Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
And I think a fun fact about people that are bilingual or know other languages is that I feel like a language goes a lot with your personality –

[ Jazzy Five With a Falcon theme fades out ]

– and like I feel like right now, like I do have a personality in Spanish and a personality in English.  And because I mainly use English for my college career and here at Fitchburg State, it's difficult for me to define these things in Spanish. [ laughs ]

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
[ laughs ]  You know, if you have a different answer in Spanish – because it's like – yeah,  you can say that.  Okay, so could you introduce yourself and tell us about your career at Fitchburg State?

[ 00min 53sec ]

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
Hi, I'm Karla Taveras Guerra [ laughs ], and I'm studying Communications Media, Graphic Design and International Studies. This is my senior year and –

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in spanish:
Hola, mi nombre es Karla Taveras Guerray; estoy estudiando Comunicación en la Media de Diseño Gráfico y Estudios Internacionales aquí en la Universidad de Fitchburg State.

Estoy en mi último año y me graduo ya en día y medio, más o menos. Entonces, eso es lo que el fuego decía hasta el momento de mi carrera aquí en Fitchburg State. [ laughs ]

[ 01min 38sec ]

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
So where do you find a sense of belonging at Fitchburg?

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
I definitely found a sense of belonging, kind of like with the people that I was hanging out with and some of the –  So I worked on campus. I had like three jobs on campus. It's not as bad as it sounds. [ laughs ] So I think I found a sense of belonging there, just being able to interact with other students, but also with the faculty and staff.  And so that kind of made me have like a purpose and sort of like feel that what I was doing was for something. Pretty much. Aside from what I was studying, of course.

[ 02min 23sec ]

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in spanish:
Creo que la razón o lo que me ayudó a sentirme más parte de la comunidad de Fitchburg es que yo trabajaba y tenía tres trabajos más o menos en oficinas, también en ciertos departamentos que trabajan con muchos estudiantes.

Entonces, eso me ayudó a sentirme más parte de la comunidad y también saber que lo que yo estaba haciendo era para algo más grande que lo que yo estaba haciendo en relación a lo que estudio.

[ 02min 54sec ]

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
So, in what ways have you grown or transformed during your time at Fitchburg?

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
I don't know yet.  I feel like it’s after I leave and I have time to decompress [ laughs ] that I'm going to see what I have learned thus far – or to, like, see it at a greater level.  Like right now, yes, I do know for a fact that I have grown in certain areas, but I wouldn't know how to put it into words – if that makes sense.

[ 04min 18sec ]

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
So what has your greatest accomplishment been here so far?

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
I feel like that – that is a good question. It's like when other people are seeing what you're doing and kind of, like, recognizing what you're doing. It's when I actually realize what I'm getting accomplished or what I'm getting done.  So I think this semester my greatest accomplishment was to sort of manage – or, I guess, be good at the things that I decided to study and that that showed.

So, for example, here at Fitchburg State, we have the Visions Honors Exhibition. And so I got selected to design the posters and the banners and all the things that entails Visions. And I think, for me, that was very important because when I first came here, I did participate in Visions, but I never thought I was going to be able to design the whole brand and the whole thing for Visions.

[ 05min 22sec ]

So for me, that was – it was an honor, but it was also a kind of like a demonstration that I did grow as a designer, and that I did grow as a student.

And then, on the other hand, on my International Studies and I got the International Studies Student Award, something like that, and I was like, “Do you guys even have an award for that?” [ laughs ]

So that was one thing. But also I got to travel or study abroad twice in my time here at Fitchburg State. So that was, that was awesome.  And I feel like that also helped me develop that side of my studies. –   [ Jazzy Five With a Falcon theme fades in ]  – So I think so far those are two, two of my biggest accomplishments.

[ 05min 22sec ]

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
Well, muchas gracias.

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
Of course. Thank you so much.

Prof. Katherine Jewell:
Anything else you want to add?

Karla Taveras Guerra (‘23) - in english:
Go, Falcons.
