The Father's Business Podcast

Devotional-Joy to the World

Elizabeth Gunter Powell and Kimberly Roddy

“He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse is found.” Across these few rich minutes, we don’t pretend pain away. Instead, we trace how blessing threads through the very places that hurt, offering practical ways to receive it: breath prayers for anxious moments, naming the need and matching it to God’s character, and watching for small mercies that signal a faithful presence. Listeners will hear a simple prayer of blessing for joy, peace, strength, and love, and a reminder that divine abundance does not thin when struggles rise. If the news is heavy or your table feels lighter this Christmas, you’re not alone—and you’re not beyond reach.

The Father's Business was founded by Sylvia Gunter to encourage people to a deeper relationship with God. Thank you for listening to this devotional. This year feels like it's been filled with heavy news, both globally and closer to home. I've had numerous friends and family members who are struggling with life and death situations, and my heart feels the heaviness of the grief and the struggle. One friend said to me the other day, Christmas is not supposed to be like this. And I get it. It feels like Christmas should be full of the comfort of home filled with all the people we love. And I know many who are facing a first Christmas without someone or a last Christmas with somebody they hold dear. My friend is right. It's not supposed to be like this. As the words of joy to the world describe, we live in a world where sin and sorrow grow and thorns infest the ground. While we celebrate the coming of Jesus, we live in the fallenness of the world that He is coming to save. The good news is found in another phrase in that same song. It says, He comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found. For whatever place we find ourselves in this fallen world, God's blessings flow as far as the curse is found. For all my friends and family who are struggling, his blessings flow to every part of their lives too. This is my hope for this Christmas for every place of sin and sorrow. May our hearts be able to see the blessings of God flowing in the midst of the hard places. His blessings are flowing, bringing the fullness of himself to meet you in the midst of your every need. In Isaiah 9, 6 and 7, God proclaims who the Messiah will be. The names used to describe him cover every type of situation we find ourselves in. Are you in situations that feel too big for you? He is wonderful, able to do more than you can imagine. Unsure of what to do? He is your counselor. Do you need someone to fight for you? He is mighty. Do you need a miracle? He is a God. Is the future uncertain or the past overwhelming? He is everlasting. Are there wounded places in you that need healing? He is your loving father. Are you scared or uncertain? He is your prince of peace. And here's the best part of Isaiah 9. It promises he is those things in abundance to us that never runs out. If our struggles increase, so does his abundance. His blessings flow far as the curse is found. We're praying for you to receive the blessing of him, his joy, his peace, his strength, his love. When you feel you're in need and lack, his blessings flow far as the curse is found.
