Just Say Hi

One of the most powerful pieces of wisdom I got from my dad was when he told me, "Always assign people value." People yearn to be noticed and valued. I think it is instinctive. Some time ago I shared the story about a nursing student taking a chemistry quiz. The last question on the test was, "What is the name of the woman who sweeps the floors of our building?" When the tests were turned in and the students were leaving the classroom, one of them asked the professor, "Is that last question going to count toward our grade?" The professor replied, "Absolutely. Every day you will come by people who need to be noticed. They need to be noticed by you." The student never forgot the lesson she learned that day, she also learned, the woman's name was Dorothy."
