Powering up and down the inverter  "},{"startTime":73.6,"endTime":79.12,"body":"can exceed the transient switch-on limit for "},{"startTime":73.6,"endTime":79.12,"body":"type A RCDs, resulting in nuisance tripping."},{"startTime":79.12,"endTime":84.08,"body":"There’s another issue. Heat pumps use "},{"startTime":79.12,"endTime":84.08,"body":"inverter-driven motors to regulate output.  "},{"startTime":84.08,"endTime":89.04,"body":"The power electronics that control motor speed "},{"startTime":84.08,"endTime":89.04,"body":"can produce significant DC leakage current,  "},{"startTime":89.04,"endTime":96.08,"body":"which may impair the electronic circuitry inside "},{"startTime":89.04,"endTime":96.08,"body":"the RCD. This is known as the blinding effect,  "},{"startTime":96.08,"endTime":99.84,"body":"and it can result in the RCD "},{"startTime":96.08,"endTime":99.84,"body":"failing to trip during a fault."},{"startTime":99.84,"endTime":104.08,"body":"Additionally, many heat pumps include water "},{"startTime":99.84,"endTime":104.08,"body":"circulation pumps that contribute further DC  "},{"startTime":104.08,"endTime":110.88,"body":"leakage current. Some installers believe that "},{"startTime":104.08,"endTime":110.88,"body":"type A RCBOs, which combine RCD and MCB functions,  "},{"startTime":110.88,"endTime":116.48,"body":"offer sufficient protection. And while RCBOs are "},{"startTime":110.88,"endTime":116.48,"body":"a popular option for residential installations,  "},{"startTime":116.48,"endTime":123.04,"body":"there is no such thing as a single-module "},{"startTime":116.48,"endTime":123.04,"body":"RCBO with type B earth leakage protection."},{"startTime":123.04,"endTime":129.52,"body":"This presents a challenge for installers trying "},{"startTime":123.04,"endTime":129.52,"body":"to integrate heat pumps into existing systems.  "},{"startTime":130.4,"endTime":135.52,"body":"Type B devices are much more expensive than "},{"startTime":130.4,"endTime":135.52,"body":"type A, but the Heat Pump Association says  "},{"startTime":135.52,"endTime":139.84,"body":"that if there’s no clear manufacturer guidance "},{"startTime":135.52,"endTime":139.84,"body":"or uncertainty about circuit characteristics,  "},{"startTime":140.48,"endTime":145.52,"body":"a type B RCD should be used. That’s because "},{"startTime":140.48,"endTime":145.52,"body":"it offers the widest range of protection."},{"startTime":149.36,"endTime":156.8,"body":"The BEAMA booklet also warns not to confuse a "},{"startTime":149.36,"endTime":156.8,"body":"type B RCD, which trips on earth leakage, with  "},{"startTime":156.8,"endTime":163.04,"body":"a type B MCB, which trips on overcurrent. This "},{"startTime":156.8,"endTime":163.04,"body":"is especially important when specifying RCBOs."},{"startTime":163.04,"endTime":166.4,"body":"It also advises that when using "},{"startTime":163.04,"endTime":166.4,"body":"more than one RCD in the same  "},{"startTime":166.4,"endTime":170.48,"body":"circuit, the upstream RCD should be time-delayed "},{"startTime":166.4,"endTime":170.48,"body":"to prevent nuisance tripping and ensure the device  "},{"startTime":170.48,"endTime":180.64,"body":"closest to the fault trips first. And the upstream "},{"startTime":170.48,"endTime":180.64,"body":"device must be compatible with the downstream one.  "},{"startTime":180.64,"endTime":191.12,"body":"For example, you should not fit a type A upstream "},{"startTime":180.64,"endTime":191.12,"body":"of an F or B.
