presence, this precious, incredible account of Isaiah's encounter with the Holy One of Israel. 00:00:25.731 --> 00:00:36.869 In the year that King Uzziah died, i saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 00:00:36.869 --> 00:00:42.265 Above him stood the seraphim, each had six wings. 00:00:42.265 --> 00:00:46.914 with two he covered his face, with two he flew, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 00:00:46.914 --> 00:00:52.759 And one called to another and said Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. 00:00:52.759 --> anointing on the word and anointing on the text and your spirit to take these words and reveal to us the Holy One And how you would have us to respond to that vision. 00:02:14.127 --> 00:02:16.765 We pray for your people this morning. 00:02:16.765 --> 00:02:30.955 We ask you to oversee our hearts and help us to receive this not as the word of men, but as it is, in truth, the word of God that a day when it hit me like a ton of bricks that I had this incredible ability. 00:02:55.913 --> 00:03:00.150 Some of you are probably looking at me and rightfully saying Why is he arrogant? 00:03:00.150 --> 00:03:03.127 Let me tell you what gift I'm referring to. 00:03:03.127 --> 00:03:04.443 One day it hit me. 00:03:04.443 --> 00:03:08.852 Clearly, i'm not referring to the gift of teaching. 00:03:08.852 --> 00:03:23.953 One day it hit me clearly that I have this incredible gift of being able to see clearly and prolifically everyone else's sins and faults, while remaining totally oblivious to my own. 00:03:23.953 --> 00:03:31.403 And I know why you're laughing You have this gift also. 00:03:31.403 --> 00:03:44.289 I not only have this gift, i am incredibly good at it, and I do I'm kidding, but you're laughing because you discovered as I spoke that you have it as well. 00:03:46.199 --> 00:03:54.389 Undoubtedly there are husbands in this room right now that are thinking to themselves if only my wife would get it together, we could have a good marriage. 00:03:54.389 --> 00:04:03.633 There's probably wives sitting here thinking if my husband would ever get it together, we'd have an incredible marriage. 00:04:03.633 --> 00:04:12.313 Maybe there's some church members sitting here this morning saying If I only had a different pastor, i would be a different kind of Christian. 00:04:12.313 --> 00:04:15.407 And, by the way, on that count, you may have some truth. 00:04:15.407 --> 00:04:21.271 But all of us have this in common and will you acknowledge it this morning? 00:04:21.271 --> 00:04:31.754 All of us share this in common We have a deep aversion an aversion bordering, bordering on fanaticism to being exposed. 00:04:31.754 --> 00:04:41.872 We resist to the death having the light of God turned on us so that who we are is really revealed. 00:04:41.872 --> 00:04:45.122 I think we're like those creatures. 00:04:45.122 --> 00:04:58.327 If you've ever turned a rock over in the woods in the bright sunshine of a summer day and suddenly all of those creatures, it sends chills up my spine when I think about it. 00:04:58.327 --> 00:04:58.889 I hate that. 00:04:58.889 --> 00:05:06.031 And they all, suddenly thousands of creatures, run and scurry away because they're afraid of the light. 00:05:06.031 --> 00:05:14.290 Well, if that's you this morning, don't worry, because you're not alone, you're in good company. 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:33.954 The holiest prophet in the entire Old Testament era, the prophet Isaiah, was able with pinpoint accuracy to uncover and indict the sins of his people, judah. 00:05:33.954 --> 00:05:39.211 Some one has once said I read it years ago it's the best description of an Old Testament prophet. 00:05:39.211 --> 00:05:47.427 He said Old Testament prophets were really prosecuting attorneys And that's a good description of what they were called to do. 00:05:47.427 --> 00:06:08.091 In the first five chapters of Isaiah, isaiah denounces the sin of his people with uncanny accuracy and preciseness And in fact his prophecies are some of the clearest in the entire word of God in nailing the sin of his people, judah, and their capital, jerusalem. 00:06:08.091 --> 00:06:11.927 And it culminates in chapter five. 00:06:12.327 --> 00:06:22.793 After denouncing his people for four chapters, it comes to chapter five where the prophet uses that prophetic denunciatory word woe. 00:06:22.793 --> 00:06:27.387 And over and over through chapter five he repeats it again and again. 00:06:27.387 --> 00:06:33.206 Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field. 00:06:33.206 --> 00:06:39.033 Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may run after strong drink. 00:06:39.033 --> 00:06:43.391 Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood. 00:06:43.391 --> 00:06:51.612 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and shrewd in their own sight. 00:06:51.612 --> 00:07:08.732 These woes were prophetic denunciations that pinpointed every area of Judean society Their wealth, their entertainment life, their political life, their social structure. 00:07:08.732 --> 00:07:15.634 Isaiah prophesies one huge woe and says in all of it, you have forgotten the Lord. 00:07:15.634 --> 00:07:26.550 But after five chapters, when we come to chapter six, folks, there's another woe, one the prophet himself was not expecting. 00:07:26.550 --> 00:07:45.682 Isaiah was so focused on delivering God's denunciation against his people, judah, that he undoubtedly was not prepared for his own encounter with God that would lead him to cry out whoa is me. 00:07:45.682 --> 00:08:07.685 The same man who, with pinpoint accuracy, denounces the sin of his people and saw it clearly, now has a revelation of his own condition before God, and all he can do and utter in the presence of the Holy One of Israel is to pronounce a woe upon himself. 00:08:09.295 --> 00:08:25.666 Now, if you're with us for the first time or second time, we are in a series, right now, of messages called a God worth knowing, in which we are attempting to study together the nature and attributes of the God we have come to love in Jesus Christ. 00:08:25.666 --> 00:08:37.183 We saw last week when we began Isaiah 6, that Isaiah had three visions, or perhaps it's fair to say one vision with three components. 00:08:37.183 --> 00:08:43.605 The first one we called the upward vision, and we stayed there all of last week. 00:08:43.605 --> 00:09:10.144 In the message, isaiah was given a vision of the exalted Lord in his sovereign holiness, and Isaiah sees these fantastic creatures around the throne, seraphim, who do nothing day and night but sing that song that we recited ourselves a moment ago Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. 00:09:10.144 --> 00:09:16.241 The whole earth is full of his glory And we saw last week that these angels are singing about. 00:09:16.241 --> 00:09:18.667 More than that, god is morally pure. 00:09:19.254 --> 00:09:36.087 Holy gives the impression to the modern churchgoer that holiness has to do with purity, and I made the point last week as saying it does, but only in a secondary way Behind the word holy, even though it does have moral implications. 00:09:36.087 --> 00:09:38.820 That's not the prominent meaning of the term. 00:09:38.820 --> 00:09:43.485 The best way to describe it, we said, is separate. 00:09:43.485 --> 00:09:46.682 They almost could be saying separate, separate. 00:09:46.682 --> 00:09:48.767 Separate is the Lord of hosts. 00:09:48.767 --> 00:09:55.847 It's the idea of something other, something that is in a class of itself. 00:09:55.847 --> 00:09:58.602 It doesn't even relate to anything else. 00:09:58.602 --> 00:10:01.802 It's other, it's above, it's separate. 00:10:01.802 --> 00:10:13.783 But in this message this morning, i have this question And really we're not talking about another attribute of God, we're continuing to talk about holiness. 00:10:13.783 --> 00:10:31.027 I've entitled this message the trauma of holiness Because we really need to ask this question And I've been praying for us as a people that not only would we ask it, but we would experience it. 00:10:31.975 --> 00:10:40.927 What happens to a man, even a prophet of God, when he looks upon God in his awful holiness? 00:10:40.927 --> 00:10:43.097 How does he react? 00:10:43.097 --> 00:10:47.961 Well, that brings us to the second vision that Isaiah had. 00:10:47.961 --> 00:10:51.701 We called it the inward vision. 00:10:51.701 --> 00:10:55.741 What we see in the text is the upward vision. 00:10:55.741 --> 00:11:07.062 When the veil is torn and Isaiah sees the holy one of Israel, it leads him to a second vision, which has rightly been called the inward vision. 00:11:07.062 --> 00:11:12.679 And, in a word, the inward vision is simply this Really, make sure and get this. 00:11:12.679 --> 00:11:13.403 It's critical. 00:11:13.403 --> 00:11:23.561 When you see God as he really is, it always and immediately leads us to see ourselves as we really are. 00:11:25.215 --> 00:11:32.087 Now the prophet is seeing something beyond all the mirrors and all the sham. 00:11:32.087 --> 00:11:38.743 He now glimpses his true condition before God and folks. 00:11:38.743 --> 00:11:40.205 It ain't pretty. 00:11:40.205 --> 00:12:11.967 In fact, it so terrifies him that the prophet of woe, who nailed everybody else, now has the light turned on him, and the holiest prophet the man, by the way, in Judaism, who is considered the golden-tongued orator and the holiest prophet in the entire prophetic period he now can only pronounce that woe, not on the others he has so faithfully skewed, but he turns it now on himself. 00:12:11.967 --> 00:12:29.086 And the reason is clear Isaiah is now measuring himself with a new measurement, not the measurement of men, which we typically do, but the measurement of how he stands before the Holy One of Israel. 00:12:31.475 --> 00:12:41.342 And what is interesting is the very thing he is famous for, what we would call his strong point, his strength, his ability. 00:12:41.342 --> 00:12:53.385 And again, if you don't have the ability to do this, most of us and I don't even have the ability anymore to do it, though I could before if you could read the Hebrew, you'd find out that Isaiah was educated way beyond other prophets who spoke. 00:12:53.385 --> 00:12:57.085 Some of the prophets were rugged shepherds and people from the desert. 00:12:57.085 --> 00:13:29.961 Isaiah was educated He's college grad material and his book shows it But the very thing he is hailed for, the golden-tongued orator, the impeccable prophet who speaks the word of God Isn't it interesting that the very thing that he has considered to be the strongest is in the presence of the Holy One he now sees as weakness and he trembles before God because his lips are unclean. 00:13:30.294 --> 00:13:30.855 Do you notice? 00:13:30.855 --> 00:13:42.780 he didn't say woe is me, i misspoke last week, which is the extent that most of us go Woe is me, i said something unkind to my wife. 00:13:42.780 --> 00:13:44.806 He didn't say that. 00:13:44.806 --> 00:13:49.466 He said woe is me, i am ruined. 00:13:49.466 --> 00:13:51.921 Martin Luther translated that I love it. 00:13:51.921 --> 00:13:59.221 In the Vulgate or the German, he said I am dissolved, i'm melted, i'm lost as the ESV. 00:13:59.221 --> 00:14:01.942 Whatever you translate it, it's not pretty. 00:14:01.942 --> 00:14:05.104 And he doesn't say I'm lost because I misspoke. 00:14:05.104 --> 00:14:12.467 I am a man of unclean lips and dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. 00:14:13.534 --> 00:14:24.986 What you are glimpsing, church, is true repentance, not merely a confession of what one has done, though we are to confess those things. 00:14:24.986 --> 00:14:31.341 But you're looking at a man who has a revelation of who he really is. 00:14:31.341 --> 00:14:51.147 Someone has accurately said that repentance is not an awareness of what I've done only, but the recognition that, apart from the grace of God, i am capable of anything. 00:14:51.147 --> 00:14:58.546 Now there may be some here this morning who think this is an Old Testament phenomena. 00:14:58.546 --> 00:15:07.721 God used to scare people with his holiness in the Old Testament, but we came into the new and he's happy, happy, happy. 00:15:07.721 --> 00:15:09.688 It's all good. 00:15:09.688 --> 00:15:15.740 It's all good, but take this into consideration. 00:15:16.674 --> 00:15:18.663 Jesus is teaching by the sea of Galilee. 00:15:18.663 --> 00:15:20.701 The crowd is pressing upon him so much. 00:15:20.701 --> 00:15:23.162 He tells Peter, let me borrow one of your boats. 00:15:23.162 --> 00:15:25.903 He goes and tells Peter to push out from shore. 00:15:25.903 --> 00:15:29.144 Jesus is now sitting in Peter's boat teaching the multitudes. 00:15:29.144 --> 00:15:30.138 This is Luke 5. 00:15:30.138 --> 00:15:30.801 Don't turn there. 00:15:30.801 --> 00:15:32.198 You can check me out nets for a catch. 00:15:41.660 --> 00:15:46.841 And Peter says because he's been fishing all night Before Jesus came on the scene. 00:15:46.841 --> 00:15:52.501 What we don't know until Peter speaks is they were fishing all night and it was bad fishing. 00:15:52.501 --> 00:15:53.616 Nothing happened. 00:15:53.616 --> 00:15:59.285 And he tells the Lord Lord, we fished all night and we caught nothing. 00:15:59.285 --> 00:16:04.615 But Peter's at a point with his relationship with Jesus where he knows enough to know you better. 00:16:04.615 --> 00:16:07.102 Do what he says, because something might happen. 00:16:07.102 --> 00:16:12.245 So he says you know, lord, you ought to stick to preaching. 00:16:12.245 --> 00:16:16.904 I'll stick to fishing and trust me, we've been out all night. 00:16:16.904 --> 00:16:24.485 There's nothing happening, but nevertheless, at your word, i'll do it. 00:16:24.485 --> 00:16:33.067 And Peter and his boys pushed out, let down their nets and the rest is history. 00:16:33.067 --> 00:16:39.346 The catch was huge, so much so they had to signal to another boat to help them and share the load. 00:16:39.346 --> 00:16:41.640 That's, by the way, that's a picture of revival. 00:16:41.640 --> 00:16:45.331 When so many people are getting saved, you call the neighboring church. 00:16:45.331 --> 00:16:48.441 Instead of competing with them, they said will you take 50 people? 00:16:48.441 --> 00:16:50.956 That's revival. 00:16:54.735 --> 00:17:02.763 And you would think I don't want to be unkind here, but Peter's Jewish you would think that he would be elated about the business prospects. 00:17:02.763 --> 00:17:05.355 This is great, jesus. 00:17:05.355 --> 00:17:10.505 Will you go out with us every week and show us where to put down the nets? 00:17:10.505 --> 00:17:18.546 But the furthest thing from Peter's mind in this account is monetary profit. 00:17:18.546 --> 00:17:30.424 The next scene of Peter he is in the boat on his hands and knees, trembling, saying depart from me, lord, for I am a sinful man. 00:17:30.424 --> 00:17:37.500 The overwhelming emotion for Peter was not the profits that were to be had or what this means to his business. 00:17:37.500 --> 00:17:43.145 He was overwhelmed because he knew he was in the presence of holiness. 00:17:43.145 --> 00:17:49.066 God incarnate was in the boat and his holiness was manifested. 00:17:49.066 --> 00:17:52.905 It wasn't even about the miracle and getting excited about a miracle. 00:17:52.905 --> 00:17:57.646 He trembled because he stood in the presence of holiness. 00:17:58.055 --> 00:18:09.180 And when men and women encounter holiness, that is the only legitimate response And what we learned from Peter and Isaiah. 00:18:09.180 --> 00:18:11.565 and I could take you to Revelation. 00:18:11.565 --> 00:18:19.167 When John, who used to recline on the bosom of Jesus, falls on his face like a dead man and over and over. 00:18:19.167 --> 00:18:52.220 And what we learned from these encounters is this and you may not want to hear this, but I am duty bound to give you the truth It is that the pathway to true knowledge of God will always, inevitably lead us to face ourselves, to come to terms with our true condition as members of a fallen race, and that reality of our condition. 00:18:52.220 --> 00:19:05.148 If you are shallow there, understand that you are shallow when it comes to understanding and being transformed by the gospel. 00:19:05.148 --> 00:19:22.478 That's because the chief aim of the gospel is not to make you and I respectable, not to make you good church members who look like you're in good standing because you've checked yourself out And, by the standard of the house, i'm not doing too bad When I match up to everybody else. 00:19:22.478 --> 00:19:23.661 I'm living the Christian life. 00:19:23.661 --> 00:19:33.963 But it's when God in awful holiness is seen that the gospel does its work, because the goal of the gospel is not to clean us up so we look nice. 00:19:33.963 --> 00:19:37.179 It's to transform us at the heart level. 00:19:37.179 --> 00:19:53.044 And if we want to be transformed at the heart level, the gospel always first leads us to a proper assessment of our own condition. 00:19:54.194 --> 00:20:00.461 I was reading an article and the author said why is it in the church that people are not transformed by the gospel? 00:20:00.461 --> 00:20:04.864 And he answered the question because they don't really feel they need it. 00:20:04.864 --> 00:20:14.068 Telling yourself, going to a lecture that's interesting but you have no dog in the fight. 00:20:14.068 --> 00:20:23.280 It's a lecture on HIV, aids, and you go to the lecture and you learn some interesting things you didn't know about AIDS, but it's sort of just information. 00:20:23.280 --> 00:20:38.669 That's the difference between a lecture telling you about AIDS And going to a doctor who then says I'm sorry, sir or ma'am, i have to tell you you're HIV positive. 00:20:38.669 --> 00:20:41.103 Big difference, isn't there? 00:20:41.103 --> 00:20:49.174 One of the reasons the gospel doesn't transform people in the church today is we really don't think we need it. 00:20:49.174 --> 00:20:50.942 We're not that bad. 00:20:50.942 --> 00:21:00.479 So we've grown up under a gospel that focuses on behavior Don't smoke, don't drink, don't have premarital sex, go to church, live right, and that's the Christian life. 00:21:00.479 --> 00:21:18.845 So we are in the practice of helping people in their lifelong pursuit of moralism, trying to be good for Jesus, and those people are, much like Isaiah among them. 00:21:19.476 --> 00:21:21.541 I told the group I think it was Wednesday night. 00:21:21.541 --> 00:21:31.154 This may offend you I hope it doesn't But I think the low point in the Western church in America was when our face to the world was the moral majority. 00:21:31.154 --> 00:21:33.421 Now I'm not saying that, listen. 00:21:33.421 --> 00:21:38.092 I understand that America is a cesspool and abortion and adultery, and it is. 00:21:38.092 --> 00:21:42.154 It's a cesspool, but does that the face we want to present to the world? 00:21:42.154 --> 00:21:44.103 Hello, come and be with us. 00:21:44.103 --> 00:21:45.922 We're the moral majority. 00:21:45.922 --> 00:21:49.210 The truth is, we're just as distorted as them. 00:21:49.210 --> 00:21:51.777 Apart from the grace of God, There is no difference. 00:22:01.516 --> 00:22:13.154 And, like Isaiah, when you grow up in moralism which masquerades as the gospel, we're quick to condemn all the evils of society around us. 00:22:13.154 --> 00:22:18.404 Every one of us has done this and we continue to do it because we're living in a wicked age. 00:22:18.404 --> 00:22:35.165 True, but if you don't go from that to the next statement, which is that famous statement from Pogo who said we have discovered the enemy and lo, it is us, the problem is not political in America. 00:22:35.165 --> 00:22:37.154 The problem is in moralism. 00:22:37.154 --> 00:23:04.089 The problem in America is people don't know the gospel and the problem with the church is we don't know the gospel because we still think it's about behavior modification, as was the case with another guy in the Bible named Saul of Tarsus, who, as far as he's concerned, was impeccable by the standards of his day. 00:23:04.336 --> 00:23:22.305 He tells us in Philippians 3, this was a text that I used in our debate this week and I love it where he says whatever was gained to me, and he lists all of his gains I'm good, i came from the right stock, i come from the right tribe, i speak Hebrew, i'm a Pharisee and nobody in Phariseeism can put a finger on me. 00:23:22.305 --> 00:23:23.086 I'm blameless. 00:23:23.086 --> 00:23:28.462 And he says all of that, and he does use this word I'm going to clean it up because we're in church. 00:23:28.462 --> 00:23:39.049 He says it's all horse manure, the very thing that many of us pursue in church life. 00:23:39.049 --> 00:23:41.134 He calls it horse manure that I might not. 00:23:41.134 --> 00:23:53.765 And he goes on to say that I might have a righteousness, not of my own, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness of God, which is by faith. 00:23:53.765 --> 00:23:58.726 And when I argued for that this weekend, it drove some people nuts. 00:23:58.726 --> 00:24:03.265 Paul wasn't making pious statements. 00:24:03.265 --> 00:24:06.143 He knew. 00:24:06.143 --> 00:24:11.123 He knew how bad he really was. 00:24:14.214 --> 00:24:15.199 How about you this morning. 00:24:15.199 --> 00:24:23.846 You know, the man I just referred to called himself, in one of the epistles he wrote, the chief, the very chief, 00:24:37.174 Can you say that about yourself? 00:24:37.655 --> 00:24:44.428 If you can't, the reason is you might have spent your whole Christian life looking at the crowd and comparing yourself to --> 00:25:14.824 If you compare yourself to others, the Bible says it's stupid and you will be deceived. 00:25:14.824 --> 00:25:22.115 But if you assess yourself and if I assess myself in the presence of God, we will have a revelation of our true condition. 00:25:22.115 --> 00:25:25.174 And it ain't pretty, but we need to see it. 00:25:25.174 --> 00:25:27.174 Why do we need to see it? 00:25:28.196 --> 00:25:36.950 Isaiah, the man who's groveling before the Holy One saying all the woes that I've uttered against others, they're against me. 00:25:36.950 --> 00:25:38.580 And then it happens. 00:25:38.580 --> 00:25:40.559 Listen, this is incredible. 00:25:40.559 --> 00:26:03.766 As he's agonizing over his condition, suddenly one of the seraphs takes a blood-grenched, drenched coal from the altar with a pair of tongs and applies it to Isaiah's lips, and Isaiah hears the sweetest words a human being could ever hear on earth Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. 00:26:03.766 --> 00:26:22.098 This is the power of the gospel being applied in a visionary way, in a multi-color, technical vision for us, but it's the gospel. 00:26:23.875 --> 00:26:39.174 Knowing how deeply terrorized Isaiah was at the revelation of his true condition, think about the power of that announcement to a prophet who's groveling before God and saying my career's over, i'm woe is me, there's no
