WEBVTT 00:00:04.559 --> 00:00:11.439 Father, thank you for all of us who that you would reveal yourself tonight. 00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:15.199 That we would have a real encounter with you, with who you are. 00:00:15.199 --> 00:00:17.760 Lord, open our eyes. 00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:20.320 Amen. 00:00:20.320 --> 00:00:29.760 So we've been in this series called Revealed, in which we've been looking at the names of God and how they reveal God's nature as it really as it relates to us. 00:00:29.760 --> 00:00:35.119 And tonight we're looking at specifically a Jehovah Rohi, God our shepherd. 00:00:35.119 --> 00:00:45.039 This name comes from Psalm 23, and it's the only place that this word, this name, Jehovah Rohi, appears in the Bible. 00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:51.039 Now you'll see the concept of God as shepherd throughout the Bible, but this specific name only appears as Psalm 23. 00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:53.359 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:57.759 That phrase, the Lord is my shepherd, it's just two words. 00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:01.600 The first two words of the passage, Yahweh Rohi. 00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:05.439 And it literally means God my shepherd. 00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:19.120 Now normally when we focus on when we focus when we start studying the names of God, quite often we focus on the second part of these hyphenated names that reveal who God is to us because we know the first part, Jehovah, it refers to God. 00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:20.319 So God is God. 00:01:20.319 --> 00:01:26.879 But tonight I want to take a look at both parts, Jehovah and Rohi, because both parts are important. 00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:37.200 So as I started looking at this, and I was looking at the name Jehovah Rohi, and then I looked at an interlinear Bible so I could see what the Hebrew actually says. 00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:41.599 Not that I can read Hebrew, but uh the interlinear gives you the English and the Hebrew together. 00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:45.439 And by the way, anybody can do this over on Biblehub.com. 00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:52.799 Um, I realized that Psalm 23 doesn't say Jehovah Rohi, it says Yahweh Rohi. 00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:58.000 So why have I always heard people say Jehovah in these in these names of God? 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.560 And is there a difference between Yahweh and Jehovah? 00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:04.719 And as I talk to people, it looks like everybody everybody had known except for me. 00:02:04.719 --> 00:02:06.719 But actually, there's no difference. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:15.599 And so to understand where we get the the name Jehovah, we have to go back to Exodus 3 when Moses met God at the Brain Bush. 00:02:15.599 --> 00:02:18.400 But Moses asked God for his name. 00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:20.719 God said, I am who I am. 00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:23.919 Now in Hebrew, that's that's eyah. 00:02:23.919 --> 00:02:29.520 Now I'm probably gonna massacre any kind of Hebrew, Hebrew language, but just go with me. 00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:33.680 In Hebrew, that's ayeh from the verb that means to be. 00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:36.080 It's the one who always is. 00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:40.719 And later God told Israel, This is my name forever, Yahweh. 00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:48.319 So it carries the same meaning as I am, the self-existent one, the ever-present one, the faithful one. 00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:55.280 Now over time, Israel held that name, that name Yahweh, in such reverence that they stopped saying it out loud. 00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:59.039 They started using Adonai, which means Lord, instead. 00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:06.560 Centuries later, Jewish scribes called the Masoretes added vowel marks to preserve pronunciation. 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:11.919 And they combined the vowels of Adonai with the consonants of Yahweh. 00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:20.560 And so then after that, Latin scholars, they they read it and transliterated it, and so they were they misread it as Jehovah instead of Yahweh. 00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:27.759 So literally, Jehovah, Yahweh, and I am, all three of those refer to the same divine name. 00:03:27.759 --> 00:03:31.520 Each one flows from the from the word meaning to be. 00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:38.000 It's the name of the eternal, self-existent God who was, who is, and will always be. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:47.199 So now that we know who Yahweh is, or at least we know God his name, then what who is Yahweh? 00:03:47.199 --> 00:03:49.120 Because we have Yahweh Rahi. 00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:50.319 Well, who is Yahweh? 00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:53.840 This is how God introduces himself to Moses in Israel. 00:03:53.840 --> 00:03:57.759 He uses he used three different phrases in Exodus. 00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:02.159 He said when he was talking to Moses about this, and he says, I am who I am. 00:04:02.159 --> 00:04:05.199 He says, I am has sent me to you. 00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:13.039 And he says, The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. 00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:20.240 Now this may sound a little bit redundant, you know, because I'm going to tell you the same thing, but I want you to think about it. 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:23.199 This is Israel's first encounter with God. 00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:25.439 Okay, so Moses says, Who are you? 00:04:25.439 --> 00:04:26.319 Who do I tell them? 00:04:26.319 --> 00:04:38.560 And so God gives him these three these three names, really two, um, because I am, he uses twice, but he gives them two names to tell Israel who he is. 00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:43.120 One is Eyeh, which means I am, the self-existent one. 00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:46.639 God's being depends on nobody else. 00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:53.279 And then Yahweh, he is the God of your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:04.560 And the reference, even though they they probably weren't too sure about who this Yahweh was, they would recognize the reference back to the fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:07.600 Because they know their covenant. 00:05:07.600 --> 00:05:12.639 And so God is saying, Hey, I'm the covenant faithful one. 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:17.759 I'm the one who is who he has always promised to be. 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:24.000 God has just declared his greatness and his faithfulness at the same time. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:34.160 And so then, that's what so Moses goes and delivers that delivers that to the to Israel and says, This is who God is, but they still don't know their God. 00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:42.240 So to prove who he is, God begins by demonstrating that he's greater than all the gods of Egypt through the ten plagues. 00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:57.360 He exhibits he's greater than anything in nature by parting the Red Sea, and more powerful than one of the most powerful armies, the people who've oppressed them for years by decimating the entire Egyptian army as he parted the parted the Red Sea. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:03.600 And he continues after that in the desert by raining down manna and bringing forth water out of the rock. 00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:07.439 And we know the stories from the you know from the Exodus. 00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:09.199 This is Jehovah. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:11.040 This is Yahweh. 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:18.000 And through the years, God continued to reveal himself to Israel in different ways, and Israel gave him gave him different names. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:23.759 And so the study we've been doing on Wednesday nights, it's allowing us to see some of those names and what they really mean. 00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:31.759 And each name came about when a person or group encountered God and then saw him demonstrate his character in some way. 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:40.240 So, like with the previous with the previous uh sessions here in the series, we had Jehovah Jirah, the Lord will provide. 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:46.079 That comes from Genesis 22, when Abraham names the place where God provided the ram for Isaac's sacrifice. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:48.720 We had Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals. 00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:50.480 And that's from Exodus 15. 00:06:50.480 --> 00:06:54.879 God reveals himself as the healer of Israel after bringing them out of Egypt. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.079 And then we have Jehovah Nisi, the Lord is my banner. 00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:06.959 And that comes from Exodus 17, where Moses builds an altar after uh after the victory over Amalek and names it to honor God's victory. 00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:11.519 And then what we're talking about tonight is Jehovah Rohi, the Lord is my shepherd. 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:13.439 And that's from Psalms 23. 00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:26.079 And you can almost imagine David sitting out on an evening looking up at the stars, and he's he's thinking about the different things that he does as a shepherd of sheep, and he starts realizing God's been doing the same thing with him. 00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:31.759 And it leads him to declare the Lord as his shepherd, who provides, who guides, who protects him. 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:40.399 But I want to I want you to, all the all these different names, there's something in common with all with all of them. 00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:42.800 They always begin with Jehovah. 00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:44.879 They begin with Yahweh. 00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:47.120 He is the great I am. 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:49.600 It's in his name. 00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:54.160 He's the self, self-existent one, forever being, not bound by time or place. 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:56.639 And David talks about it in Psalm 90. 00:07:56.639 --> 00:08:05.199 Before the mountains were born, or you were brought or you brought forth the whole world from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. 00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:09.120 His greatness is in his nature. 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:11.839 He's the eternal, majestic creator. 00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:17.120 Every galaxy that burns with who knows how many suns was lit by his word. 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:23.040 He calls each star by name, and he knows your name, each one of us. 00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:27.920 You know, Isaiah 40 26 says, Lift up your eyes on high and see. 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:29.360 Who created these? 00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:33.759 He who brings out their hosts by number, calling them all by name. 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:38.159 Not only that, it his nature is entirely holy and pure. 00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:47.120 You know, in Isaiah 6, when Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, with the angels crying out, Holy, holy, holy, the whole earth is full of his glory. 00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:52.000 Isaiah didn't speak, he just kind of crumbled. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:58.480 Holiness is not just this moral perfection, it's the blazing purity of God's being. 00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:00.320 It's who he is. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:03.840 His greatness is found in his power and his sovereignty. 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:09.919 When Job demanded answers after all the things he'd been through, God gave him a tour of creation. 00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:14.240 God answered him, said, Well, where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.320 Tell me if you understand that. 00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:19.039 It's in Job 38, if you want to look it up. 00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:23.679 Job realized that the one who rules the lightning doesn't have to answer to man. 00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:27.840 His greatness is in his covenant faithfulness. 00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:39.360 The God who measures the universe by the span of his hand stoops to bind himself to dust because his love endures forever. 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:54.240 Deuteronomy 7, he says to Israel, Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. 00:09:54.240 --> 00:10:05.919 And then David echoes it in Psalm 103 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children. 00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:07.919 And that's what he's saying to us. 00:10:07.919 --> 00:10:12.879 This is our Jehovah, this is our Yahweh, this is our I am. 00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:17.840 And it's even found in the revelation of Jesus. 00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:21.039 The eternal I am stepped into his creation. 00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:27.039 The God who thundered on Sinai walks among us in grace and truth. 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:32.399 The same voice that said, Let there be light, said to the blind man, See. 00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:35.039 Think about that. 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:41.440 Isaiah 40, 25 says, To whom then will you compare me that I should be like him? 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:43.120 And says the Holy One. 00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:59.600 We have this high and exalted God, this self-existent, perfect, pure, and holy, eternal, majestic creator, who is all powerful and completely sovereign, and he allows us to know him in Jesus because he's faithful and full of patient, loving kindness towards us. 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:02.240 That's our Jehovah. 00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:08.399 He is ours not because we claim him, but because he came to us. 00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:28.320 When we look at Jehovah Jirah, Jehovah Raphah, Jehovah Nisi, Jehovah Rohi, or any of the other names by which he's known, it always begins with Jehovah, Yahweh, the great I Am. 00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:31.200 That's the first part. 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:42.399 And we look at when we look at the part second part of any name of God, we have to remember that it's not just a nice description, it's one facet of our great and mighty God. 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:54.399 So now, after beholding Jehovah and all his majesty, the self-existent, all powerful I am, we now see him stoop low as Jehovah Rohi, my shepherd. 00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:58.000 The infinite God becomes intimately present. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:01.759 And there are so many different ways we can look at Psalm 23. 00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:04.480 So how about we just start by reading it? 00:12:04.480 --> 00:12:08.960 A Psalm of David, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not lack. 00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:19.440 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul, he leads me a paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:25.200 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you're with me. 00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:27.679 Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 00:12:27.679 --> 00:12:31.440 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:35.600 You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. 00:12:35.600 --> 00:12:42.080 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. 00:12:42.080 --> 00:12:50.799 Our great transcendent God cares for every aspect of our lives, and that's the idea of the shepherd. 00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:55.279 So very quickly, I just want to run through what the shepherd does for us. 00:12:55.279 --> 00:13:00.639 Because the shepherd here in Psalm 23 is reflected over in the New Testament too. 00:13:00.639 --> 00:13:04.960 Yahweh, my shepherd, I will not lack. 00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:08.639 Jesus says in John 10, I am the good shepherd. 00:13:08.639 --> 00:13:11.519 The good shepherd lays his life down for the sheep. 00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:16.480 He gives us rest, and he provides for our basic needs like food. 00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:19.200 We see that in lie down in green pastures. 00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:25.120 Matthew 11 28 says, Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:37.120 But then in Matthew 6 2 33, when he's talking about worrying about what we'll eat and what what clothes we'll have, he says, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be taken care of. 00:13:37.120 --> 00:13:39.200 All these things will be added to you. 00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:46.399 The next phrase he leaves us beside still waters, which is a place of refreshment and safety and peace. 00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:48.720 You know, sheep are cautious animals. 00:13:48.720 --> 00:14:01.039 They have poor depth perception, and so when there's fast or noisy moving water, it looks dangerous to them, and they can't judge how deep it is, and the movement really can make them feel very disoriented. 00:14:01.039 --> 00:14:04.159 Not only that, wool is pretty heavy when it gets wet. 00:14:04.159 --> 00:14:07.440 And so if they fall in, they're going to drown pretty quickly. 00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:18.720 And the shepherds in ancient times knew this, so they often dug small trenches or channels that would divert the stream into a calm pool, and they'd wait until that settled down, and then they'd let their sheep drink. 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:25.600 You know, we go through a lot of storms in our lives, circumstances that are hard that we can't figure out, that we've got to deal with. 00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:28.000 And uh, and how do we deal with that? 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:34.320 Well, our shepherd is the one that provides a source of st of calm and stillness where we can receive for him from him. 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:38.000 And it's in that place that he restores our soul. 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:42.799 He also gives us guidance, he leads us in paths of righteousness. 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:45.120 And I love Proverbs 16:9. 00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:48.720 The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. 00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:50.720 That means I can't mess things up. 00:14:50.720 --> 00:14:53.759 Well, I can, but he's going to get me back on track. 00:14:53.759 --> 00:15:01.279 He's faithful to bring us right back into step with him, um, into paths of righteousness. 00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:04.639 He gives us peace in the valley. 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:09.120 And but David says, I will fear no evil. 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.919 In the darkest of times, we can have peace. 00:15:11.919 --> 00:15:23.600 It may not be it may not feel very peaceful, but as we look at him and focus on him until nothing else matters, it's there that we realize our peace because he is with us. 00:15:23.600 --> 00:15:24.879 And that's a key thing. 00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:26.000 He is with us. 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:28.960 Psalm Philippians 4, 5 through 7. 00:15:28.960 --> 00:15:32.559 Most people start that passage, don't be anxious for anything. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:39.679 But actually, it starts the phrase before: the Lord is at hand, the Lord's here, the Lord's with us. 00:15:39.679 --> 00:15:47.120 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything about prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:52.639 And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 00:15:52.639 --> 00:16:03.039 The reason our hearts and minds are guarded, and we have peace which passes all understanding, is because our Savior is with us. 00:16:03.039 --> 00:16:11.039 And we know that he hears us when we stop being anxious in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to him. 00:16:11.039 --> 00:16:14.720 And Isaiah 26, 3 kind of sums it up. 00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:20.320 You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 00:16:20.320 --> 00:16:23.840 So he gives us his very presence. 00:16:23.840 --> 00:16:25.919 You know, that David just says, For you are with me. 00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:28.879 But that's that phrase, you are with me, carries so much. 00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:33.679 All through the scripture, God says that he goes with us or he'll never leave us. 00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:35.360 He's he's here with us. 00:16:35.360 --> 00:16:44.799 He said it to Jacob in Genesis, to Moses in Exodus, to Israel in Deuteronomy, to Joshua in Joshua, and to Solomon in 1 Chronicles. 00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:50.000 In John 14, Jesus says that he will not leave us as orphans, but makes his home with us. 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:58.799 And there's loads more through scripture, which includes a pretty overt one in Matthew 28, 20, where he says, I'm with you always to the end of the age. 00:16:58.799 --> 00:17:02.639 But you know, he's not just here while we're here on earth. 00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:05.359 Um, and I'm getting ahead of myself. 00:17:05.359 --> 00:17:08.799 He also brings comfort in the midst of dark circumstances. 00:17:08.799 --> 00:17:10.880 Your rod and your staff comfort me. 00:17:10.880 --> 00:17:16.000 The rod the shepherd carries is for protection and occasionally for correction. 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:23.039 But you know, it's kind of comforting knowing that nothing is going to touch me unless Jesus allows it. 00:17:23.039 --> 00:17:28.720 He's got a big old rod up there, and that's not for beating people down, it's for beating the enemy off. 00:17:28.720 --> 00:17:33.039 And the staff that he has, the rod, why would it bring comfort? 00:17:33.039 --> 00:17:36.000 Because it guides, he uses it to guide the sheep. 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:38.480 He pulls them from danger and rescues them. 00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:47.440 And something else I learned is often the shepherds would walk with their staff out so the sheep the sheep could could see it, and it reminded them that he's with them. 00:17:47.440 --> 00:17:53.200 So then the next couple of phrases all fit together. 00:17:53.200 --> 00:17:57.759 He nourishes us, he prepares a table before us, he anoints our head with oil. 00:17:57.759 --> 00:18:02.720 He welcomes us in, he consecrates us, and he and he refreshes us. 00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:07.359 In ancient times, anointing with oil had several meanings. 00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:12.160 One, it was an act actually it was actually an act of hospitality. 00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:17.680 Second, it was used to consecrate someone, to set them apart for a divine purpose. 00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:22.160 But third, it was also used for healing and refreshing with sheep. 00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:30.160 The sheep had these pesky flies that would be around their head, they'd fly up their nostrils, pretty gross. 00:18:30.160 --> 00:18:32.880 But they would they could actually they could actually kill the sheep. 00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:35.519 They're a real threat. 00:18:35.519 --> 00:18:40.000 But the shepherd would anoint their head with oil, which would keep the flies off. 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:45.680 Our Savior anoints anoints us with oil. 00:18:45.680 --> 00:18:48.720 And then he says, My cup overflows. 00:18:48.720 --> 00:18:52.880 Or you could rephrase that, he gives me more than I can ask or imagine. 00:18:52.880 --> 00:19:00.880 In Ephesians 1:7 to 8, in him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. 00:19:00.880 --> 00:19:04.640 And then catch this, which he lavished upon us. 00:19:04.640 --> 00:19:17.119 So every time I read that word lavished upon us, that phrase, I think of a uh football coach who the team has just won the game and they come running up behind him with the big Gatorade and they dump it over him, and you see this thing. 00:19:17.119 --> 00:19:21.759 But I but then I think of that, and then I think, well, what about Niagara Falls? 00:19:21.759 --> 00:19:28.000 He he has just stuck me at the bottom of Niagara Falls of His grace, and he just lavishes it. 00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:32.240 He dumps this, dumps all that grace on us, on me. 00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:41.279 And then Ephesians 3.20 says, Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly all than than we can let me read this again. 00:19:41.279 --> 00:19:48.319 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we can ask or think, according to the power at work within us. 00:19:48.319 --> 00:19:51.519 Who is that power working within us?
