Happy New Year Docs Outside the Box Nation!!

Thanks for joining me on not just any episode of Docs Outside the Box. This is my first episode recorded face-to-face with my guest. It was a great opportunity to challenge myself and take the show to a higher level.

Today’s guest is Dr. Brian Williams, the on-call Trauma Surgeon at Parkland Hospital on July 7th, 2016 – the night when a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage against police in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Williams and his surgical team are no strangers to multiple gunshot victims and quickly went into action to save as many lives as possible. Trauma surgeons train their entire careers for a night like this. This situation was quite different, not for the medical care, but for the obvious social and racial undertones.

The recent deaths of two black men killed by police officers streaming through cellphones and living rooms throughout the nation and now a black gunman shooting police officers – created both a unique and precarious situation. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Dr. Brian Williams was at the time the only African American trauma surgeon on staff. It’s a lot – breathe!

Dr. Williams’ comments four days later at a news conference further thrust him into the national spotlight when he discussed the dichotomy of treating police officers while at the same time having a fear of them as an African American male.

A little over a year from these events, Dr. Brian Williams gave a shocker when he announced on his blog that he was resigning from his position at Parkland Hospital. Without another job in play, he described it as going from “Dr. Williams to Mr. Mom.” Without any regret, he is living in his purpose and outside the box as a surgeon, speaker, and now social activist.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why he calls July 7th, 2016 the worst night of his career
  • His thoughts prior to coming to the news conference on July 11th, 2016
  • Why a year later he left his dream job
  • How he has transitioned into a public speaker and social activist
  • The story of how Dr. Williams and I met and the positive effects of mentorship
  • How he answers #imnotjustadoc
