00:00:36.671 --> 00:00:38.054 Amen. 00:00:38.054 --> 00:00:41.148 So if you need something from God, you can get it tonight. 00:00:41.148 --> 00:00:47.231 Also, if you want to give something from God to other people, you can get that tonight as well. 00:00:47.231 --> 00:00:48.764 That's what it's about. 00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:53.470 Alright, so we're going to start tonight with the definition of gifts of healings. 00:00:53.470 --> 00:01:08.572 Remember, in 1 Corinthians 12, we've been studying over the last several times that we've met the gifts of the Spirit, and one of the listings there, one of the nine gifts that are there, is called gifts of healings. 00:01:08.572 --> 00:01:11.308 It's kind of unique because it's plural. 00:01:11.308 --> 00:01:14.769 It's not singular like most of the rest of the gifts. 00:01:14.769 --> 00:01:22.512 This one is plural and so there seems to be different gifts for different types of healings. 00:01:22.512 --> 00:01:27.007 How many of you realize there's more than just physical healing that's needed by people. 00:01:27.007 --> 00:01:33.409 There's all kinds of different healing that we need. 00:01:35.159 --> 00:01:40.350 So the gifts of healings the definition is a supernatural manifestation. 00:01:40.350 --> 00:01:42.563 Where does that come from? 00:01:42.563 --> 00:01:52.061 From God For the healing of sicknesses or diseases in varying ways, without any natural source or means. 00:01:52.061 --> 00:02:05.400 And I'll expand it a little bit beyond that, because I do believe that there are times that God will use even medicine, or He'll use the medical field to help to bring about healing. 00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:09.890 But ultimately, when we are healed, who do we give the glory and honor to? 00:02:09.890 --> 00:02:15.390 We give the glory and honor to God, because he's the only one deserving of it. 00:02:15.390 --> 00:02:26.747 So over the last 40 plus years as a follower of Jesus Christ, I have encountered just about every way of thinking when it comes to healing. 00:02:26.747 --> 00:02:37.051 I have talked to so many different people through the years who have different vantage points, different experiences, different belief systems concerning healing. 00:02:37.051 --> 00:02:47.163 And I want to just quickly just touch on two kind of caricatures, two larger than life ways of thinking in it Before I about it. 00:02:47.163 --> 00:03:11.193 But before I say that, I want you to know that I have personally seen the Lord heal hundreds of people throughout the 40 plus years of ministry that I've been involved in I'm not saying that I was the one always that was being used by God to pray for people but I have observed with these eyes the healing power of God over and over and over again. 00:03:11.540 --> 00:03:18.489 And the reason I'm going to be saying things like that tonight is because we're desiring to create an atmosphere of faith here tonight. 00:03:18.489 --> 00:03:23.449 We're not trying to create something that's outside of God. 00:03:23.449 --> 00:03:26.787 We're trying to create a connection with God. 00:03:26.787 --> 00:03:31.669 Faith is not faith in my ability to make something happen. 00:03:31.669 --> 00:03:45.649 Faith is believing that there is a God that's greater than us, that has the ability to do what he says that he will do, and so as we talk tonight, we share some of the stories we're going to share. 00:03:45.649 --> 00:03:53.894 I want you to just allow yourself the anticipation within your heart of the move of God in your life. 00:03:53.894 --> 00:03:56.007 I want you to let that grow tonight. 00:03:56.080 --> 00:04:12.449 I know I'm allowing and asking the Lord to allow me to see that happen, but in my early years in life the philosophy that we had is that if you believed enough, if you could believe enough, that you could basically heal yourself. 00:04:12.449 --> 00:04:18.711 Now we use Christian terminology around it, but that's really what it was about. 00:04:18.711 --> 00:04:22.430 It was really a form of like Christian science. 00:04:22.430 --> 00:04:24.406 It was like mind over matter. 00:04:24.406 --> 00:04:31.314 If you could convince your mind, if you could say it enough times, then you could make yourself well Okay. 00:04:31.314 --> 00:04:52.470 Now I want you to know that even in the middle of hearing all of those things and believing those things, the Lord still moved miraculously and healed people and performed miracles, because God is most interested in what His glory one and then two the needs of the people. 00:04:52.470 --> 00:05:03.531 And so God will use imperfect people and imperfect theology and imperfect scenarios and imperfect churches and imperfect pastors, imperfect young people. 00:05:03.531 --> 00:05:06.327 I know you guys are close to perfect, but not quite there yet. 00:05:06.327 --> 00:05:15.329 In fact, he'll use us because he wants to, he chooses to right, and that's powerful. 00:05:15.329 --> 00:05:16.423 It's a powerful truth. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:25.624 Now, the problem with the doctrine that I grew up believing is if it didn't work, then obviously who was to blame? 00:05:47.048 --> 00:06:04.793 I've never met a person that could, ultimately at the end of their life, whenever that was, whatever day that was, whatever hour that was, whatever minute that was, I've never seen a person be able to confess or pray, or you know what I'm saying. 00:06:04.793 --> 00:06:06.607 I mean, the Lord can extend our lives. 00:06:06.607 --> 00:06:09.307 Of course people can come back from the dead. 00:06:09.307 --> 00:06:10.925 God could raise people from the dead. 00:06:10.925 --> 00:06:12.663 All of those realities are true. 00:06:12.663 --> 00:06:21.509 But ultimately, even Lazarus, even though he was raised from the dead, eventually died right. 00:06:21.509 --> 00:06:34.786 So if you take the theology that says that, if you believe enough, if you think it enough, if you say it enough, that you're going to be healed every time, then ultimately what you're saying is that we should never die. 00:06:34.786 --> 00:06:41.730 And that might be nice, might be nice, you know, but it's not going to happen. 00:06:41.730 --> 00:06:44.689 And I'm not trying to be silly or to make fun of anything. 00:06:44.689 --> 00:06:51.682 I'm just letting you know that there are shortfalls when you get into the ditch on either side when it comes to healing. 00:06:58.579 --> 00:07:21.165 I think I've mentioned this before, so I'll just gloss over it, but my first experience with understanding that this was not a godly thing is that when I was about five years old, we were going to a church, my dad was going to Bible college, we were being taught these things and a lady in the church got cancer and she decided she was going to trust the Lord and we all began to pray for her. 00:07:21.165 --> 00:07:24.324 She didn't get medical help, she didn't get any treatments of any kind. 00:07:24.324 --> 00:07:25.067 That was her choice. 00:07:25.067 --> 00:07:27.781 She chose to do that and she died. 00:07:27.781 --> 00:07:35.605 And the next week the pastor got up and said we love Sister So-and-so, we just wish she had had a little more faith. 00:07:35.605 --> 00:07:43.745 And as a five-year-old, six-year-old kid, something on the inside of me rose up and said that's wrong. 00:07:43.745 --> 00:07:46.646 There's something about that that's wrong. 00:07:47.920 --> 00:07:56.411 And so, ultimately, when you believe things, we need to make sure that we're believing things based on the counsel of Scripture, not on half a verse here and half a verse there. 00:07:56.411 --> 00:08:06.327 We need to make sure that our theology lines up with the Word of God, not just from experience or from somebody's perspective based on their life. 00:08:06.327 --> 00:08:10.086 We have to be careful in those areas. 00:08:10.086 --> 00:08:14.591 Now, that does not mean that we don't need to have faith for healing. 00:08:14.591 --> 00:08:21.730 We do need to have faith, but it needs to be in God, not in my ability to somehow make it happen. 00:08:21.730 --> 00:08:25.444 God is not a slot machine. 00:08:25.444 --> 00:08:29.843 He's not, and I feel like that. 00:08:29.843 --> 00:08:30.384 At times. 00:08:30.384 --> 00:08:38.787 People treat Him like he's a celestial Santa Claus or he's a slot machine and that's not who God is. 00:08:39.799 --> 00:08:43.328 So on the other side of things, another approach is a hands-off approach. 00:08:43.328 --> 00:08:46.666 It's like bless me if you can. 00:08:46.666 --> 00:08:53.191 You know, if God wants to heal me, he'll heal me, but I'm not going to do anything about it. 00:08:53.191 --> 00:08:58.671 Now it really depends on the motivation behind that. 00:08:58.671 --> 00:09:07.892 If your motivation is sincere and you believe that God is sovereign and you believe that he has the best in mind for you and your heart's right in it, then that's fine. 00:09:07.892 --> 00:09:23.590 But if you're just kind of detached from any kind of faith toward God and you're just saying, well, let's just roll the dice, it doesn't matter what I do or what I say, if I pray or if I don't pray, that could be wrong too. 00:09:23.590 --> 00:09:25.302 That's a wrong approach. 00:09:25.302 --> 00:09:35.269 Some people would even make it spiritual I don't need to bother Him, god's very busy and I'm not that important. 00:09:35.269 --> 00:09:38.407 I don't want to make a big deal about myself. 00:09:38.407 --> 00:09:42.283 Here's the thing that you need to know. 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:49.686 All of the Bible is really about one thing God wanting to relate with His people. 00:09:49.686 --> 00:09:58.101 And so now that that's possible because of Jesus Christ, why would he grow weary of talking to us?
