you that you have never rejected me and you never will. You have received me unconditionally.

Speaker 1:

I am accepted in Jesus. My acceptance does not depend on anything but Jesus, his love, mercy, grace, sacrifice and righteousness. There is no shame. Before you, I repent of my sin in Jesus' name. Thank you that I am completely forgiven and cleansed by the blood of Jesus. I will not allow the enemy to harass me about my past. I choose to forgive myself and receive the full freedom of your forgiveness. Thank you that my body can function in your peace, healed and whole. I choose to let Jesus cover past failures and struggles and enjoy your love, your thoughts and your ways, so that my mind is at rest. Struggles and enjoy your love, your thoughts and your ways so that my mind is at rest. What amazing grace that you remember my sins and iniquities. No more, jesus. You took them on yourself. They are nailed to your cross.

Speaker 1:

Because of the forgiveness of Jesus, I can forgive others in his name. I choose to forgive all those who have hurt me, harmed me or spoken against me. I free them in my thoughts and no longer hold their sins against them. Bless them in your mercy. I do this through your power flowing through me. Thank you that I am a brand new creation. All the old has passed away and I stand clean in your sight. I can settle this today with you. I choose to receive your healing grace by the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit within me. Thank you that your love controls me, not my emotions or what others say, or do I receive all your blessings for my life and give you all praise, honor and glory? Amen. And we declare today where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
