Welcome to Life with Max. My name is Max Marcou. Today we're going to talk about how you can be ready for anything. We're going to look at a portion of Scripture in the book of Acts. So in the New Testament, which I encourage everyone to study for themselves, but I'm here to help. You've got the first four books are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Those are the accounts of Jesus' life. At the end of those four books, you have the book of Acts. So the fifth book would be the book of Acts. In Acts chapter 1, verse 4, Jesus says this to his followers: Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised. As I told you before, John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Through that, I've learned a lot about myself, and that's helped me to conduct myself in a way that I'm happier with. It's also taught me a lot about the people around me and how I can love them and try to be there for them more so than what I felt like I was doing before. I feel more equipped now. And part of it is what we're going to look at right now. In Acts chapter 2, verse 1, on the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place. So they're waiting as Jesus told them to wait. Suddenly there was a sound from heaven, like a roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them, and everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit, and began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed, and they asked, How can this be? Jesus had followers. And this helped them to be ready for anything. And all around the world, when I travel, I see churches. I know every single church there's a story. Somehow they had to get the land, then they had to get all the material to build that church. They had to get the human power to build that place. And many of these churches are hundreds of years old. Um, the church I'm in currently in the basement of uh was built in the 70s, and its story is incredible. So my point is that when I look around at all these churches, uh, this was this group of people that we're looking at in the book of Acts, they started to spread out and spread the word, and here we are seeing churches all over the world. It's really amazing when when you just think about how every church got built. It was because they believed in a higher power, they believed in God, and they believed that more people would benefit from having a place, a community to gather in and build this relationship or grow, I should say, in this relationship with God and each other, because life's not meant to be lived alone. So, all right, I have a few points. Number one, be filled so you can know how to operate at your highest level. I study the Bible, I encourage everyone to study the Bible, get yourself a good study Bible, and uh begin to learn how God operated through Jesus, how God operated through his followers, and you'll start to see, hmm, this is very practical and it's very helpful to today's living. And I used to respond in an immature way, I'll say. And even when I was a young pastor, oftentimes I would just respond in an immature uh way of handling situations and challenges. And the more I grew, the more I realized, oh, it's not that I've figured it all out. I I've accepted that I will be a student for the rest of my life. I love that I continue to learn from God. But I don't want to not progress. I want to get better and better. And so the Holy Spirit is something that has helped me to understand the Bible better, understand myself better, and understand other people much, much better. God can speak in and through us and help us to navigate the challenges that we currently face. So this is very valuable, and I hope that you get something out of it. John chapter 14, verse 6. Jesus says, I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit who leads you into all truth. Now, the Holy Spirit also is also called the comforter, the encourager, and the counselor. Imagine having access not just to biblical truth, which is great, but also to a counselor, the Holy Spirit, to help you navigate and deal with life. It's really a gift that you don't have to do anything other than follow Jesus and ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit. It's not something that you have to jump to a bunch of holy hoops to, you know, one day get. Um, it's a free gift. And it and God loves you so much. You're his child, and he wants to help you. All right, number two, be filled to be aware of the needs around you. This is very practical because there have been times when I'm going throughout my day and all of a sudden I feel something in my spirit. It's not up here, it's it's just I feel it. Um I realize there's a need around me. And I don't want to sound far out there. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm I'm pretty chill, I'm pretty level-headed, but I am a big believer that the Holy Spirit is active, alive, and well in us. And when I realize that there's a need around me, then I'm able to pray and ask God for more direction, more wisdom. Am I supposed to just be there as a protector? Am I supposed to speak life into that person or ask them a question to help get them talking through their stuff? Whatever it may be. I've been driving along and all of a sudden felt like someone's in trouble. Call that person, they answer the phone crying. Oh, Max, you wouldn't believe what I'm dealing with right now. And I didn't know what they were dealing with, but the Holy Spirit knew. So it's a beautiful thing to nourish. We've talked about prayer and we will a lot on this show, uh, and how prayer is not just you speaking to God, but God speaking to you. This this is more of that beautiful. All right, ready for anything. So let's see. James chapter 2, one of my favorite books in the New Testament, verse 14 we'll start at. What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith, but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? So you see, faith by itself isn't enough unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Many of you maybe heard this. You know, faith without works is dead. Um, let's put a more positive spin on it. Now, someone may argue some people have faith and others have good deeds. Yeah, that's true. But I say, How can you show me your faith if you don't have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds. Anyone who has a relationship with God has an opportunity to be a blessing to the people there around. You may go to work and not really enjoy where you work or who you work with, but you have the opportunity to make it a better situation. Sometimes we don't know what other people are going through. It may be someone in your family or your school or your community, a neighbor that people have a lot of judgment against. And maybe for reasons that logically make a lot of sense, but what's really going on behind the scenes with that person? Now I'm gonna bring it back to marriage and close relationships. There's a book that I give to every couple uh before I officiate their wedding. So years ago, I went out to Hopkinen in Mass, and I believe there were 800 of us. There was uh pastors, priests, rabbis, I remember the cardinal was there. Anybody anybody who officiated a wedding, many different religious backgrounds were invited to sign something saying that we will only officiate weddings if we do pre-marriage counseling. Because the reality is, and the statistics are incredible, if you get premarriage counseling, in other words, you sit down with someone before you actually say I do, your chances of making it for the long run are much, much higher. And uh you can study that uh stat on your own. But I give them the five love languages written by uh Dr. Gary Chapman, who was a marriage counselor for 30 years, he heard a lot of different stories and he had a lot of repeat customers until he figured it out. And he realized that uh there's a about five love languages that people have. And if you have a love language that's different from your friend, uh your future spouse or your current spouse, um someone at work, even your children, you may not connect with them unless you realize what their love language is. So you can study that book for yourself, but I'm gonna just give you the five little languages: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, receiving gifts. Those are the five. So one of the stories in the book, if I remember it right, is um someone came into his office and said, I don't understand. You know, I go to work, I I I come home every night after work, I mow the lawn, I take out the trash, I you know, do the dishes, whatever. His thing was he felt like his the way he showed love was acts of service. And his wife appreciated all of that, but she wanted quality time because that was her love language. And the idea was I get my glass of water here, is that you know, we all have these tanks, love tanks, he calls them. And eventually you get drained, and hopefully someone's pouring into your tank, whatever that may be. And if they're not, they could be doing all the other good things, they're all good things, but if they're not doing the one thing that really fills your tank, you can become empty and you feel unloved. It can happen if you know. I have four children. I know that I have to parent them differently uh because they're different. Every kid is different, every person is different, you're different, I'm different. So the challenge is get to know your love language, what really makes you feel loved, and then get to know the love language of the people around you. It'll serve you well. But you don't have to give them the survey, even though there's one online you can take, you could do that, but you can just pray and say, God, I want to be ready for anything. Holy Spirit, help me to see what their love language is, help me to see what they what their needs are. And by doing this, you can start to serve people in ways that maybe you you didn't before. You may say, Oh Max, you know, I'm nice to these people. I I do all these things for these people at work, at home, in the community, in my neighborhood, but they don't appreciate it. And that's his point. He's saying that sometimes they that's just not what they're looking for. They're they just want to be loved in the way that really connects with them. So that's a story for another day. We'll circle around in the future about the five low languages. But side tip, that's a great, great book. Okay, number three, be filled for when you face battle. Prayer is something that I believe we can uh be uh doing on a daily basis, not because we need something every day, but we're just building relationship and we're building our hearing for God. You know, when I went to Berkeley College of Music, the hardest class I had uh was ear training. I could sight read, I could physically play, I knew a lot of music theory, but my hearing was not developed compared to every other kid in the class. And at that time, uh Berkeley College of Music had more international students than any uh college in the United States percentage-wise. And so a lot of the kids in my class uh struggled with communicating in English, but they could speak music and their ears were incredible. I was like, wow, I was so impressed by these people. Um, and I knew I had a lot of work to do, and that's what I had to do. I had to work on ear training, hearing what note is really the right note. If you're bending a note, where are you bending it to, timing, all that stuff. So be filled for when you face battle, practicing prayer. And and I don't mean like practicing like playing guitar, but I make time to play guitar every day because I want to be physically uh ready to play. Uh I pray every day because I feel like that's a good part of my healthy lifestyle. I work out, I eat well, all these things. They're just healthy to add into my life. So that when opportunity comes or there's a need, I'm ready. And I want you to be ready. Ephesians chapter 6, verse 10 through 11. Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against the strategies of the devil. We're saying, or the scriptures are saying, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power, so that you'll be ready to stand against the strategies of the devil. Because sometimes the devil sounds convincing, and we don't want to be fooled. We gotta know, we have to have good ear training, spiritual ears. Is this the Holy Spirit speaking? Or is this another voice that I gotta be careful of? Ephesians chapter 6, verse 16 and 17. Hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet and take the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. Taking the Bible as as something that you can battle against, the negativity, the devil himself, the things that come against you. You can stand on biblical truth. I know that some days I don't have the right thing to say or the right attitude, but I know what the truth is, and then I stand on that. You know, we all have our days when we're not at our best. We're overtired or frustrated by whatever happened in life or whoever let us down. But when you have biblical truth, that sword of the spirit, you know that you can battle against the enemies, and then you can be proud of yourself that you didn't fall for something or you didn't do something that you're not gonna be proud of. All right, let's just, as we close today, let's go through these few points real quick. Number one, be filled so you can know how to operate at your highest level. I am sure you want to operate at your highest level. You can benefit from a relationship with God, realizing that the Holy Spirit will be a counselor, an advocate for you, a comforter. Yeah. That's gonna help you to operate at your highest level, the Holy Spirit. Number two, be filled to be tuned into the needs around you. Start right in your closest circle. You have a roommate, a classmate, a family member, a person at work, a neighbor. What are the needs that they have? All of us can be ministers. You don't need a church and a pulpit to be a minister. Jesus equipped all of his followers to go out and be ministers. We have churches all over the world because of these people. Absolutely inspiring. Number three, be filled for when you face battle. We will face battles. It's part of life, but we don't have to be unprepared or unequipped. And I want us to be ready for anything. Thank you for listening. I'll say a short prayer and then we'll close. Father God, thank you that you didn't leave us alone. You gave us a gift, the Holy Spirit, to guide us, to comfort us, to show us what you're really wanting to help us to do, help us to to do the good things that you've called us to do. Lord, thank you, Lord, that we can access heaven through prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit. I thank you, Lord, for every person that's listening to this, watching this.
