When Prayer Runs Out Of Words

SPEAKER_01

When I don't know what to pray anymore, when I feel numb, I can come to God and simply say, Father, I don't know what to pray. I don't know what to ask. I don't know what your will looks like in this situation. I've prayed everything I know how to pray. I don't know how to hold all of this, but I agree with what the intercession of the Holy Spirit is for me.

Welcome And The Core Question

SPEAKER_01

Hey friends, I'm Kimberly. And I'm Elizabeth, and this is the Father's Business Podcast, born out of Sylvia Gunter's heart for people to know who God is and who they are in Him.

SPEAKER_00

So wherever you're listening from today, we pray that you will sense his nearness and know that you are his beloved sons and daughters. We're really glad you're here with us today.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to the Father's Business Podcast, everybody. I'm Elizabeth, and today I want to take a few minutes to sit with a question that I think many of us have lived with, even if we have not always known how to say it out loud. The question is this: what do I pray when I don't have words? Maybe you've been there, you've sat down to pray, and your mind feels blank, or your heart feels so heavy that you don't even know where to begin. Or the situation is so complicated that you can't figure out what the right thing to pray is. Maybe you're grieving. Maybe you're just exhausted. Maybe you are caring for someone you love and they have constant needs, important needs that you have to be there for. But it just feels like it doesn't stop. Maybe you are praying for a child, a marriage, a diagnosis, a prodigal, a friend, a nation, a situation that has gone on for so long that you're tired of hearing yourself ask God the same thing. Maybe you've prayed every prayer you know how to pray, and now all that's left is a sigh. And if that's you, I want to begin here. Just because you don't have words doesn't mean that you have failed. And it doesn't mean that you're doing prayer wrong. And it doesn't mean that God has turned away from you or is no longer interested in listening. Sometimes the holiest prayer you can pray is just simply, Lord, help. And sometimes even that feels like too many words.

Romans 8 Makes Space For Groaning

SPEAKER_01

One of the most comforting passages in Scripture for me is Romans 8. And I want to slow down here because I think this passage is one of those tender places in Scripture when we are suffering and we don't know how to pray. A lot of us know Romans 8.28, and we know that all things work together for the good of those that love God. And that is true, and it's beautiful, and it's powerful, and it is a great anchor of our faith. But sometimes we rush to 8.28 too quickly that we miss the verses right ahead of it. Before Paul says, all things work together for the good, he talks about suffering. He talks about creation groaning. He talks about waiting. He talks about hope for what we do not yet see. Romans 8.18 says, I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Then Paul says that creation itself waits in eager expectation. He says creation was subjected to frustration, and that creation itself will one day be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and the glory of the children of God. Verses twenty two and twenty three say we know that the whole creation has been groaning as in pains of childbirth right up to the present time, not only so, but we ourselves groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. And that is so important. Scripture does not minimize the ache. It doesn't say stop groaning because you should know better. It says all of creation is groaning. We are living in a world that is not yet as it should be. Because of the fall, there is decay, suffering, sickness, grief, injustice, confusion, death. The list goes on. There are places that ache for wholeness and fulfillment. So if you feel that deep ache, you're not crazy. You're not faithless. You are feeling the groan of a world waiting to be made new. Paul also says something really important about hope. Romans 8, 24 and 25. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not have yet, we wait for it patiently. Hope only exists when something is still lacking. So we do not hope for what we already have. So if you are feeling lack, that's where there's room for hope. So if you're still hoping for God to come through, yes, because if God had already healed it, if he had already made it new, there would be no

The Spirit Intercedes In Weakness

SPEAKER_01

need for hope. And in this exact context is where Paul then goes on to say in verse 26, in the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we should pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Do you hear how tender that is? The Spirit does not meet our groanings with a lecture. God does not come to you and say, get your act together. You should have better words by now. You should know how to pray about this. If you really trusted me, you wouldn't feel the ache. None of this is what the spirit is saying. The spirit is interceding for us with groans. He meets us in the places where we are groaning, and he groans too in our relationships with our children, in our bodies that are broken, in our stories, in our nation, in our world that feels out of control. Romans 8.27 says, He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. And there's something in that that makes me relax because it means prayer is not ultimately dependent on my ability to find the perfect words. The Father searches my heart. The Spirit intercedes according to the will of God. So when I don't know what to pray anymore, when I feel numb, I can come to God and simply say, Father, I don't know what to pray. I don't know what to ask. I don't know what your will looks like in this situation. I've prayed everything I know how to pray and probably made up some stuff. I don't know how to hold all of this, but I agree with what the intercession of the Holy Spirit is for me. I agree with what the Spirit is praying in me, through me, and according to your will. And sometimes that may be the most surrendered prayer we can pray. Not because we're being passive, not because we're giving up, not because we don't care or we're gonna stop asking, but because we're finally resting in the truth that God knows more than we do. The Spirit is praying better than I can right now. The Father is not confused by my silence. There are moments when the best thing we can do is stop trying to manufacture words and rest in the fact that the Holy Spirit is already interceding. We can still seek, ask, knock, we can still pray scripture, we can still bless, but we could also rest. And maybe today you that feel like you don't have words just need to say, Father, I agree with the prayer of the Holy Spirit for me in my situation. I agree with your will, I agree with your heart. I don't have words, but I'm here. And you know what? That's not giving up. That is a deep-rooted trust.

Overwhelmed Hearts And A Higher Rock

SPEAKER_01

There's another verse I love, Psalm 61.2. It says, When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I am. That is a prayer for when you do not know what else to pray. And I love that it says clearly in scripture, when my heart is overwhelmed. Okay, God expected for our human frailty to get overwhelmed. It's okay. And then allow him to lead. I don't have to figure it out, just lead me. Not when I get it all together, not when I understand the whole picture. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I am. And there are moments when that is the only prayer I've got is God lead me. Lead me to the rock. Lead me to what is higher than what I'm feeling right now, the fear, the anxiousness, the depression, whatever the emotion might be, lead me to what is steadier than my emotions are right now. Lead me to what is stronger than my exhaustion. Lead me to yourself. And that may be the whole prayer for the day. And it's enough. I also think of Psalm 139, 4. Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you know it completely. Before the words ever make it from your mouth, God knows. Before you can untangle what is fear, what is grief, what is faith, what is weariness, and what is hope, God knows. And that means prayer is not about informing God. We've talked about this. We are not the news anchor down here informing God what's going on. Prayer is a relationship. Prayer is bringing our real selves into the presence of the Father who already knows us completely and loves us right where we are. Matthew 6.8 says that similar thing. Jesus said it, for your father knows what you need before you ask him. Now, we're not going to get into the then why do we ask? That's another podcast. Your father knows. And yet Jesus still taught us how to pray. But what I want you to hear today is the pressure is off. You are not responsible for saying it perfectly so God can finally understand it. Your father knows what you need before you ask him. And that is tenderness and safety and rest.

Simple Prayers You Can Use

SPEAKER_01

So what do we pray when we don't have the words? I'll give you a few simple prayers that you can pray based on what we've talked about today. Honestly, the first one is just Lord help. That may be the oldest prayer in the world. I don't know. It doesn't sound impressive. It's not polished, it's not snappy. I'm not going to put it on a bumper sticker, but it's honest. It is recognizing that he is Lord and that you need his help. It is a prayer of surrender. So it's either Lord help me, Lord help them, Lord help us in our marriage, Lord help this situation, Lord, whatever it is, Lord help. Another prayer that I would say would be, Jesus have mercy. Jesus have mercy. This prayer is based in Mark 10, the blind man who cried out, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. And people tried to quiet him. And so he cried it out even more, and Jesus stopped. And that's what I love. When that man cried out, Jesus, have mercy, Jesus stopped. A cry for mercy got his attention. Not because he is reluctant, but because mercy is who he is. So when you don't know what to pray, you can pray, Jesus, have mercy. Jesus, have mercy over this diagnosis I just got. Jesus, have mercy over my family that feels like it's broken in a thousand pieces. Jesus, have mercy over the fear that I'm carrying. Jesus, have mercy over this nation. Jesus, have mercy over the grief I'm living through. Jesus, have mercy on me. Simply cry out for mercy and allow him to answer that how he wants to. And then use Psalm 61. Father, I am overwhelmed. Like come in the front door. Don't try to dress it up. Don't try to quote Romans 8.28 and say, Father, I know you're going to work all this for your good. No. Come to him in Psalm 61 and say, Father, I am overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I am. And just leave it there. And then remember what we talked about in Romans 8. When you don't know what to pray, remember the Spirit is praying for you. Holy Spirit, pray in me. Holy Spirit, help me to pray. Holy Spirit, align my spirit, soul, and body with you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, give me what I need in this moment. Sometimes He may give you words. Sometimes He may bring a scripture to mind. Sometimes it may just be peace. Sometimes it could be tears. And sometimes He may lead you to rest. There may be times He tells you, you just need to go take a walk, breathe. But you can trust Him. You can trust the fact that 24-7 outside of time, the Spirit is praying for you. Another great one to pray is, Father, I receive your grace for this moment. Not the next five to ten years, not even tomorrow, but I receive your grace for this moment. Sometimes we're so overwhelmed because we're trying to receive grace for the things that haven't happened yet. I am an Olympic champion of pre-grieving, pre-solving, pre-surviving. If Kimberly were here, she would tell you that I think through all the emergency plans ahead of time. So I don't need to be rushing into tomorrow. I need grace for right now. There will be grace for tomorrow when tomorrow gets here. So God, give me grace for this conversation, not the future conversations that are going to come. Give me grace for this doctor's appointment, this bill, this hard decision, this wave of grief that showed up on a random Tuesday when I wasn't expecting it. Not all the grief. Give me grace for this moment. And I would add to that, give me grace for this moment. And I agree with the intercession of the Holy Spirit going on for me right now. When you don't know what to ask, when you don't know how to pray, when you cannot tell if you're supposed to keep asking or surrender, or if your words just feel tangled up and you don't even know what God's will might be in a situation. Father, I agree with the Holy Spirit praying according to your will for me right now. That is a prayer that releases the burden of having to know everything. And I also want to say this, it can be a silent prayer.

Silence Nearness And No Performance

SPEAKER_01

Sometimes we think prayer only counts if we're talking, and we've talked about that on a previous episode. Sometimes it's just coming and sitting in silence with him. Kim's even talked about how she would let him ride in the car, maybe in the backseat, but we're not talking. That was prayer. It's like when a child climbs up into your lap because they just need to be close and safe and feel the nearness of you. Sometimes that's what prayer looks like. No explanation needed, no language, no spiritual performance, just nearness. So maybe the prayer is as simple as this Father, I'm here. Or, Father, I need to know that you are here because you feel kind of far away. And because he's kind, he'll sit with you. Perhaps he'll give you a sense of his presence. If not, he'll leave you with the truth that never will he forsake you and never will he leave you. And that's what I want you to hear today. God is not waiting for perfect words. He is welcoming your honest heart. And if prayer today is a paragraph, bring it. If it's quoting Psalm 61, I am overwhelmed, take me to a rock, do that. If prayer today is a journal full of questions that have no answers, he's okay with that too. If it's tears, if it's silence, if it's just Lord help, your Father receives all of it. He knows what you need. Jesus is your advocate. He is interceding for you. The Holy Spirit is groaning right along with you in those places that all you can do is groan. You are not carrying prayer by yourself.

Closing Prayer Blessing And Next Steps

SPEAKER_01

As we close, I just want to pray for you. Father, we come to you honestly today. We don't always know what to pray, we don't always have the words. And sometimes our hearts are overwhelmed. Sometimes our minds and bodies are just tired. Sometimes the situation feels too complicated for us to know even what to ask. But God, you know. You know what we need before we ask. You know the prayer underneath the words that we do pray. You know the ache we can't explain. You know the fear that we don't want to carry, or maybe the fear that we can't even name. You know the hope that we're afraid to say out loud. So, Father, lead us to the rock that is higher than us. Jesus, have mercy on every situation that matters to us. Holy Spirit, help us pray. Pray in us. Intercede where our words fall short. Align our spirit, souls, and body with the heart of the Father. And where we don't know what to pray, we choose to agree with the prayers being prayed by the Spirit according to your will. And we do receive grace for this moment, not for every imagined future outcome, not for every fear, but grace for this moment. Father, we receive your nearness, we receive your help, we receive your peace. And we trust that even when we don't have words, we are fully known and we are fully loved. And so now I want to bless the spirits of everyone listening to this, that you would be blessed to know that you do not have to perform for God in prayer. I bless you to rest in the kindness of the Father who knows what you need before you ask him. I bless your spirit to receive the help of the Holy Spirit when you don't know what to pray. And I bless your spirit to be quieted by the nearness and peace of Jesus. I bless you to remember that the Spirit does not lecture you. He groans and intercedes for you. I bless your spirit, soul, and body to know that the aches you are feeling is not a lack of faith. It is part of living in a world that is not yet as it should be. I bless you with hope while you wait for what you cannot see. I bless your body to release the tension of carrying everything that belongs to God. I bless your heart to bring the tears, the silence, the questions into the presence of the one who loves you. I bless your mind, emotions, soul, and body to dial down and trust that your spirit and God's spirit are agreeing in intercession according to God's will. So let's just take a minute to breathe that in. Your spirit and God's spirit are connected and having a conversation that your brain may not fully understand and you may not have words for. But deep is calling to deep, praying the will of God for you and every person and situation that concerns you today. You can be at peace even without words. Thank you for joining us for this episode today. Until next time, I am praying that you will understand that God is not waiting for perfect words. He is welcoming your honest heart, that the Spirit is praying for you in your weakness, and when you do not know what to pray, that you are still completely held, cared for, seen by a loving father who will not let you go.
