Please help me welcome my sweet friend , melanie Bauer , to the show . We met on Instagram . Isn't that fun . I know that a lot of times people give social media a bad rap , but I have found it to be a beautiful place of connection and even to the point of meeting people from around the world , and Melanie is one of them , and she lives in Australia , which is a place I would love to go visit someday . So would you be just open to telling us a little bit more about yourself before we get deep into the goodness of what we're going to share today .
Speaker 2Yeah , thanks , Kristen . Yeah , thanks for having me on the podcast . Yeah , I live in Tasmania in Australia . I live in a little coastal town in Tasmania which is in the southern part , a little island off the southern part of Australia .
Speaker 2I live here with my dog , Bruno and yeah , just really love living in a rural place and yeah , so I've been walking with God since I was a teenager , which quite a few years ago now . But yeah , it's been a bit of a wild journey really , but yeah , one that I am really thankful for . And yeah , I moved to Tasmania from Sydney , so grew up in Sydney going to a Christian school and that's where I first really encountered God . And yeah , I came to know God at a Christian camp that we had through our school one weekend when I was 16 . And , yeah , it's just been a progressive growth in my faith and in my walk and relationship with God since then .
Speaker 1So you started . Did you go to a Christian school , like starting when you were like kindergarten , age five at least . Here we start school . I don't know when you guys start school there , but typically around the age of five . Did you go to a Christian school at that time ?
Speaker 2I started going to the Christian school when I was about nine or 10 , I think . So , yeah , we start school around the same age , about five years old , so yeah , it was sort of from what we call primary school here , so yeah , and sort of had that same schooling all the way through to when I finished school , before I went off to study at university . So , yeah , really having that Christian schooling really laid a foundation for me . That you know , I think initially too , I wasn't really aware quite how important that exposure and that foundation was to God . During that time , yeah , it really really laid that foundation for me . We used to have chapel services once a week and yeah , I used to really engage with God in that way . And once I became a Christian involved in a local church , my mum would take my sister and I to go to a local youth group and yeah , that sort of became the start of my journey with God .
Speaker 1So you were 16 , so did your whole family like did they go to church ? What was that ? Like family-wise ?
Speaker 2Yeah , family-wise mum would take my sister and I to church Relatively regularly after I became a Christian but growing up I guess it was sort of more something that was part of our family history . I guess my grandma has a relationship with God and , yeah , there's always sort of been that underlying faith in my family . That has sort of shifted gears to be a bit more regular once my sister and I sort of became involved in the church some more .
Speaker 1Okay , so would you say , like your grandma , where did that line start ? Because I know for some families there's like a breaker right , there's somebody in the family that's like , alright , I'm taking a different course here . Was your grandma kind of that one , or was there kind of a long lineage going back on both sides of your family ?
Speaker 2It's really interesting . Actually , it's only been recently that , having had some conversations with my grandma , that the lineage of God and church and having faith and reading the Bible has sort of excuse me become more evident . I guess my grandma shared with me this family Bible from one of our relatives and that Bible was gifted to her back in 1898 , I believe you know that for me was quite a profound thing to receive , just to be aware of that lineage in my family .
Speaker 2Yeah it was quite profound and also just quite mind-blowing actually , because I can't really pinpoint , obviously if it started with this particular lady who was gifted to , but I believe it probably goes back further than that , certainly . I think , yeah , it's become more evident in recent conversations with my grandma that there has been a lineage in my family .
Speaker 1That's incredible , and it's so amazing to be able to , because how old is your grandma now ?
Speaker 2She's in her 80s now . So , yeah , it's just been some really great conversations that I've been having with her .
Speaker 1So , if you look back at that turning point in your life when you were 16 , what happened at that camp that you went to ? I'm just curious for those who I don't know , maybe grew up in church and just being reminded . I think it's beautiful to be reminded of those turning points in our life when we were , in essence , rescued , right .
Speaker 2Yeah , I think at that point I'd probably been going to the little they'd have like a weekly like Christian group get together at school .
Speaker 2At that point I'd probably been going along to that for a little while and got involved with the camp and I remember it being such a it was a very sort of deep but fun social weekend as well . You know lots of study at the word , but also , you know , as youth often is , you know it's a lot of fun , interactive sort of worship moments and fun games and things . And so I remember we were having a worship moment and the group was all together in worship and I remember feeling such a joy and such a just an overwhelming love from you know God and just accepting Jesus and I think , yeah , that really it was , it was a spark and a turning point for me . That , yeah , I think really it started , started everything for me in terms of my growth and just understanding who God has made me to be and who God is . So , yeah , it's sort of been a progressive journey from that point on of growing and , you know , allowing him to shape me over the years .
Speaker 1So who has God made you to be ?
Speaker 2Yeah , I know this is a deep question . Yeah , I think God has made me to be someone who , you know , really encounters his heart and I really connect with God by sitting with him and listening to him and just spending time with him . And so , for me , encountering who God was and encountering his heart and who he says that I am , that I am chosen , that I'm set apart , that he has good plans for me and , you know , I think that that has been quite life-changing . Also , you know , it's another layer of growth and deepening revelation that really , I guess I want other people to encounter that same part of God which , yeah , I really love walking alongside people and having them just share what they're going through in their life and where they can see God in their life and , yeah , and just having them also encounter the heart of God for them , yeah , I really , yeah , it really lights a spark in me and , yeah , I really , really love that .
Speaker 1It's beautiful and I know , like personally and just in my own walk , and then , you know , walking alongside other women too , like there's definitely , there's a spark , and I know that it's part of your like DNA to do certain things right and when you're doing it , there is such a just a power and it's beyond you right , because he's like filling us with that . It's like the overflow . It's not for us to keep , it has to be , it has to be like given away , right . So , like what does that look like for somebody who maybe doesn't understand what encountering the heart of God means ? Like what is that ? If you were to talk to somebody who's like I'm not really sure what that means ? Like what would that look like for you to you know , as you're walking alongside others , what does that look like for you to help them ? You know , move into that space ?
Speaker 2Yeah , I think I think it's a part of that
looks like .
Speaker 2I think you know , sharing part of my own journey and sharing what God has walked me through , you know , in how he's been there for me . So I think , in terms of how I speak to or how I share that with others , is , you know , really sharing who God is , that he really loves each one of us and he really wants to delight in each one of us , because , you know , he took the time to make us and he took this time to , you know , send Jesus , who went through a lot of suffering and death , obviously for us , and that's obviously a big cost . You know the ultimate cost and so you know the fact that Jesus would go to that cost and that to actually have a relationship with us , you know , comes from a deep place of God's love for us . And so , yeah , I think a lot of times it's sharing God's love in that way to sort of reveal who Jesus is and who God is and , yeah , just how much he really does delight in each one of us .
Speaker 1Well , would you be open ? You know you mentioned that part of that is sharing what you've walked through . Would you be open to sharing whatever is on your heart to you know , share with our listeners today about , maybe , something that you've walked through , some things that you've walked through to , you know , get you to this point ? I know you mentioned it's been a journey and it's one of the words I use as well like it's been a wild adventure . Would you be open to sharing ?
Speaker 2on that a little bit . Yeah , yeah , absolutely , absolutely . You know , the thing that you know has been , you know , placed on my heart for a little while has just been this last season . For me , which I know for a lot of people it's been full of ups and downs and for me , in particular , it's been , you know , 2023 , I think was a real refining , pruning season , of sort of getting knocked down and having to get back up again and get back up again .
Speaker 2And it's been painful at times , there's been some grief , there's been some a lot of change , and not just one particular area of my life , it's been , you know , across a number of areas really . And so , yeah , just having all of that change and all of the ups and downs , you know it's been a lot to kind of process and deal with , you know , spiritually , emotionally , physically as well . And so , you know , I think , in all of that , you know , refining and pruning and some of the painful moments , you know , I think I really had a choice , I guess , in those moments , whether I would surrender and open myself and my heart up to let God ease me , let God in to those moments and really allow him to do the work that he wanted to do . Obviously , not all of the change and not all of the ups and downs were from God , but you know where those ups and downs happened , it was still an opportunity for me to to , yeah , make that choice and to let him come in and sometimes , you know that was quite deep work . You know he'd pull out some , some deep roots from something I'd been through in the past that you know I thought I'd dealt with many , many years ago . But there was just something there that was still weighing me down and so , you know , with the help of , you know , a couple of trusted , trusted people , you know , god was able to kind of cut that tie and let that weight disappear .
Speaker 2So , yeah , it's really been in those moments where I've let him in , that he's , he's really had , you know , no , there's been no shame or no condemnation , it's just been him lovingly coming in and removing those weights and those things that he doesn't want me to carry into this next season when , yeah , his love has has really just rushed in and filled those you know places where the roots have come out . And , yeah , it's in those moments that he's , you know , filled me and strengthened me and protected me . And , yeah , it's really been a beautiful place where , where I've let him in , because I think , you know , initially , when , when the ups and downs came , you know I was , you know , crying out to God saying , you know , turn the fire down . You know this is , this is too much . You know it felt like a lot , a lot going on .
Speaker 2And , you know , through having that moment of surrendering and letting me , him in and and knowing that he's , he's with me through all of the ups and downs , you know , no matter what they were , whether they were big or small or or anything , you know that he , he was alongside me in all of that and you know he has really helped to shift my perspective from turn the fire down to okay , god , I know that you are good , that you are loving , and just burn away what you need to you know , because I don't want to be carrying anything that you , that you don't want me to carry for the next season .
Speaker 2So I think , yeah , it's been a real place of trust and a lot of surrender and just being washed by his love again and allowing that to come in and knowing that he's been with me at every step and holding my hand and helping me still move forward , even if there are ups and downs , that he is good and he's faithful and he's constant through the whole thing and , I think , through it all .
Speaker 2You know , a couple of months ago , towards the end of 2023 , my pastor , he did a little series on love and God's love and it was , you know , based on , you know , a chunk out of Ephesians 3 , and you know I love to , you know , go slow .
Speaker 2When I read the word , I generally like to slow things down and you know I'll often sit in a passage for , you know , for a couple of months , you know , or however long God wants me to sit there , really . But yeah , I'll often slow things down and when I was reading this , you know , my pastor preached on it on a Sunday and I was sitting in that chunk of Ephesians 3 , which is Ephesians 3 , 14 to 21 . And yeah , I really just slowed it down and allowed the Holy Spirit just to reveal the things that he wanted to reveal . And as I was doing that , he really allowed a word to jump out at me and he's really taken me on a deep dive just from that one word in the passage which has really kind of summarised , I guess , for me the whole reason of this last season , and you know , even now , as I sort of come out of that season and step into a new one . So I might actually read the chunk of scripture , if that's
okay . I asked if you would be open to doing that .
Speaker 2Yeah , so it's Ephesians 3 , 14 to 21 , and I'm reading from the NASB translation , which may be a little bit different to what some people might normally read , but I really love this translation . So verse 14 starts for this reason , I bowed my knees before the Father , from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name , that he would grant you , according to the riches of his glory , to be strengthened with power through his spirit in the inner man , so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith and that you , being rooted and grounded in love , may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth , and to know the love of Christ , which surpasses knowledge , that you may be filled up to the fullness of God . Now , to him , who is able to do far more abundantly , beyond all that we could ask or think , according to the power that works within us , to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations , forever and ever . Amen .
Speaker 1Thank you for reading . You have just a peaceful calm way of speaking . So I just felt I think I'm curious what the word is , because I think I might have heard it but would love to hear you answer that .
Speaker 2Yeah , so the word that jumped out at me was actually the word dwell , which is verse 17 . Well , I'll read it from 16 . So it says that he would grant you , according to the riches of his glory , to be strengthened with power through his spirit in the inner man , so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith . And that word dwell really jumped off the page for me . And then I sort of did a bit of a deep dive into the word dwell and did a bit of a Google on what dwell means .
Speaker 2And dwell means to live in or at a specific place . So , like dwelling , as in a house , it also means to reside , live , abide , and it can also mean to keep attention directed to or on something . So you might dwell on a piece of scripture , you might dwell on a thought or something like that . So obviously , within the context of this little passage , it's talking about God's love and obviously focusing on just the one word dwell , maybe slightly out of context within that , but this is what God highlighted to me and I sort of looked at the wording of that particular line of scripture so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith . And obviously when you think of a dwelling or a house . That is a structure , something over your head to keep you warm , keep you safe , so that you can cook food for yourself , and all of those things .
Speaker 2But I think too , when you move into a house , you also generally bring everything that you want to put in the house everything that you need for the space , and I look at the wording of that so that Christ may dwell in your hearts , and it's Christ wanting to dwell in us .
Speaker 2And he moves in intermediate section of the room , brings everything that he needs us to have in our hearts and his focus is on us and he wants to live in our hearts and even the parts that we may not necessarily surrender or the parts that are broken and hurt . He sees all of those parts and even those parts . He wants us to open the door to that room and let him in and we get to have him dwell in our hearts . And that for me , knowing that his focus and his attention is on me and that he wants to live in me it's not that he has an obligation to , he lovingly wants to live in us and that little shift in perspective really changed my posture and my heart posture and the other word that stood out , that sort of related to dwell is abide , and there's a couple of scriptures in John that talks about us being , or Jesus being , the vine and where the branches and that if we remain in him , he will remain in us .
Speaker 2And you think about a vine and a branch and that particular chunk of scripture talks about being pruned to be more fruitful and how he does that , out of love .
Speaker 2Whilst that might be painful for the branch to be cut or to have things pruned away , it's actually for a greater purpose and that's to produce more fruit , which is what the vine was designed to do . It was designed to produce fruit in the right season in the right condition . So , yeah , I think about that a lot and that all we have to do is actually just remain connected and just allow him to love on us , to dwell in every area of our heart . And I then went on a bit of a deep dive just further in scripture , where it talks about dwelling and God just really , I guess , expanded on that . You look at Psalm 91 , where it says that we dwell in the shelter of the most high , and that speaks of a dwelling under God's protection . And you look at Psalm 27 , that we would dwell in the house of the Lord , and then also in other passages in John talks about the Holy Spirit dwelling in us .
Speaker 2And so what I sort of , what God has sort of pieced together and woven together for me as I've sort of came to a point at the end of last year where I reflected back over the year , you know he threw all of the ups and downs and all of this refining and pruning and what felt painful and I didn't at times understand it . It was purely a case of surrendering and allowing him to be that safe place for me , allowing him to be that dwelling place and where I could go and sit under his wings of protection , where I could be renewed and have my strength renewed . And that was my part of the dwelling , but also just that revelation that actually , yes , I get to do that , but actually he also gets to dwell in me . And so , yeah , that's really been what God has sort of summarized this whole last season .
Speaker 2Down to that , he has just really renewed the sense of place and safe place with him that you know when I'm there with him , you know that might look like sitting at his feet , that might look like , you know , going for a bush walk . It might look like , you know , catching up with a friend for coffee . You know there are other spiritual disciplines that I guess I've sort of worked into this season that have sort of helped me just really engage with Jesus in that space where it's just he and I . And you know that also might look like reading a passage of scripture and what I love to do is , you know , use my imagination , or what my mentor calls sanctified imagination . You know where I'll often read a chunk of scripture and I will imagine myself as part of that story and sometimes I'll be one of the main characters in the story . Other times I'll be , you know , just standing back watching it from a distance and observing things .
Speaker 2And you know it's been in those disciplines where you know I've been in the same way and you know God just really reinforces the relationship that I have with him where it's just he and I .
Speaker 2And you know it's in those moments where he really fills me up and everything else falls away , all the ups and downs and all the busyness of life and you know all of that really falls away , and that has really been .
Speaker 2You know what this season and what this dwelling revelation that God has opened my eyes to , you know , has been really all about . And you know he's often made it personal in those moments and you know he'll give me a picture or you know something like that , and you know where I get to see him . You know standing right in front of me , you know locking eyes with me and you know that's where he speaks and where he really pours out his love , which , yeah , really is a dwelling place and , yeah , it's been really interesting , particularly , you know , as I come to the end of that season and start to step into a new season which you know I don't have a great deal of clarity or direction yet from the Lord , sort of only you know step-by-step journey , I guess . But you know , as I've stepped into that new year , you know he also brought to mind Isaiah 43 , which says do not dwell on the past . See , I'm doing a new thing do you not ?
Speaker 2perceive it .
Speaker 1There's that word again .
Speaker 2Yeah , and it really , it really jumps out at me now . I see it everywhere . It is amazing . It is amazing , it is amazing . And you know where he's just brought that passage to me . And do not dwell on the past . You know , it's just a real encouragement to my heart .
Speaker 2Okay , this last season , full of ups and downs , there may have been lots of disappointments and lots of things that didn't go the way you
thought and lots of change , but God says don't dwell on it .
Speaker 2And you know that passage then goes on to say you know that he's making a way , you know , out of the wilderness and providing streams in the desert .
Speaker 2And you know he's God , is , you know , directing me out of this season and he's leading me out . And you know that comes from that love that he you know that he's poured out and who he is . And , yeah , that really just encourages my heart to know , okay , god's still in control . He always has been and he always will , and he's got every part of my life and everything that's ahead . He's got that all under control . He's already had it planned out since before I was born . And you know , that's a real moment where I can just relax and I can rest in who he's made me to be and that he's going to continue to guide me forward . And that doesn't mean that there won't be moments where I get overwhelmed or you know , where things don't make sense or anything like that , but it helps me to come back to that every single time and you know , remember , okay , god's got a plan , he's good , he loves me and he's leading me and you know that for me , yeah , really reassures me .
Speaker 1I just really want to highlight to the listeners today that Melanie , like , sat in seven verses , so you don't have to have read the entire Bible to have a massive revelation that will carry you forward .
Speaker 1I'm not sure why that was highlighted to me , but I think sometimes we overcomplicate things in our walk where we think we need to have it all together or know it all or read the whole Bible . But he can . Literally it's the living word and literally this is a the word dwell . And if you've heard Melanie speak on the depth of what she discovered through the seven verses in that passage and it's really fun I have to just share . I keep seeing 320 on license plates , so whenever I see that , I think of Ephesians 320 , and I saw one yesterday and the day before . So I just thought I'd share that little connection point .
Speaker 1But yeah , we , you know , to the , to the one who you feel if this resonates with you and maybe you've even walked through times like this where maybe you just are walking through some really , really hard times and you feel like you're just not hearing from God . I don't know if you've ever walked through times like that . What would you say to the listener about that ? Maybe that season ? How do you press in ? How do you get back into that dwelling place ?
Speaker 2Yeah , I've absolutely been in those moments and I think you know there were times , even in this last 12 months . You know where that's been the case and you know , I think for me it's getting in the word , it's praying . Okay , god , jesus , holy Spirit , open my eyes to what you want me to see in the word and show me where you are . It's sitting in that quiet place asking him to speak . He might speak . You know about the passage . He might just speak in general and I've generally found that even when I'm finding God , to hear God , if I take a moment to connect with God , he will always speak . It may look a little bit different . He might give you a download on the page , but he also might say , okay , go for a drive , go for a bush walk , go to a park , and he will reveal himself and speak to you in other areas of life .
Speaker 2I believe he can speak through anything . Like you said , you've been seeing 320 everywhere . I think it's also being open to allowing him to speak however he wants . And so , yeah , I think there are some of the ways . I also think having community and key trusted people around you who know God and who can pray with you and be there for you and I think that's also a big part of it . We are designed for community and I think particularly being rooted in a local church I think is important . You get surrounded by like-minded people and there's an element of connection and growth that that sort of environment fosters . And so , yeah , I would encourage people to ask God to connect them with people , particularly if they don't have those people in their lives at the moment , that God would somehow provide that connection for them .
Speaker 2So , yeah to get back to that dwelling place . I don't believe it's just one thing . I believe it's a little bit of a combination of all of those , but I think the main one is definitely taking time to sit in the Word and taking time to sit at His feet and surrendering the heaviness and the ups and downs and laying them at His feet and just allowing Him to carry all that weight and allowing Him to really come into every area of their life , because I think God will only come in as much as we let Him . So you think of someone coming into your house . If you've got a room where the door is shut , they're not going to go into that room unless that door is opened . So , yeah , I think don't be afraid to open that door to allow God in .
Speaker 2Like I said before , every time that I've let Him in in this last year there hasn't been any condemnation or shame .
Speaker 2It's just been Him opening His arms and just embracing me and loving on me and being there for me . In one of those moments for me , I was reading through a passage of scripture about when Jesus was on the cross and God gave me a picture of me standing there watching Jesus on the cross and this is obviously not in the passage , it's in my sanctified imagination but he comes down off the cross and walks over to where I'm standing and stands in front of me and lifts my head and he locks eyes with me and speaks to me and it's in that moment where he lifts my head that I get to remember of yeah , okay , you do love me . He tells me that I'm beautiful , and it's in those moments where we allow him to speak to us , perhaps in different ways , but he always comes in and makes it personal and I think the making space and the making room for him to come into those spaces , I think is really key .
Speaker 1So key . It's reminding me of that song from Melissa and Jonathan Helzer .
Speaker 2I'm not going to sing it .

Speaker 1I won't be singing , it's not my profession but there's a song that we make space , we make room and I think that's the name of it , but it's from Jonathan Melissa Helzer . I would recommend whomever is listening to this maybe go listen to that . I often hear songs for people prophetically . That's one of the ways that the Lord speaks to me is . Even today , I was hearing songs for a girl and it was like unlocking things . So that was really fun , and I think one of the things I was reminded of as you were talking is I don't know if you've read the book , melanie , but it's the prophetic voice of God by Lana Vazer .
Speaker 2Yes , yes I have read that .
Speaker 1That really opened up my eyes a lot to just the different ways that he does speak to us . So I would highly recommend that book to whomever is listening today . If you're like , I don't really understand that he can talk to us in different ways . Lana is a beautiful prophetic voice , also from Australia . You guys have a lot of fiery people there , including yourself , but she really just has a purity of heart , similar to you , and just releases things that , at least for me , have been just very confirming over the last seven , eight years , and I think this book would you say like four or five years ago ?
Speaker 2Yeah , I think so . Yeah , it was definitely a really great book as well for me to read . I really had a lot of insight and a lot of confirmation come out of that book for me as well . I think the other book that just came to mind while you were speaking was it's a book by Candice and Brian Simmons called the Sacred Journey , which is a book all about the passion translation of Song of Songs and reading that particular translation of Song of Songs . And reading that book as well yeah , also for me was quite profound in just understanding God's love in a new way and in a deeper way . It really opened a lot for me . So , yeah , I recommend that book as well .
Speaker 1Well , I'll add these two books and the song link in the show notes as well for anybody who's listening and is like I don't know what you said . So I'll link that in the bottom here for y'all who would like to go check out those resources . Girl , you are a deep well and I just love that well is within the word dewelle . I often see words within words as well , and I just love how he has . He's called you into the deep and we all have that invitation . So would you be open , first of all , if there's anything else in your heart for the one ? I always say on this podcast I do this for the one , for him first and foremost . But I always have a picture of one woman and I'm just wondering if you have a picture of one woman right now , if there's anything that you would just want to share over her , and then if you could just pray us out , that would be absolutely amazing .
Speaker 2Yeah , sure , I'd love to just pray pray over the woman in front of me , really , and yeah , so I'll just do that , if that's okay . Heavenly Father , I thank you that we get to come together and have this time sharing about your goodness and your faithfulness . And , lord , I just pray for the woman that might be listening , who might have had a rough season , who might have gone through ups and downs , who might be struggling to deal with disappointment or hurt , and , lord , I just pray that they would know your love that they would just have that wash over them afresh , that they would know that you are with them , that you love them , that you care for them .
Speaker 2And I pray , lord , that you would give them fresh eyes to see where you have been through this season . And I pray that you would give them just fresh revelation to really take them deeper , and that they would let you in and let you into all areas of their life that they would surrender and that they would allow you to dwell the way you want to in their heart , lord .
