Welcome to Diabetes in the Raw podcast. I'm Jamie. I'm Hayley. And together we are Diabetes in the Raw. We both live with diabetes, but in different ways. Jamie has type 1 diabetes and has lived with it for over 25 years and is also a credentialed diabetes educator. Hayley has two boys who both have type 1 diabetes. Listen in as we share our lived experiences and our guest share theirs. Please get in touch via our socials or email if you would be interested in coming on as a guest. Our contact details will be in the show notes. Nothing in this podcast is intended as individual medical advice. Always talk to your healthcare team before making changes to your diabetes management. Hello everyone. Welcome back to the final 2023 Diabetes in the Raw episode. Just Jamie today. Hayley is away seeing some family overseas and I just wanted to jump on and say thank you for your support over the last 12 months. It has been quite the journey., we've had limited episodes with only one a month and we will build on that in the future. I just wanted to let you know some of our planned topics for 2024 and would love to hear from our audience as to what you might like to hear. So on the list is type two diabetes remission. slash reversal. We can get a dietitian on to expand on this as well, but it's a really interesting topic with, you know, more and more evidence coming out, more and more research. So that should be one that is interesting to a lot of people out there. Hopefully we're also going to do something. We're also going to do pre diabetes and I'm putting insulin resistance in there because sometimes the terms are. basically interrelated. so if you have been told you've got prediabetes or insulin resistance, this one is for you. And that one is going to focus on what you can do to reduce your risk of going on to develop type 2 diabetes. that brings us to more on gestational diabetes. Hayley and I are both very passionate about, you know, educating women, making sure they feel supported. And I guess reducing the risks of going on to develop type two diabetes there as well. So that will be a separate episode in itself. And then type one diabetes and eating disorders. Is a very specific topic, but one that is needed. And we do have a dietician who specializes in that area as well. So we will be getting her on at some point in 2024. We are going to do some more on type one and exercise specifically to the hybrid closed loop system. So the sensors, the CGMs that talk to the insulin pumps, that will be interesting to those who, you know, are struggling with hypos and exercise or probably others who want to get more active and could even share their story would be amazing. So maybe we'll try and get a guest or two on with experience in, you know, a higher level sport as well. Cause I know that's an interesting topic to a lot of type ones out there and I will share my experience in that space. And I'm sure Haley will share hers with her two young boys or not so young. One's a teenager now. The other one will be exercise and type 2 diabetes, as well as pre diabetes. So whether that's split into two episodes or maybe just one, but it's really interesting to look at how exercise can help with insulin resistance helping maintain glucose levels both in the short and long term. It's literally a medication in itself and that will probably link in with the type 2 remission slash reversal, but we will definitely do those in two different episodes. And we would love to have more people on to share their stories about their experiences with diabetes or pre diabetes. Anything in that space. So whether it's you personally, whether it's a family member, loved one, we can keep it anonymous. If you're a bit shy about coming on and, you know, sharing who you are, I completely can relate. It is quite nerve wracking. We don't have a huge audience at the moment, so I know that's probably not something we should be advertising, but it certainly helps me. Feel a bit more confident to come on. And if you're someone that, you know, would like to help just a few people out there, then we are nice and small at the moment, and we hope to expand and get more listeners. We're not here to sort of judge anyone. We're more just wanting people to feel less alone on their diabetes journey. And that was the main reason that Hayley and I you know, got together to start Diabetes in the Raw so that we could share our experiences and get others on to share theirs. And there's a pregnancy podcast out there where women share their stories and it just helps so much when. When you know you're not alone with something and one thing I'm passionate about is, you know, sharing our stories because it helps healthcare professionals with how they practice and it might change some of the language around diabetes. So, once we do get more people on willing to share. We can, you know, push it out there so that health care professionals can listen to the lived experience a little bit more. Because I know sometimes you walk out of a consult and you think, I really don't feel very good about myself. How come I can go in and I get a good result on my HbA1c, that three month average or my timing range on my sensor was the best it's ever been and somehow I still come out and feel like it was negative. So they're the sorts of things that I would love for people to share and it's not to to just have a whinge. It's more just so that we can let others know that you know, maybe we can improve on how consults are done. And I say we because I do share that patient hat as well as the health care professional. And I know I can always do things better and I'm always learning. And Hayley shares some of her experiences with me, you know, offline when we're not doing a podcast and we just know that it's not always a positive experience. So we hope to be able to build on that and we would love to get more and more guests on. As I said, we've various types of diabetes. I know we've done a lot on type one in 2023 and I guess that's because that's the biggest area in our life. But my passion is definitely diabetes and pregnancy, type two diabetes, pre diabetes. I really want to do some more work in that space. And as I go on to study, my nurse practitioner has a personal journey for the next three years. I am doing a part time with having a young family and working. I hope to be able to share, you know, some of the things I learned along the way, and I know everything's. changing in the health space, you know, what we were told to eat 10 years ago is not the same as it is now. And it can be very confusing. So mixed messaging is really hard in the diabetes space. And I, I say that probably more around type two and prediabetes. And you know, I do want to help people find accurate information. And in the back of my mind, I'm mindful that. You know, things change quite regularly in that space. So I won't go on about it. This was just a short podcast to say thank you so much to our regular supporters. We do know who you are. Join our Facebook and Instagram. We'd love to have some more engagement from our audience and we will try and be a little bit more active on there as well. And we look forward to doing some more episodes in 2024. Please do let us know what you'd like to hear about. Please hit us up if you'd like to come on, whether you want to be anonymous or not. We are thankful to our guests who have been on in 2023. You know who you are, and we do want to get you all back on at some point in 2024 as well, because your stories are really interesting. We had a newly diagnosed adult with type one. We had Mark diagnosed over 40 years with type one, Lynn over 60 years. So yes, and we will get some more healthcare professionals on as well. I've got a few colleagues and contacts and friends who specialize in different areas, including diabetes in pregnancy. So yes, we have some exciting things coming in 2024. So thanks again for sticking with us and we will put an episode up in January. Have a lovely new year, everyone. Bye. We hope you enjoyed the episode. Thanks for listening.
