morning is to prepare you for fasting And again, probably this is unnecessary, as I thought about it, because most of you have overeaten and are ready for a 30-day fast. 00:01:33.780 --> 00:01:36.649 Remember that in Scripture there are different kinds of fasts. 00:01:36.649 --> 00:01:37.281 There are. 00:01:37.281 --> 00:01:41.432 One of the popular fasts in Scripture seems to be a three-day fast. 00:01:41.432 --> 00:01:47.171 Any normal healthy person can do a three-day fast where you just drink water or even juices. 00:01:47.171 --> 00:01:56.649 Some in Scripture there's the Levitical fast, where people don't eat until sundown, and I do a lot of those fasts where you only eat one meal in the evening. 00:01:56.649 --> 00:01:57.430 That's a good fast. 00:01:57.430 --> 00:02:06.766 And there are, of course, longer fasts And maybe some of us in the body will be directed by the Holy Spirit to do longer fasts seven days to 21 days. 00:02:06.766 --> 00:02:13.853 We have done 40-day fasts and I really think you need more than a day preparation for that. 00:02:13.853 --> 00:02:25.808 You might be directed to do a seven to 21-day fast where people only drink liquids and no solids, and I trust that if you feel directed to do a longer fast. 00:02:25.808 --> 00:02:32.710 You will prepare your body and not just rush into it, and you can find good information on the web about how to prepare your body. 00:02:32.840 --> 00:02:43.689 But what I want to do in this message is take a few minutes and motivate you for this time of fasting, and I'm calling this What to Eat When You're of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 00:03:10.471 --> 00:03:12.807 And turn over quickly to Psalm 16. was, and we want to look at specifically at what the writer of Hebrews records about Abraham I'm sorry about Moses in verse 24, by faith, moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 00:04:07.174 --> 00:04:20.129 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 00:04:20.129 --> 00:04:45.346 Father, i pray, in the name of the Lord Jesus, that every man and woman in this room this morning, and men and women in this church who could not make it this morning that you entice us, seduce us with a greater pleasure found in you than that which the world, the flesh and the devil could ever pray that you speak to every member of this church about what you would have them to do in participating with this time of fasting and prayer, whether it's meals or days of not eating, or perhaps even I'm calling this what to eat when you're fasting, because you might be surprised by me saying this, but listen to me Fasting, if properly understood, is really about feasting Feasting in God. doing a hunger strike? 00:05:59.903 --> 00:06:07.290 I've done one week fast where I wasn't thinking about God and Jesus but about Burger King. 00:06:07.290 --> 00:06:09.533 Have it your way. 00:06:09.533 --> 00:06:13.307 I, even you, know it gets the point where crystals looks inviting. 00:06:13.307 --> 00:06:25.802 But here's the deal Fasting is not really about giving up food for its own sake, but about being so hungry for God. 00:06:25.802 --> 00:06:28.307 You're not even thinking about eating. 00:06:28.307 --> 00:06:37.682 Some people fast, but it is little more than a hunger strike because they're focused on not eating. 00:06:37.682 --> 00:06:42.050 But what we should do when we fast is think about eating. 00:06:42.050 --> 00:06:45.468 We should think richly about eating. 00:06:45.468 --> 00:06:48.829 We should become spiritual gluttons. 00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:58.293 The reason we fast biblically is we are motivated by something other than food and our own needs. 00:06:58.293 --> 00:07:06.732 Fasting is really about the heart crying out I want this more than my necessary food. 00:07:06.732 --> 00:07:14.266 That's how Jesus remember summed it up in the wilderness when he was fasting for 40 days. 00:07:14.266 --> 00:07:16.557 And the devil tempts him to eat. 00:07:16.557 --> 00:07:26.463 And his retort was man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that precedes from the mouth of God. 00:07:26.463 --> 00:07:30.221 And that's what fasting is about. 00:07:30.221 --> 00:07:31.961 This is what this message is about. 00:07:31.961 --> 00:07:41.605 It's about really being hungry for God, so hungry for God, and forget about your own bodily needs for a time to pursue Him. 00:07:41.654 --> 00:07:46.927 I like the way Wesley Duel, in one of his books, stated what fasting is. 00:07:46.927 --> 00:08:11.399 He said, quote fasting in the biblical sense is choosing not to partake of food because your spiritual hunger is so deep, your determination in intercession so intense or your spiritual warfare so demanding, you temporarily set aside even fleshly needs to give yourself to prayer and meditation. 00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:13.319 But I want to take it further. 00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:18.625 Let me tell you what this message is about, and then I'll try to prove it from Scripture. 00:08:18.625 --> 00:08:32.485 Fasting really is about finding pleasure in things other than food and entertainment and sex and everything else the world can offer. 00:08:32.485 --> 00:08:38.024 It's ultimately about finding pleasure in God. 00:08:40.835 --> 00:08:44.245 One day a Bible teacher came on the radio and here's what he said. 00:08:44.245 --> 00:09:05.346 He said these words the greatest single insight I've ever had in studying Scripture, the single most important principle I ever discovered, is this The goal or purpose of the Christian life is to glorify God, not to be happy. 00:09:05.346 --> 00:09:13.648 And I'm sure that when he said that, thousands of listeners in radio land agreed. 00:09:13.648 --> 00:09:19.267 The goal of the Christian life is to glorify God, not be happy. 00:09:19.267 --> 00:09:37.027 And I myself once would have wholeheartedly agreed with that statement, because I grew up in a church where we were taught that God was more interested in my holiness than my happiness and therefore I should put my happiness aside and seek to be holy. 00:09:37.027 --> 00:09:42.206 And in my mind for years holiness and happiness were antithetical. 00:09:42.206 --> 00:09:43.941 They were opposed to each other. 00:09:43.941 --> 00:09:47.743 If you were going to be holy, face it, you're going to be miserable. 00:09:47.743 --> 00:09:58.883 I want to stand here this morning and tell you unabashedly I no longer agree with the evangelist statement on radio. 00:09:58.883 --> 00:10:16.340 In fact, i want to assault you with this thought I actually believe the opposite is biblical, that the goal or purpose of the Christian life is the pursuit of happiness, but a happiness found completely in God. 00:10:19.274 --> 00:10:20.658 Now don't get me wrong. 00:10:20.658 --> 00:10:29.847 I understand where that Bible teacher was coming from, because we're all sick of the self-centeredness of not only our world but the majority of the church. 00:10:29.847 --> 00:10:31.038 It's nauseating. 00:10:31.038 --> 00:10:47.799 Our theology is so sick that we have construed a God who serves us, and I understand what he was saying He was echoing the proper biblical belief that God's glory must be paramount in the way we live our lives. 00:10:47.799 --> 00:10:56.923 But unfortunately, in doing that and saying that, he was creating this tension between God's glory and our happiness. 00:10:56.923 --> 00:11:01.666 And somehow he said they are opposed and you have to choose. 00:11:01.666 --> 00:11:04.763 Here is the truth that will set you free. 00:11:04.763 --> 00:11:08.620 They are not opposed, they are gloriously wedded. 00:11:08.620 --> 00:11:13.024 Your happiness and God's glory are not opposed. 00:11:13.024 --> 00:11:14.839 You can have both. 00:11:14.839 --> 00:11:26.657 In fact, i want to shock you even more and say I glorify God most when I am most satisfied in Him. 00:11:26.657 --> 00:11:41.020 Somebody was glorifying a movie to me, so I had to see it because they were glorifying, they were praising it And nobody was paying them to do it. 00:11:41.020 --> 00:11:50.224 They took delight, they found pleasure in this flick and they were talking about it And I said I've got to see it because they're so delighted with it. 00:11:52.514 --> 00:11:59.389 Now, this is a concept that is probably difficult for some of us to really understand. 00:11:59.389 --> 00:12:01.259 Many here might be uncomfortable with it. 00:12:01.259 --> 00:12:11.380 I mean, you might be thinking aren't we supposed to serve God and forget about our own happiness and live a life of sacrifice? 00:12:11.380 --> 00:12:13.620 But here's the thing I want to say to you. 00:12:13.620 --> 00:12:14.437 Listen carefully. 00:12:14.437 --> 00:12:18.080 The fact is it is impossible. 00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:26.501 Impossible for a human being to live without seeking his or her happiness. 00:12:26.914 --> 00:12:29.062 It's not that we shouldn't seek our happiness. 00:12:29.062 --> 00:12:38.782 It is that there is a law of our soul that says men and women will always seek to be happy, no matter what. 00:12:38.782 --> 00:12:42.004 And you should never be ashamed of that desire. 00:12:42.004 --> 00:12:47.346 It is no different than, and as natural as, the desire for hunger. 00:12:47.346 --> 00:12:48.857 How many of you are hungry right now? 00:12:48.857 --> 00:12:50.503 I haven't had breakfast. 00:12:56.777 It's natural. 00:12:56.777 --> 00:13:02.662 If you skip breakfast and you preach, i'll be looking for a Burger King very shortly. 00:13:02.662 --> 00:13:15.030 And so it is that the desire to be happy, to be satisfied, is natural. 00:13:16.354 --> 00:13:18.979 The philosopher Blaise Pascal. 00:13:18.979 --> 00:13:24.629 He talked about happiness as the natural desire of all men. 00:13:24.629 --> 00:13:28.436 He said it this way, quote all men seek happiness. 00:13:28.436 --> 00:13:31.126 This is without exception. 00:13:31.126 --> 00:13:36.640 Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. 00:13:36.640 --> 00:13:49.350 The cause of some going to war and of others avoiding it is the same desire in both, attended with different views, the will never takes the least step. 00:13:49.350 --> 00:13:52.096 But to this object of happiness. 00:13:52.096 --> 00:13:59.818 This is the motive of every action, of every man, even of those who hang themselves. 00:13:59.818 --> 00:14:04.610 Now I remember first reading that and saying what Pascal? 00:14:04.610 --> 00:14:12.522 you're nuts, you're telling me that someone hangs himself because he wants to be happy. 00:14:12.522 --> 00:14:19.912 But then I thought about it, because I originally thought, well, someone's hanging themselves because they're so unhappy. 00:14:19.912 --> 00:14:23.038 But then I realized what Pascal was saying. 00:14:23.264 --> 00:14:33.916 The truth is, men and women who commit suicide do so because they believe, unfortunately, that death will bring them more happiness than life ever could. 00:14:33.916 --> 00:14:41.474 So even in the attempt to take your life, it is motivated by a greater desire to be happy. 00:14:41.474 --> 00:14:46.750 They believe, unfortunately, that death will deliver them from the miseries of life. 00:14:46.750 --> 00:14:54.427 So it is a law of the human soul that we seek to be happy. 00:14:54.427 --> 00:14:55.349 It is natural. 00:14:55.349 --> 00:15:09.086 But somehow many Christians have convinced themselves that the only way to act virtuous is to compel ourselves to do something against our native desire to be happy. 00:15:09.086 --> 00:15:18.971 I grew up believing that the worth of my acts was determined by the depth of pain and sacrifice I endured when I performed it. 00:15:21.017 --> 00:15:31.403 Now, having laid that foundation, and I'm sure you're not all convinced, come with me into the texts that we read this morning. 00:15:31.403 --> 00:15:35.090 Three of them, because they all use the same word. 00:15:35.090 --> 00:15:40.620 All three have the word pleasure in them. 00:15:40.620 --> 00:15:44.869 One says delight, but it is also translated pleasure. 00:15:44.869 --> 00:15:51.527 The psalmist in Psalm 16 talked about, at your right hand, our pleasures. 00:15:51.527 --> 00:15:52.568 Forevermore. 00:15:52.568 --> 00:16:03.157 Moses found greater pleasure in identifying with a race of slaves than he did enjoying all the treasures of the Egyptian court. 00:16:03.157 --> 00:16:17.607 Apparently, from these three texts and I could produce a string of others apparently God is interested in our pleasure And, as I said earlier, that's not. 00:16:18.350 --> 00:16:24.407 Pleasure was not a word that was used in our Pentecostal church for the Christian life. 00:16:24.407 --> 00:16:35.940 Pleasure was the word used for what you did before you were a Christian and unfortunately, in some church experiences I was taught. 00:16:35.940 --> 00:16:38.645 You know, i was the Psalm one Christian. 00:16:38.645 --> 00:16:42.072 We were big on verse one of Psalm one. 00:16:42.072 --> 00:16:45.239 That was our verse in our Pentecostal church. 00:16:45.239 --> 00:16:53.754 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the godly or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of the scornful. 00:16:53.754 --> 00:16:54.576 And that was it. 00:16:54.576 --> 00:16:58.970 We started our Christian life by determining what we didn't do. 00:16:58.970 --> 00:17:07.373 We didn't walk in the counsel of the ungodly or stand in the way of sinners, and we were the not do people. 00:17:07.413 --> 00:17:19.482 The Christian life was characterized for me by what you didn't do And in fact you signed a card to get into this church saying what you wouldn't do? 00:17:19.482 --> 00:17:23.932 I think it was smoking and drinking and bowling. 00:17:23.932 --> 00:17:26.519 I think it was bowling. 00:17:26.519 --> 00:17:37.980 I never figured out why bowling was demonic, i know, actually I think one was going to the movies, and so there's no hope for me. 00:17:40.645 --> 00:18:02.683 But one day, as a young Christian, i read Psalm one, verse two Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly or sit in the seat of the scornful or stand in the way of sinners, but his delight is in the law of the Lord. 00:18:02.683 --> 00:18:05.692 And that verse jumped out and assaulted me. 00:18:05.692 --> 00:18:08.318 I said what is that delight? 00:18:08.318 --> 00:18:12.991 My Christian life at the time was not characterized by the word delight. 00:18:12.991 --> 00:18:16.040 It was characterized by the word duty. 00:18:16.040 --> 00:18:20.195 And I tried to look up delight in the Hebrew so I could do away with it. 00:18:20.195 --> 00:18:24.820 But it was worse, because most times that Hebrew word is translated pleasure. 00:18:24.820 --> 00:18:29.126 Here's a man saying yes, we're in covenant with Jehovah. 00:18:29.126 --> 00:18:39.672 We don't walk in the counsel of the ungodly or stand in the way of sinners, but we are men and women who find great pleasure in the law of God. 00:18:39.672 --> 00:18:45.424 So pleasurable is the law that day and night we make it our meditation. 00:18:47.615 --> 00:19:03.616 And I learned that the godly man is not just a man characterized by what he doesn't do, but by the delight, the pleasure in the things he does do. 00:19:03.616 --> 00:19:17.729 See, i had learned what God expected at me, but I had never found listen because this goes to the heart of white grace as the only means of living the Christian life I never seemed to find. 00:19:17.729 --> 00:19:22.778 Though I had a heart to obey, i never found the power to carry it out. 00:19:22.778 --> 00:19:24.729 I was not finding pleasure. 00:19:24.729 --> 00:19:29.385 In fact, i was asking tough questions, like you know. 00:19:29.385 --> 00:19:35.157 How do I give generously when my heart is held captive to greed and materialism? 00:19:35.157 --> 00:19:41.455 Or how do I love irritating people when I can't stand the sight of them? 00:19:41.455 --> 00:19:51.785 I know you've never asked that in this church Or how do I walk in sexual purity when my flesh rages with sinful passions and lust? 00:19:51.785 --> 00:19:57.654 Or how do I serve in the children's ministry when, the truth is, i don't want to be bothered. 00:20:01.105 --> 00:20:13.250 And I began to learn that no amount of appeals to shame or fears or threats could work to change me. 00:20:13.250 --> 00:20:23.634 And I found a quote by a man that sums up the way I lived the Christian life before I burst into an understanding of the grace of God in Scripture. 00:20:23.634 --> 00:20:39.775 Before long I found myself living as Jeff Imbach describes when he says, quote life becomes proscribed by all the things we should avoid and prescribed by all the things we must be careful to do. 00:20:39.775 --> 00:20:48.655 We're so busy trying to demonstrate our spiritual correctness that we lose the art of living out of our souls. 00:20:48.655 --> 00:20:57.318 We downsize our souls to achieve a safer bottom line of religious acceptability. 00:20:57.318 --> 00:21:10.744 We are left to live between the rock of crisp, correct religious rules and the hard place of duty-bound activity as supposed proof of our spiritual fervor. 00:21:10.744 --> 00:21:31.116 What became evident to me in those early years is that I knew the rules, i knew what was expected, but no one had ever taught me that the power to live the Christian life was found in learning to take great pleasure in God Himself. 00:21:33.748 --> 00:21:43.765 And I am convinced today which is why I will not do it that the religious approach to dissuading people from sinning is seriously flawed. 00:21:43.765 --> 00:21:55.785 We spend time in the church focusing on sin and focusing on the negative and telling people what we shouldn't do, and we use threats and prohibitions to try to get them to obey God. 00:21:55.785 --> 00:22:11.695 And we do so by drawing up lists of proscribed activities that Christians can do and people and events that define the Christian life, and we throw in not only Scripture, but we throw in a few of our own. 00:22:11.695 --> 00:22:21.477 Everybody has, every church has their private list of taboos, and what has holiness become according to this pattern? 00:22:21.477 --> 00:22:41.855 It's measured essentially by how successful we are in saying no to our list of personal prohibitions, and so what happens ultimately is our identity in Christ therefore becomes defined by what we don't do. 00:22:41.855 --> 00:22:53.684 But I have this question this morning In the long run, how effective in our fight against sin are prohibitions and threats? 00:22:54.406 --> 00:23:01.785 Do you find yourself more and more conformed to the image of Jesus because of your list of dos and don'ts? 00:23:01.785 --> 00:23:02.627 Don't get me wrong. 00:23:02.627 --> 00:23:06.785 I'm not suggesting there isn't a place for warnings and threats of punishment. 00:23:06.785 --> 00:23:13.233 The Bible is full of them, i'm aware of that, and they are for our welfare and should be heeded. 00:23:13.233 --> 00:23:26.374 But here is what I'm saying In the long run, it takes more than threats to energize our hearts towards God. 00:23:26.374 --> 00:23:37.459 It takes grace, a grace that allows us to find greater pleasure in God than anything the world has to offer. 00:23:37.865 --> 00:23:43.933 What we need to do and let me take a moment and do it this morning is we really need to examine the reasons we sin. 00:23:43.933 --> 00:23:46.652 Does anybody know the reasons we sin? 00:23:46.652 --> 00:23:51.134 Very few people inquire about why they sin. 00:23:51.134 --> 00:23:55.050 They just do it, but they remain clueless as to why they sin. 00:23:55.050 --> 00:24:01.875 How many know one thing's for sure we don't sin out of a sense of moral duty. 00:24:01.875 --> 00:24:12.037 How many woke up this morning and said okay, let's see, i need to commit four sins before breakfast and six after lunch? 00:24:12.037 --> 00:24:17.315 No, we don't sin because we feel like we have to. 00:24:17.315 --> 00:24:20.785 We're not under a moral rule of sinning. 00:24:20.785 --> 00:24:22.310 Why then do we sin? 00:24:22.310 --> 00:24:25.250 It's very simple, but listen to this. 00:24:25.250 --> 00:24:26.785 It is critical to grace. 00:24:27.226 --> 00:24:33.195 We sin because of the pleasure it brings, because it makes us feel good. 00:24:33.195 --> 00:24:39.785 In fact, the Hebrews passage we read confirms it. 00:24:39.785 --> 00:24:44.973 It refers to the passing pleasures of sin. 00:24:44.973 --> 00:24:58.953 In a nutshell, we sin because we are convinced that the passing pleasure it will bring us is greater than what God can give us. 00:24:58.953 --> 00:25:12.358 The power of temptation is the false promise that sin will make us happier than God.
