Hey, hey, hey, welcome to the Grace Drake podcast show. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it is time to talk about the week highlights and sports. Let's go with it. Let's go talk about Detroit Pistons. We're going to talk about the Kentucky Derby and the Detroit Tigers. There's so much to talk about. I know I've been off for a couple days, but I've got a job. I got things to do, right? So let's get into it, folks. Let's get into this guy. Tarek Scuble. This is my man right here. Tarek Scubo is out for about two to three months. He is uh probably not gonna be in Detroit much longer. I see that uh Detroit starts to sink. And they're not above 500, they're not even mid-500 record during the All-Star weekend, which is in a couple months. By the time Terek Scuba comes back, it'll be sometime in July. Prospecting July, maybe August. But in this era of baseball, players don't stay on teams that they that they started with or they got drafted with or any way of sort. This is Terek Scubo's uh uh free agent year. He he can either go somewhere else or Detroit will have to trade him. The value of the trade for Detroit for this guy is nowhere near what it was last year. But then how do you uh project what he'll want to do with Detroit? But I really think with Detroit, because of his injury, that might be a pull for us to keep Derek Scuble. And I say this because he is turning 30. He is probably just hypothetically coming down from his prime. He'll he'll have uh with that elbow uh situation, which is like loose bones or loose something that's going on that they have to get out of his elbow, with that situation. I think Detroit might be able to maintain the idea to keep Terek Scuba, give him a decent contract. It may not be an eight-year contract, it may be like a five-year contract. Now, if Terek Scuba could go anywhere for a long-term contract, but if I would any GM for any of the Major League Baseball teams, you gotta figure this guy's peak is coming down. Teams like the Dodgers will probably look at them, uh the Yankees will try to keep looking at them. Any team that has a possibility of of going to the World Series this year will probably try to do a trade with Detroit. But I'll I'll be honest, folks. I'll be honest. If you're a Detroit Tiger fan and you're that guy, you might want to think about this might be in an advantage for Detroit. And I'll tell you that's why. You can get prospects up, you can get other pitchers coming up, you can look at your roster and see where things go and what things do not go. Unfortunately, uh the meltdown kind of started with Detroit uh last night against Boston Red Sox. Boston's Red Sox are in town against Detroit. Uh February Valdez uh went on the mound. And I'll tell you this: the first three runs of that game was not Valdez's fault. There was two outs. Uh McKinstree, who just came back up from the uh IL, uh, made a kind of an error, trying to keep the ball down and throw the guy out on first base. Uh and Valdell's is easy to steal bases on, which is surprising since he's a left-handed pitcher. You think he'd be able to hold on to the guy on first base. But that didn't happen. By the by the time that the score was about 10 to 3, he gave up two home runs back to back, and then he uh ended up uh uh throwing at the batter at Boston and hit him in the in the back. I think his name was Stout. Um and then the benches kind of cleared, everyone was just kind of standing there, and it was just one of those things that did you know Beldoz was not the issue. The issue was in Detroit that if you're not going to play good defense and you're gonna keep making errors, your team's gonna suffer. Detroit could have made a comeback, they scored in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. So I know I'm going back and forth a little bit, but Detroit had their chances. They really did. And it's just too many errors for Detroit Tigers. And I'll tell you, if I had a choice to think about this, I would consider maybe, I mean, maybe you do want to trade Terek Scoble, maybe you do want to get rid of him, maybe you will need to revamp up in this year and work out your your your twerks. And a good example of maybe is Jack Flaherty may not be on the team next year because he's on his second year's contract, but he's not pitching well. And I don't know how much more confidence you can give to someone if he's not improving. Um that's to me, that's what I'm kind of that's what I'm kind of drifting out to uh uh to think. Uh I do want to I do want to bring this up before I get too far into the episodes. Uh I want to talk about there's in in this sports highlight of the week, um, I want to talk about the Kentucky Derby. Uh, I want to talk about Sherry DeVox. She is uh uh the first time trainer to win a a Breed of Cup competition as a as a woman. Uh she started out as a as a Gallup girl. She she originally went to school for medication or meds. Uh she became an assistant trainer to top trainers. Uh and then when she went independent in 2018, she she then trained uh uh Golden Temple, and then they won the Kentucky Derby. It was a pretty cool race. Uh this horse was far from from the this horse was in the back. And it just kept on coming up towards the front, and by the time the uh the last the last stretch the horse took it uh uh took the win. And if you watch the replays of that race, you see uh Sherry DeVox and her child uh celebrating. I'm not gonna say that her child was celebrating. I think her child was probably like two and a half, three years old, and he was overwhelmed by by the excitement and the uh and the announcers and the uh reporters talking to her about the race. So that's pretty cool. I always try to highlight something different than basketball or football. So congratulations to Sherry DuVox as the second uh woman to ever uh uh have a horse win one of the major events. Um going back to Detroit, going back to the Detroit Pistons, uh let's be honest, folks. I think I think we if we look at the stats, if we look at the stats here, I think I'm gonna have to change this a little bit so you guys can see this. Um we go here. I know the stats are a little small for you guys to see. Maybe I should just uh uh do something a little different next time. So, Detroit Pistons basketball, they came out strong, they played more defense, they played defense at the get-go. Um, one of the more uh things that they did was that they uh had a little issues with the uh rebounding in the beginning of the game. Cleveland was a lot uh more aggressive about their own offensive rebounding in the first half of that game. But they Detroit was persistent, they took better shots. Uh it seemed like uh Kay Cunningham didn't have to do everything to keep the team glued together. I thought that um with him not having the ball in his hand all the time, it eliminated the turnover ratio on his behalf, which is always a good thing for Detroit. Uh Cleveland had a horrible time uh with the turnovers. They well, you know, I'm gonna do do this. Uh James Harden, you know, he had a lot of trouble during the game to keep the ball in his possession without giving it up. Uh, there were times where Kay Cunningham was on him pretty good. Uh Dennis Jenkins was playing really aggressively, better defense. Uh Dennis Jenkins also uh was a little faster, a little quicker. Uh maybe he was felt more comfortable. I think the matchups were a lot better for him because uh Orlando uh matchup, the guys were much larger, much uh longer. Uh with with Cleveland, you know, it's kind of funny that Dominion and Mitchell, he he's a great scorer, but you forget that he's not as big as Cade Cunningham, which is probably gonna be an advantage for Detroit. And then that in itself, with Cade posting uh Domin and Mitchell up, uh isolating him, or even having uh uh Tobias Harris basically uh post uh Mitchell up when you um change or do mismatches on the court. I I say that um if you consider the Detroit Pistons, Detroit was on the free throw line 35 times. They made the made 27 free throws. Uh the field pole, the eagle percentage was 44 for Detroit Pistons, and Cleveland did pretty well the 45%. Uh the assist ratio was the same, 23%. The points in the paint was the same, uh 44 points for each team. Each team did pretty good job of getting their own rebounds and getting their second chance shots. I think that uh if we look at if we look at the Detroit Pistons individual stats, you see that you see that uh I want to bring this up. You see that uh Tobias Harris had 20 points again. He's a phenomenal and he's doing a great job and everything else. Whether you see Duncan Robinson with 19 points. I think I'm gonna say this about Duncan Robinson, and I always give Duncan Robinson a hard time. But it seemed like uh his release point of shooting is a lot better than the Orlando series as as of right now. I think he corrected that mistake in the last game against Orlando. I I think he's more vertical and not leaning in towards the three-point and towards the basket. He's he's coming up and come and coming right straight down. Uh again, his release point is a lot better than it was in the first series against Orlando. And I think in the regular season, he was doing a lot of that as well. So that's something about Jalen uh that uh Duncan Robinson. I see that he's improving with his space, he's going to the basket, he's finishing his shots, going to the baskets. So if he can get more of those easy buckets, the three-pointers will become much better and easier for Detroit to make. Uh, obviously, I mean, you can't be that oblivious to basketball if you don't well know what you're talking about. But uh Jalen Duran only had 11 points, but he he did have 12 rebounds, so he had a double double. But here's what I like about uh Jalen Duran is that he's being more aggressive, going after rebounds. He's not worried about getting the ball in the paint and scoring points. Uh, there were a couple times towards the end of the game that Kay Cunningham and Jalen Duran found connection with each other, but that was basically off transitional uh fast break. Uh, like what I said before, with Jalen Duran, he's got to keep moving without the ball, and that transitional uh fast breaks is where he's gonna get more of his points. Now, obviously, getting defensive rebound is the key factor. But I will say that he is he's finding his way. I think the matchup is a little bit better. I know that Jarrett Allen is particularly small, smaller. Mobley for Cleveland is also particularly smaller, so I could see another matchup uh difficulty for Cleveland to actually defend Jalen Duran. But I really think that Jalen Duran will have to keep moving without the ball, do your picks, uh taking the ball. If the ball comes to you, take an isolation shot. He made a good 12-13 footer during the game. So I saw that improvement. Uh, the defense is going to give you what they want to give you. So it's played into that. So if they're going to play up against you, then you need to either figure to go around the player or give up the ball and find the three-point shooter, or like Dennis Jenkins, or Duncan Robinson, or Kay Cunningham, or simply the ball will come back to you if the ball is being moved around the circle. Um, mismatches can occur in that way itself. Uh Kay Cunningham, 23 points, uh, nine for 11 for free throws, three rebounds, seven assists. It's a good game for this is a great game for Kay Cunningham. If his points are way too high and his rebounds are way too high, it's where this is where he gives up a lot of turnovers. So the lower that he is with the points and the rebounds, and the more other players are able to score and to maintain their responsibility, the team looks a lot better on the court and on paper. Uh sir Thompson had 11 points, four for six field goals, three for four, four free throws, eight rebounds, five assists. Uh he had four uh four offensive rebounds, uh, one block, one steal. Uh again, our Sir Thompson is not going to be your typical shooting guard. Uh he's going to be more of your defensive um guard. He will always be more transitional, offense type of guy. Well, he'll get a rebound, or Jalen Duran will get a rebound, or Tabias Harris gets a rebound, and the ball will transitionally on a fast break, find a Sir Thompson for the points for the easy bucket. That's kind of what you want Sir Thompson to do. Uh, I don't know. I think one thing I like about Sir Thompson is that he will go to the basket, and maybe that's what he's going to have to do more of. Is if he's not a three-point shooter, if he doesn't feel comfortable taking a something first shot, he's going to go to the basket. He's going to have to get uh Cleveland to follow him, or he'll find an open Jalen Duran in the paint and he'll give up the ball that way. That's something that you could consider that happening. Uh and to be honest with you, as they Isaiah Stewart, Ronald Holland, and Javon Green, who made a three-point shot to the to end the half. I think it was the end of the half. So that was pretty pretty legit. But I think all those guys did what they had to do, maintain the deep, maintain the second team, keep it together to give the first team enough time for rest. Uh, Dennis Jenkins, like I said before, he had 12 points, 29 minutes, 5 for 13 for field goals, uh, two for two for free throws, and he had an essential uh seven rebounds. So that's looking great for Detroit. Uh, I think Dennis Jenkins will have to again uh keep moving without the ball. I think if he dribbles too much, he'll get himself trapped. He's a smaller guard. Uh he will he and Asur Thompson and Jalen Duran, they need to keep moving without the ball. And that's just simple, that's just as simple as the thing that you can think of. Uh Devontae Green will have to be the guy that will uh be a spot-up shooter. He's a better spot-up shooter than making himself his own shot. So that's kind of why you want to look at. Uh if you want to look at uh Cleveland stats, you know, I'm gonna tell you the truth. Uh I think the biggest number that Detroit should be proud of is that Jared Allen only had two points. We took him him out in the first half by there's by three fouls in the two fouls by the first quarter. The third foul was in the early second quarter. So we took Jared Allen out of out of the mix. Uh, if you can keep that guy out of the mix, if you can keep his uh uh uh tension span short and to be on the bench, you're looking great for that. Uh James Harden only had his 22 points. Donovan and Mitchell had 23 points for his thing. Uh Donovan Mitchell made four for ten for free uh three-pointers. Uh he had three turnovers. Uh James Harden had uh seven turnovers. So you gotta remember if you're Detroit Pistons, James Harden's gonna do all that flopping and all that extension on his arm when he's trying to get a shot up or try to get foul. But if you press him up up the key, up the high key point of the basketball court, you don't let him uh get himself started, you could be in a good spot. Uh I tell you too, uh Dennis Schrader uh had nine points, old Detroit Piston uh player from last year, did us a great service for Detroit when Trise Sacramento was traded to Cleveland. Um I'll be honest with you, I thought that he'd be scoring more points. I think that Dennis Jenkins did a pretty good job on him to keep him on the um on check. Uh, but that's something to consider about Detroit. Uh I'll tell you the truth, folks. If I was to say anything, I think this might be an easier matchup for Detroit. I don't know, I don't know if that's just a myth. I think if Detroit can keep I think if Detroit can keep Jared Allen and even Evan Mobley in check, I think they'd be fine. I think you're gonna give up your points to Mitchell, 23, 25. You might have to give up 32 points to Harden, especially. If they go back home to Cleveland, the game twos on Thursday at Detroit. So I'll keep you guys posted about that. But that is something I would just kind of consider uh for Detroit. Detroit Pistons, well, uh, I think that you know, you just gotta keep uh the ball moving. Uh have um have uh uh Jalen Duran to be more uh optimistic, uh a little bit more aggressive. I think that if you press on him a little bit too much, if Cleveland presses on him too much, I think he'll uh feel that uh tension or anxiety, I think what you would call it. If you I think he's got to be more like Ben Wallace. The best example for him to be is be more like Ben Wallace. Just go out there, play defense, be hyper uh uh active on the rebounding. Uh don't worry about your points, your points will come to you. Uh long stretches will come and go. But we'll uh Detroit can score 12 points in two minutes, easy, and off fast breaks. So if you can press on James Harden, uh make them turn over the ball, keep Jared Allen off his key points, you'd be fine. So there you go, folks. I'm gonna keep it at that. I will probably talk about live golf in the future, uh, and other things in in itself, but peace, love, and uh please follow me, subscribe, and uh and I'll keep you guys posted. I can't do everything, every game, gotta live life. So I'm out of here. Uh, you can you can find me on Spotify, YouTube, Patreon. I'm out. Take care.
