00:03:54.240 --> 00:04:02.240 So the first quote I have up there is this statement from Chuck Colson: A worldview is the sum of our beliefs about the world. 00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:04.240 And that's really very helpful. 00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:09.840 It helps us to realize that, yes, the worldview is how we see our world, right? 00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:12.000 But it's a little more than that. 00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:22.800 And I think George Barna kind of hits it on the head there when he says, a worldview is the mental and spiritual filter through which people see, understand, and respond to the world. 00:04:22.959 --> 00:04:27.839 And it influences their every decision, value, and action. 00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:37.360 So you see, the worldview is not just how we perceive things, but it's also because we have a perception, how we react to them, how we respond to them. 00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:44.240 So today my question for you is what is your worldview? 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:01.680 There is this first verse, verse 29. 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:07.360 It's it's a bit of a strange sounding verse. 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:13.279 And when you hear it, for otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? 00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:16.399 If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? 00:06:16.639 --> 00:06:21.759 Baptized for the dead, not something we see in our life experience. 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:24.480 Hopefully, not something you've seen. 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:30.000 Um, so the questions come well, that's a strange-sounding verse. 00:06:30.160 --> 00:06:31.360 What does it really teach? 00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:32.879 And why did Paul put it here? 00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:39.439 Those are the questions that run through our mind as we start to look at this scripture. 00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:53.519 So what I'm gonna say to you is this is a bit of a false summit, meaning it's not when you're climbing a mountain, you can't always see where the top is. 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:57.360 You think you know it is, and as you're going up, oftentimes you say, Oh, that's it. 00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:01.199 Use all your energy, you get there and you find out, oh, that's a false summit. 00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:02.399 It's not really the top. 00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:05.040 It's because your field of vision is altered. 00:07:05.199 --> 00:07:08.800 You can't really see the top many times when you're climbing a mountain. 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:11.439 Well, same with this verse. 00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:15.360 Um, we don't want to stumble on it. 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:18.160 We want to know what it says because it is God's word. 00:07:18.720 --> 00:07:25.920 And um, how do you handle a difficult section of scripture when you come to it in your own reading if you find something? 00:07:27.120 --> 00:07:34.240 Again, today we really want to focus on what's your worldview and is it a resurrection worldview as it should be? 00:07:34.399 --> 00:07:36.319 But first we have to deal with this section. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:41.120 So here's a few tips, and you can write these in your outline if you like. 00:07:41.279 --> 00:07:45.279 How do you handle difficult verse, difficult section of scripture? 00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:52.480 Well, read it several times because oftentimes we read something, we don't really understand it, we reread it and we can understand it. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:58.000 Importantly, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you, to give you insight. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:07:59.600 What does the scripture mean? 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:02.639 He's there for you to help you. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:17.519 Thirdly, read it in the broader context, and by that I mean sometimes you read one verse and you're stuck on it because you don't see how it fits with the argument going before the paragraph or the chapter or even the book. 00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:22.319 Each of those, as we zoom out, helps us to understand what that really means. 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:32.159 And then you want to compare it with other scriptures, other parts of the Bible, because it is all one word from God. 00:08:32.399 --> 00:08:37.039 It helps us to understand things, lest we get the wrong ideas and be misled. 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.080 And lastly, if none of that works, get help. 00:08:40.639 --> 00:08:41.759 What does that mean? 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:55.519 Well, it could be going to visit Pastor Jim in his office, it could be talking to your Bible study leader, one of the elders, someone in your family, someone who respects scripture, who understands it, and is willing to look at it. 00:08:55.600 --> 00:09:00.720 Because if you came to me with this verse, I would have said, I don't know what it means, but I'll look it up. 00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:05.840 Um, and um that's what I had to do with this. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:07.759 I had to go and study it. 00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:11.759 So, what does baptized for the dead mean? 00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:16.240 Well, first let's talk about what it doesn't mean. 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:21.840 This is not a new teaching, this is not a new way to save your family members. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:26.639 You can't go baptize yourself for your family members and expect them to be saved. 00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:28.159 That's not the gospel. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:32.080 The gospel is fairly simple. 00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:43.600 Um, and Joel tells us that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, but they have to call. 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:45.840 You have to call on the name of the Lord. 00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:55.759 And then John tells us that to as many as received him, that's Jesus, to them, he gave the right to become the children of God to those who believe on his name. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:09:59.360 So there is believing required. 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:09.120 And lastly, we read in the scriptures that sadly, you know, people have one chance to die, and then after that comes the judgment. 00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:13.279 This life doesn't go on forever. 00:10:13.519 --> 00:10:14.879 You have to make a decision. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:16.080 That's the gospel. 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:18.639 You have to call on Jesus to be saved. 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:25.600 Paul would never let something go that compromised the true gospel. 00:10:25.759 --> 00:10:35.840 Remember, Paul's the one who said to the Galatians in a letter that he wrote prior to this one, he said, You foolish Galatians, who's bewitched you? 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:40.639 He didn't mince his words when the gospel was in question. 00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:43.919 So here we know the gospel is not in question. 00:10:44.080 --> 00:10:49.279 Um, this is not a new gospel, it does not mean that there is a different way of salvation. 00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:51.440 So, what does it mean? 00:10:52.399 --> 00:11:05.039 Well, um, I've I've looked at um a number of explanations, and there are many different interpretations of this verse. 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:08.639 I'm gonna at the end tell you what I think it means. 00:11:08.960 --> 00:11:16.720 But first of all, it's an example from someone's practice in the Corinthian church, Paul's talking about, that demonstrates the resurrection of the dead. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:19.679 Because they believed in the resurrection of the dead, they baptized. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:23.279 I mean, because they believed that there was a resurrection, they would baptize. 00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:28.480 The church in Corinth would have understood what Paul was talking about. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:29.600 We don't. 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:35.200 We don't always know everything about what was going on. 00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:44.720 Um, that's true if there was something going on in our church and we were talking about it, we'd understand, we'd have some context to put it in, but we really don't have the context. 00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:48.000 So we we're kind of looking in and guessing. 00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:53.440 Paul uses it as an example, but he doesn't say that he approves of this, by the way. 00:11:53.679 --> 00:11:54.799 He doesn't say that. 00:11:55.039 --> 00:11:56.799 So most likely, what is this? 00:11:57.039 --> 00:12:07.759 Well, I think the best explanation is that we need to understand in the time of Rome, people didn't live as long as we did, as long as we do. 00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:09.600 Their lifespan was shorter. 00:12:09.840 --> 00:12:19.600 So if you live to 10, because the mortality rate for infants was really high, uh, you had about a 50% chance you were going to make it to 50. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:30.320 So, in other words, unlike us today that live long and get gray hair and collect Social Security and Medicare, people didn't live as long. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:33.679 So people, it wouldn't be unusual to have somebody die. 00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:48.399 And I think that the best explanation is in honor of those people who became believers and died before they had a chance to be baptized, some of the Corinthian believers were baptized for them, right? 00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:49.679 In their honor. 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:52.480 Um, they were already believers. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:13:00.960 Anyhow, um, how does all this fit with the rest of 1 Corinthians 15? 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:06.399 And that is the question that we need to sort of expand out here a little bit. 00:13:06.559 --> 00:13:12.879 So I'm gonna go through back up into the beginning of 1 Corinthians, and you can look at these verses here. 00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:13.840 I have them on the screen. 00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:16.000 You can also look at them in your Bibles. 00:13:17.279 --> 00:13:24.639 Importantly, we need to understand what Paul is teaching before we get to this passage. 00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:43.440 And he is saying, first of all, in verses 3 through 6, the gospel, he says, I handed down to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared. 00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:47.279 That's his first thesis. 00:13:48.320 --> 00:13:51.519 In verses 12 and 13, he moves on a little bit from that. 00:13:51.679 --> 00:13:58.799 So he gives us the gospel first, and he says, Okay, now how is it that some of you are saying there's no resurrection of the dead? 00:13:59.279 --> 00:14:00.159 Because guess what? 00:14:00.320 --> 00:14:04.960 If there's no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:11.120 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless and you're still in your sins. 00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:14.159 That's a pretty profound thought. 00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:20.000 The resurrection is necessary, otherwise, we're also dead. 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:24.399 But the truth comes out in verse 20. 00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:33.679 His next thesis is the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:38.639 For since by a man death came, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:42.639 That is where Paul is coming from. 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:47.840 And then he gives these two arguments to support the resurrection. 00:14:48.080 --> 00:14:52.639 That's where this part of today's text falls in in that context. 00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:57.120 Um he says, let's read it again. 00:14:57.360 --> 00:15:00.080 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead?
