129: Summer at Disney World: What We Loved, What We'd Change & Wait Magic vs. Standby Skipper

After a two-month break, we're kicking off the new season with a full recap of our 10-day summer Walt Disney World vacation, and there is so much to unpack. During this trip, we stayed at Disney's All-Star Music Family Suites (the newly remodeled rooms), Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney's Beach Club Resort, Disney's Yacht Club Resort, and finished our vacation in the beautiful Cascade Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge. I'll share what we loved about each resort, who I think they're best for, and whether I'd book them again.

One of the biggest topics in this episode is what it's actually like to visit Walt Disney World during the Fourth of July. We experienced the holiday crowds, fireworks, heat, and everything that comes with one of Disney's busiest weeks of the year. I'll walk you through what worked, what didn't, and exactly what I would change if we planned another Independence Day vacation. If you've ever wondered whether July is worth it, this episode will help you decide.

I'll explain what I loved, what frustrated me, where I think it shines, and how it compares to Standby Skipper. Both services are designed to help automate your Lightning Lane strategy so you're spending less time refreshing your phone and more time enjoying your vacation, but they approach the process a little differently. Wait Magic offers powerful automation and advance planning with extensive customization, while Standby Skipper has built a reputation for being extremely approachable and easy to use. I'll explain why I think each tool serves a different type of Disney guest and which one I would recommend depending on your travel style. Community feedback has generally praised Wait Magic's flexibility while many longtime Disney travelers continue to appreciate Standby Skipper's simplicity and reliability. Hello, hello. Is this mic even on? It has been two months since I've been back on the mic, and here we are getting ready to get started again. And you know what? Maybe I just created accidental seasons, and maybe this is season three, but there is so much to discuss after our 10-day trip to Walt Disney World. And may I say I am a little overwhelmed because even though we've had so much Disney this year, we still have so much more to come. So we have a cruise in November and two Disney trips in December. Both are trips with people who have either never been or people who go a couple times a year. The first one is with my entire family for my daughter's Disney dance experience with Imagination Campus. And then we will be there over New Year's with some Disney first-timers. But today we are jumping into all things July 4th, what I would do differently, how to survive summer at Walt Disney World, especially since the hottest month is to come, which is August. And dare I say it was an interesting experience with Weight Magic. And so we're gonna dive into some of the differences between Weight Magic and Standby Skipper. Weight Magic will get its own podcast, but it wouldn't feel right without touching on that just a little bit.

So where do we begin? I honestly think we begin with talking about the heat in Walt Disney World. If you've been here for the last four years that I've been doing this, every year I'm like, why do I go in summer? I'm never going again. And then every year you find me back in Walt Disney World during summer for 10 days because honestly, it's the only stretch of time where we're not missing things for the kids. And I want to be in the magic that long, but it's so hot that you need to be there for a long time. That way you can avoid the sun from melting your face. There were some days that were so hot that we were looking at each other and we're like, our face is baking. This was the first year where every child looked at me and goes, I think it's time that we all have UV umbrellas because we spent all of our time under that umbrella. And let me tell you, it actually lowers the temperature for you about 10 degrees. And we will not go to the parks without them. I have four, and you better believe I ordered another one. We still have a stroller kit, so she's under there with her awesome fan. But I do think it will eventually get to the point where you will see my crew all walking around with UV umbrellas to stay cool. But it was hot. There were some days that got up to 105. And just like it's important to check the weather for when the thunderstorms are coming, it's also important to check the weather for the heat indexes. You want to see what the actual temperature is and then what it feels like. Because there were a lot, there was no days that were actually 100, but the feels like temp was 105, 101. And I think it's really important to note those things. So on my blog and my Amazon storefront LTK, you're gonna find a list of supplies that I use during the summer. I would tell you to look on my Instagram, but until Instagram becomes searchable, which is something that I keep suggesting, wouldn't it be nice? Like under your favorite creator or whatever topic you're researching, you could search their actual stuff, knowing that they've talked about this before. And then you could see all the things that they've posted over the years. That is like my one hope for Instagram. But I have a ton of beat the heat items, but I wanted to particularly talk about some things that I do during the summer that we absolutely live by. So, first let's discuss water. So, water is free at the Disney Park. You can go up to any window and ask for a cup of water. However, if you've ever smelled Florida water or tasted it, it's really not the best. I actually think next time I want to take one of those water testers to see like how clean the water is. Obviously, I'm not gonna like share it or blast it or anything, but it may prove the point on why we use filtered water bottles. All of my kids have the metal water bottles because they stay cooler. We use the Phillips ones for the parks. They're about $27 to $30. And all four of them have one. But during the summer, because it is so hot, we actually take a backpack cooler of the small water bottles from Target. Just because I don't, if they are hot or thirsty, I don't want them to wait to get water because it is so hot outside. And every day that we took that cooler bag, it was gone. So we take that on full park days while we're there from morning till close, and they still have their refillable water, and we we we will refill it every single time that we see a water station. The other thing is the UV fans there or UV umbrellas. There are two kinds that I like, they're both listed on my Amazon storefront. One is a little bit bigger than the other. One has like the automatic open and close, which I really like that one, but again, it's a little bit bigger. And then one is the true travel compact size, which only really fits one person, or if you're holding like a baby under that umbrella. The other thing we always take are neck fans and hand fans. We cannot live without those. On the stroller, you should always have fans that are interior to the stroller for the kids. Make sure that air is blowing on them and make sure you have it vented so air is circulating, especially if it rains. You would think that rain would cool things down, but it just turns Florida into an oven 20 minutes later. And that baby in that stroller with that rain cover on is just baking in there. So you make sure that that fan is going. I did recently buy Ryobi fans because I want to test those out for people to see if they're really worth it and if they have the longevity with that battery, but you definitely need your hand fan, your neck fan. The other thing that we live by are cooling towels. Now, the cooling towels we have are four years old, and you will see me. I wash them every night because I think it's disgusting because we have them all over our body, all over everything. So I wash them at the end of the night, and we're usually in a DVC room, so we have a fridge and a freezer. So as soon as I'm done washing them, I put them back in the case and I stick them in the freezer so that they are basically ice blocks during the day. And then when we first take them out, when we're so hot, that cooling effect of it being ice is so nice. But if you don't have one and you want to get them really cool, you can also put them in an ice bucket and get them as cold as possible. Then there's this thing called wipes for your life. If you're like me and feel icky at the park when you're there all day, these wipes are so nice because they are basically showerless wipes and they feel so good when you feel so gross. So those are like my must, must, must-have things. And then, of course, there's a few other things that we take. My kids always pack their crocs in Ziploc bags. My oldest son is a little bit too big for a Ziploc bag because he wears a nine and a half and men's. So I did just order these very thin, waterproof shoe bags so that he can stick his crocs in there and put them in his backpack. Walking around in Crocs all day is probably not the best for your feet. But when it starts raining during the summer, you just don't want soggy shoes. The rain is different in the winter because in the winter, I tell you not to change your shoes because it's very cool. That humidity makes the air so, so cold. And so we don't change our shoes in the in the winter. And on top of that, the rain is not the same in the winter. So when it like thunderstorms in the summer in Florida, it's like a torrential downpour, whether it's just for like an hour. I have been to Walt Disney World in summer, every year, the last since the pandemic, and there's only been one day that has fully been canceled for us because it literally rained all day long. So rain is different in the winter than it is in the summer. And I definitely recommend bringing waterproof shoes. I'm still in my testing out phase. I have those three different sandals if you are watching along. I have Teva, Sketchers, and Reef. Right now, my number one is Teva. My number two is Skechers, and I don't have white feet, but for some reason the Skechers are very narrow, but they feel very soft. The reefs, I think the reason why I don't like them is because they have the built-in arch and I have flat feet. So I'm gonna do a video over all of those. I wanted to wear all of them for a month and then give you my feedback on those so that way you don't waste money because they are kind of expensive. Like the Tevas were $70, the Sketchers were about $40, and then I can't remember off the top of my head how much the wreaths are. So let me just test them and then you can make a decision off of the things that I say. But they're all great shoes and they all were waterproof, and that was really what I was looking for. But for me, the Tevas seem to be working out the best, but I will keep you posted. But when it comes, and then of course, the one thing that you always have to have during the summer is your poncho or your raincoat. I love it's called Sophie or Sophia Rose. It's one of those like Amazon brands, but they make the poncho that I wear that comes in the cute little bag and has, you know, the different styles. And so I love that poncho. They do have a raincoat, and so I am actually gonna test out the raincoat. My biggest thing with the raincoat is I needed to cover like my butt area because you're still gonna be sitting on rides, which is why I like the poncho because it covers you significantly. But recently my kids just hate the way the poncho hits their leg because it just hits at that awkward spot behind the knees or in the cap. And so I was like, you know what, I will try this raincoat. And then if they make a kid version, like maybe we'll try that out and see if we like that a little bit better. And with the poncho, sometimes like lifting your arms up is tricky because you know the rain goes inside. So that's why I was like, you know, let me try this raincoat and we'll see. And if this is a better option for everyone, I'll let you know. But that is your basic survival kit for summer. There's obviously a lot of things, water park things I have in there. I have a reel right now that's talking about water parks and the things you need for them. But you can find all of that on my Amazon storefront because you definitely need gear to survive in the summer at Walt Disney World. And then you'll find yourself, if you're not a frequent goer like we are, you will use the stuff at home. You'll use it at baseball games or football games, and you'll be like, oh, well, this is convenient having this. So 4th of July at Walt Disney World was top tier. We actually have been before, but never to like the park celebrations. We were just down there, but we didn't do like any of the park stuff, which now I will do, but I will do it very differently. I first would find out any of the specialty 4th of July offerings because I didn't do enough research on that because I was drowning in motherhood and in May Sumber. And we finally got out of school, and that's when I finally decided I should start planning this trip. And we left the next week, which is not a good idea. I should have taken a day, been like, what are the 4th of July things that are happening? What are the treats that the kids are gonna want? And I would have spent the three days leading up to 4th of July doing those. I would have found out if Voices of Liberty was performing the patriotic songs because I definitely would not have waited till 4th of July to go and see that because I've never seen that atrium so crowded in my life. And talking to some of my friends who actually went earlier, were covering it for content specifically. They said people were camping out there and just hanging out all day. And I was like, you know what? We could have done this on the 30th and it would have been just as magical. So I definitely would when research all of the options that are happening for 4th of July and see how many days those things are going to be happening. I would have not waited until July 4th to experience the July 4th things because then maybe I would have risked doing some other things. For instance, I am never going to wait in line for a character for two hours, even if it's a specialty character. But with having early access to the parks with early theme park entry, we easily could have been like, look, let's rope drop up cot so that we can be some of the first people online for the characters and we could get pictures with them in their patriotic costumes and like be done with that. And that's something that I would have done. But because it was going to be a normal park day for us, that was also 4th of July. I didn't do those things. And yes, you have to have extra ticketed days, but this is the year where we had the past. So we definitely could have taken advantage of that stuff and made sure that we would have seen all of that. So I would have definitely had an Epcot day where we could have done park stuff and patriotic stuff and then gone back again and had like a park day or showed up late because that is also something I noticed is Epcot did not get full until later because there were so many people coming to watch the fireworks. Now, I do prefer the fireworks at Epcot over Magic Kingdom, but you can see both of them multiple times. We were a little disappointed with Magic Kingdom's fireworks because it was a short show, it was only 13 minutes. And then, of course, my Disney brain was like, was it 13 minutes for the 13 colonies? And my husband was like, Of course you would think of something like that. But it was a very short show. And the way that people waited on July 3rd to watch that show, never, never. I would never. I made another mistake with that because usually during holidays, that is when I booked the dessert parties. Easter, Christmas, well, if it's Christmas week and we're down there, July 4th is another one where I would have booked a dessert party. And you know the crazy thing is, three weeks prior, I just checked to see if it was available and I was like, oh, it is. I was like, don't forget to book this. And I should have just booked it then, but I was working and distracted, and I should have just booked it then because it would have been worth it. That's when it's worth it, even though it's expensive for the kids who are now 10, because we would have had a designated spot. We wouldn't have had to wait for hours. And let me tell you, it was so packed. We couldn't believe people were waiting. So that's when we hit the bright idea was let's go ride Tron and then we're gonna get on Astro Orbiter, because of course no one was in line. And so we get up to Astro Orbiter thinking that this is gonna be like a typical 18-minute show, like happily ever after, 20-minute show for the 250th. And by the time we get up there and we're about to load, the show is starting to end. And we're like, wow, that's only it's only been like 10 minutes, and then it turned out to be a 13-minute show. But it was still really cool to watch it from Astro Orbiter, but it would have been cooler if we were flying because it was a 360-degree show. It didn't have tree projections, the castle was just lit up, and so flying on Astro Orbiter, watching that show would have been pretty cool, but it was only 13 minutes. Now I don't know if that's normal or typical or if it was just for the 250th, but it was short. Where at Epcot you got to see Luminous, and then you got their special fireworks display, which was only about, you know, eight minutes long after Luminous. And so maybe that's the move that Magic Kingdom should also do, or just be prepared. Because I'm telling you, if I would have waited two hours for that show, no thank you. I would have been upset because that show was not worth sitting in a spot for two hours just to watch the fireworks. So if you can squeeze it into the budget, definitely book the dessert party. I will not forget that again. And then, you know, we did get to watch it again from the Cascade Cabins on our last night, sitting in a hot tub. So that was definitely the best view. But we really got a great fireworks show watching it that way. But I would have definitely planned differently. Make sure to do the specialty 4th of July stuff before the fourth, have your park day of like your favorite things earlier. And then if you can buy that extra ticket, or if you have a pass of some sort, or you just plan to have, you know, a five-day ticket or five-day park all upper and whatever park you're gonna be at on 4th of July, you make it more of a casual park day and take in all of the, you know, ride the rides that you want to ride, take a midday break, come back and see the fireworks show, get a good spot. Because at Epcot, we did stop at 7:30 because again, we'd had a full day. And so we put our ponchos down on the ground, and of course, we found a spot where it was very close to the tape. It's not like Magic Kingdom where everyone starts crowding in because Epcot is the circle around the world showcase. They have to keep that path open. So, usually, if you find tape and if you can get on the edge of that tape, you're gonna be clear and no one's gonna be in front of you because they have to keep the path open in the circle.

So on this trip, we only went to Typhoon Lagoon once. We had a lot of lazy resort days, Disney spring days, because

we were so exhausted from the school year, we needed like that rest. And so when we first arrived, we checked into Caribbean Beach and stayed in Trinidad and enjoyed just like being at the resort. We went to Sebastian's Bistro, which was a different experience. Someone had asked a question, what first-time experiences we had had. And I forgot to list, we had a lot of new food that we've never eaten or we've tried to eat and couldn't get in. So when we stayed at Caribbean Beach, we ate Sebastian's Bistro. It was delicious. We stayed in the Trinidad section, which is the lightly refreshed Little Mermaid rooms. And when I say lightly refresh, it means like there's Sebastian on some paintings, but it is a very pretty room. Now, I wonder about the upkeep of these refurbishments because the materials are not as strong. You know, MDF board is a lot more popular, even though it's like strong, but like the cushions already looked worn and the remodel just wasn't as clean as it used to be. The maintenance isn't as up as it used to be. So I don't want people to book these rooms and be like, oh my gosh, these are new rooms, and then get disappointed when they notice like the cushion is half flat. So it the quality is just not there like it used to be, but the room is still really cute and the kids really liked it. I was surprised that there wasn't table and chairs in there. But part of me wonders this was one of the cool kids summer resorts, which is why I booked it. I couldn't get two DVC rooms uh two nights in a row. So that's why I was like, you know, we'll stay one DVC and we'll stay at Caribbean Beach. Let's see what they do for Cool Kids Summer there. Pluto is their nighttime character, so that was pretty cool. And then on top of that, we had just like little activities that were around the property. You get the little backpack that says Cool Kids Summer, and everything was fine. Like it was a great experience. So, but we all stayed in that room because we weren't going to the park, so I didn't really need to list like the six. It was comfortable enough, and it was a pretty cute room, and I'll have a room tour of that. So that day we just took it easy. Then we went over to the beach club and we thought about going to the parks, water parks that day, but the kids were like, no, let's just enjoy the resort and beach. We went to Disney Springs and did that kind of stuff. And again, another like redone room, and it was really nicely done, and the kids loved that pool. I took a nap and did some work, but that was a fun day because we knew we were gonna start going to the parks the next day. Then we checked into All-Star Movie Family Suite and Bravo to Disney. And I am very proud of them for giving a room of six at this price point for these, for everyone. Having larger spaces for families at a more affordable price is so important. So Disney is accessible. And for anyone who says Disney is like super expensive, yes, it is expensive, but everywhere else is expensive as well. So we just like target Disney for being more expensive, but then we pay $200 for a Broadway ticket, and that show lasts 90 minutes, and we don't go, oh my gosh, that was so expensive, you know? So I really did love the layout of the family suite. It worked great for our family. It actually ended up being the kids' second favorite resort that they stayed at during this trip, even over Lake Beach Club, which was interesting. I just think they liked the layout of the rooms, which was really nice. The one thing to keep in mind is three queen beds. So similar to art of animation, the primary room does not have a king bed, it is a queen bed. So if you're used to sleeping on a king like we are, it did feel a little smaller. And we were like, uh-uh, no kids in this bed. This is too small. But the kids all stayed in their in their beds together, which usually happens at Disney. And then we ended in the Cascade Cabin, which was just a dream. And like my next dream is to have that cabin during Christmas time because it would just be amazing. So we had lots of great room stays and a lot of slow days at Disney, really soaking up the magic, which is what this military pass has really allowed us to do as well. We typically get 11 days at Disney, but having the Celebrate America ticket for military families were it acts similar to a season pass, but it's not the same as one, but it gives us a lot more park days. It really allowed us to have a lazy, slower trip. And experiencing all these different types of rooms was also really nice. And now this is what you've all been waiting for. I know. You guys want to hear about weight magic? You want to hear about Standby Skipper? You want to hear if I still love it? Okay, so here's the deal. Weight Magic is a great website. It is a terrible app. The interface of all of it is horrible, if I'm being honest. The utilization of the app, the functionality of the app, fabulous. I mean, that's it. It is not user-friendly. I don't care how many ways you want to dissect it. I have a lot of people who sent me DMs and they're like, but if you do this, if you do this, if you do this, I am not worried about me. I'm not worried about me. Weight Magic works perfectly for me, but I don't have a Disney account for me. Honestly, I'm not the one that needs it. I have a Disney account for the Disney fam that's been built and for people who are going to Disney and I want to make sure that they fall in love with their experience, even if they don't fall in love with Disney itself. So when I am using an app, my brain is going, if someone who is going to Disney for one time in their whole life, is this something that I'm going to recommend? Is this something I should even talk about? Because is it user-friendly enough that they are going to be able to understand this? Or do I put this in the pot of when I talk about it, I'll say, you know, this is for the Disney fam. This is for the people who are Disney lifers and this is how it's going to work. And you'll learn how to do it because you have a baseline of knowledge. And that's what I was trying to decipher with weight magic. What basket am I putting that in? I didn't have to decide that with Standby Skipper. I knew that, okay, I could teach this to the lay person, to the person who's never been to Disney before. This could be another utilization tool for them. Weight magic, I don't feel that way. Now I can make a video, I can teach it, I will break it down as simple as possible. That modifying feature of weight magic is Chef's Kiss, but it is not great. And if they don't change that app to take off all of those ads, I will not use it. I was like, why do I have an ad every three seconds on this app? And I just am like, I know it's possible to do without it. I get ad money, ad revenue is huge. It's huge. But I'm like, charge standby skipper prices so we don't have to do the apps. Everyone's like, oh, but it's cheaper. It's cheaper at the detriment of your eyes. So I don't, I, I don't like it. Am I gonna still make a video on it? Yes. Am I gonna teach it? Yes. Is the execution of the actual app, like what it does, excellent? Yes, it really is. I can't get over the modifying feature. However, there were some times when I forgot to go turn it off because I didn't hit the option that just was like modify, like modify once. I put the option that's like keep modifying because I wanted it to be earlier and earlier. But then when it got early enough, I forget to go turn it off. So it's just little things like that. There's a lot of options. I don't like the way they do their groups. You know, standby skipper, you can pick the riders on Wait Magic. You're having to create groups every time you want, like, okay, these are the coaster people. This is my whole family. Okay, this is for the for the kitty rides or whatever. So you're having to create these groups to be able to book the rides. I don't like that feature. You should be able just to be able to point and click whoever's in your party. So it has a long way to go before it's like something that I'm gonna be like, oh yes, I love it. And again, when you're listening to me talk about this or when you're seeing me using it, I'm not worried about myself. I know how to use it. I pin the page, I do all of that stuff. It's very actually easy to use, but I don't like it because it's not user-friendly. It's not easy for me to break down and just tell you how to do it in a single reel or a post or a blog post. I'm gonna have to have several things because when you're thinking about strategy and execution, that's also what I'm thinking. Because I don't want you to have to be doing mental math and gymnastics while you're at the park, especially if you're someone who is going once every five years or once in a lifetime. It's different for us yearly mousketeers or DVC people who go all the time. We can do the mental gymnastics because we also know where everything is. When you know where everything is located in the parks, you can mentally jump easily. My six-year-old now takes us through the parks. She knows it like it's her playground, and she's six. Most people who are coming to Disney do not. And that's where I have to think about it. So, yes, the Disney fam, DVC, travel agents, all of you, weight magic is definitely for us. First time trip people, I don't know. I would stick with Standby Skipper. And you know what? At the end of the day, the one ride that was a must-do that we didn't have that was sold out, who got it? Standby skipper. So it's not that standby skipper doesn't work still, it's still elite. It's just being able to have the ability to modify is game changing. Like that is truly magnificent that they were able to figure that out. But I will dive more into weight magic. Don't worry. I will definitely teach it. I will make a video on it. And if you're one of those, you know, Disney lifers, DBC, annual pass, travel agents, you go once every five years, so you kind of understand the base of Disney. You definitely will want to give it a try. And I will tell you all the things to pin it, to do this, make sure you keep make your groups ahead of time because it'll make it easier. But they for it to be user-friendly, they got a lot of work to do. I can't tell you how good it feels to be back on the mic. And I'm ready to get back to this regularly scheduled program. I am not sure when I'll start inviting guests back on. I do have a list of guests that are going to be on the podcast. So I need to get them scheduled. So for right now, it'll just be me. And then I'm sure when August rolls around and we start getting back into routine again, you will start seeing the guests on here. But I am so happy to be back. I hope that you enjoyed this podcast and got a little something out of it. There's still a lot of time to explore Cool Kids Summer. So I definitely will be talking about that. We'll dive more into weight magic. And you know what? The holidays are coming up faster than we think. And so it is time to start preparing for that. I will not be going to a Halloween party this year, but I do have Melissa from Happy Haunts Plans Magic going to the park, and she has a tween and a teen. And so we will be collaborating on post, and she will be sharing her stuff live to my page as well as hers. So we'll be covering that. And I believe she's going to the first or the second party. So it will be very early on. You are going to see me planning outfits for Disney Cruise line for the wish for in November. And you know, the destiny is in May. So I'm sure, you know, as soon as the wish is done, I'll start planning for that. And then you are gonna see me plan Christmas with my family. And you know, I'm all about the matchy matchy outfits and PJs. We'll be going to Jollywood Nights and Mickey's very merry Christmas party this year. So two for one this year, and then you are gonna see us celebrate the new year at the most magical place on earth, which we have done before, but we actually didn't go to the park. We stayed at the resort. This time we are planning on being at Epcot. So we'll see how the kids survive. And we will have a total of what is it, seven kids and four adults. And it's gonna be a really magical trip. It's their first time to Disney, so we are gonna do all the things to make sure that they experience all the magic.
