00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:14.480 Um so let's start with the background, the context of Jeremiah. 00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:17.600 Let's think of his role and what he did. 00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:27.120 The book of Jeremiah, major prophet, and it details the warnings and the messages from God delivered by Jeremiah to the people of Judah. 00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:34.480 At this time, there was a northern and a southern uh kingdom, if you will, Israel and Judah. 00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:38.800 So Jeremiah emphasizes the coming judgment due to idolatry. 00:05:38.800 --> 00:05:45.199 He calls the people to repentance and foretells actually the Babylonian exile. 00:05:45.199 --> 00:05:49.839 Yet he also offers hope for restoration. 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:54.160 His message truly was a hopeful message, even though he's calling people to repent. 00:05:54.160 --> 00:06:02.720 He calls he he gives the promise, um, God gives him words to speak to the promise of the new covenant, Jesus. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:17.439 So Jeremiah was called by God at an early age, very young man, and he's often described as a leaking prophet, just really show his heart for the people of um of Judah and where he's called to speak to. 00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:25.199 And one more phase a Jeremiah prophesizer in the period standing in the reigns of the last five kings in Judah. 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:31.120 So he's being Josiah, Jehoias, Jehoiakim, the boy again, Zedekiah. 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:33.759 So his ministry, we didn't understand this. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:40.399 Think of it as about 627 BC until the fall of Jerusalem in 586. 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:43.360 So a lot of instability going on. 00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:43.600 Right. 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:47.600 Um, a declining kingdom, if you will, if you think of that way. 00:06:47.600 --> 00:06:52.720 And truly a pending judgment coming from Babylon. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:07:01.360 So this um the first verse I want to kind of read, setting up Jeremiah, is talking specifically about his call. 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:08.639 So right in the beginning of the book, first chapter one through five, it says, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. 00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:10.319 This is God's arching to Jeremiah. 00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:15.839 Before you were born, I consecrated you, and I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:22.959 Then I said, Ah, Lord God, behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. 00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:31.199 The Lord said to me, Do not say I am only a youth, for to you, for to all to whom I send you, you shall vote. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:34.160 And whatever I command you, you shall speak. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:39.680 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to live, declares the Lord. 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:44.160 Somewhat unpopular message the Jemra had to share with our evil. 00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:44.959 Okay. 00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:53.839 And their nation as with you, I've appointed you as a prophet. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:05.279 So Jeremiah repeatedly calls Israel to repentance back to God. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:12.720 It was a call to righteousness and justice, and a reminder of the covenant God had made with the people. 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:19.680 We could kind of understand this as three things that made up this professor uh prophetic message. 00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:34.000 Commands, which something like forsake evil and follow God in righteousness, the warnings or a reminder of coming judgments, and promises of hope. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:38.320 An example of the commands that he gave to the people. 00:08:38.320 --> 00:08:41.840 Jeremiah to you don't have to go there, but you can if you want. 00:08:41.840 --> 00:08:43.440 It's Jeremiah 22. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:52.639 Hear the word of the Lord, O King of Judah, who sits on the throne of David, you and your servants, and your people who carry these gates. 00:08:52.639 --> 00:09:07.840 Thus says the Lord, do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed, and do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, and all shed innocent blood in this place. 00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:10.240 He's calling people to justice. 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:14.399 He's calling people to your righteous life, to walk before her. 00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:22.240 Number two, the warnings or reminders of the covenant in Jeremiah 11. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.240 This is an example. 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:41.200 Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, curse be the man who does not hear the words of this covenant that I commanded your fathers, where I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Listen to my voice and do all that I command you. 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:50.720 And then this phrase you see over and over and over again in Old Testament scripture, so shall you be my people, and I will be your God. 00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:58.559 He's calling them to the covenant, something that he established between two parties, God and Israel. 00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:03.039 And the promise we read it, verse 6, Jeremiah 23, 6. 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:04.159 We've read the promise. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:13.679 I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he shall reign as Cain and do wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:18.240 In his days, Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. 00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:22.320 And this is in the name by what you will be called, the Lord of righteousness. 00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:23.840 Jehovah said King. 00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:26.559 That sounds really good. 00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:30.399 That is a promise that they can hold on to, that we can hold on to. 00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:39.440 How is this promise hope that this rule in Judah, as well as our current internal hope today? 00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:42.399 This was 600 BC. 00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:49.360 400 years and or 400 years ago in righteousness to Israel who are already God's covenant people. 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:56.240 So Israel was already was already called I doubt for a specific person or purpose and walked before him languistly. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:59.120 So Jeremiah's call is to something greater. 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:06.879 Not just coexisting as a moral or kind of conservative who respected his peers and community. 00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:12.480 It was to remind Jia of the living God and the covenant he made with him. 00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:17.039 So let's talk quickly about the covenant. 00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:18.159 What was it? 00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:24.399 Um, I think it would be good to remind ourselves of the specific language God calls the nation to. 00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:36.159 Um the covenant in general could be thought of as a few things: a great nation that included land promises, that there would be a blessed nation or a blessed people. 00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:43.679 That they would be multiplied, that uh to be fruitful and multiply, there'd be many a number. 00:11:43.679 --> 00:11:47.440 Or to be righteous, a holy nation set apart. 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:53.200 Um, an outward sign of this that God commanded them was circumcision. 00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:57.679 Then we see this phrase again: I will be their God, and they will be my people. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:11:59.039 No other gods. 00:11:59.039 --> 00:12:02.240 There's one God, Yahweh, the existing one. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:15.039 We see this with Abram in Genesis 12, where God says, I will make you a great nation, I will bless you, and to your offspring I will give this land, the land of Canaan. 00:12:15.039 --> 00:12:22.320 Genesis 15, he continues this down it to get uh it says to get an heir, his offspring will be great in number. 00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:29.759 And it says that Abram believed, he had faith in the Lord, and this was counted to him as his righteousness. 00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:38.399 Genesis 17, his Abram's name is changed Abraham, he father of a multitude, or our chief of multitude. 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:44.480 And it says, he instructs Abram, I am God Almighty, walk before me and be blameless. 00:12:44.480 --> 00:12:50.080 This is the same message for all these generations that we hear in Jeremiah, reminding the people. 00:12:50.080 --> 00:13:08.000 God continues, I will make your descendants like the stars in the sky, a father of a multitude of nations, make in the nations, kings will come from you, and I will be their God, and they will be my people, a holy people set apart for God. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:19.679 It says in the next chapter that the Lord shows Abraham and says that his household Africa keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice. 00:13:19.679 --> 00:13:28.399 So there that aligns with the heart of God, calling people to walk equal and blameless, to be a people of executing justice and a righteous people. 00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:40.639 And this truly was an example for all future leaders, kings, and shepherds, hops, people, of all the people Israel to lead them into right relationship with God. 00:13:40.639 --> 00:13:56.720 We see that the Lord commanded that they walk with him as he, the only God, the one true God, and to walk before him in righteousness, the people anyways. 00:13:56.720 --> 00:14:05.519 So a holy God requires a holy nation under himself, a righteous people for God alone. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:18.720 So these texts also point to something else: that it's not only the covenant for Abraham, but rather the everlasting covenant for Abraham's descendants or his offspring. 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:26.879 Okay, that set the example, the foundation of this covenant, and it continues with Isaac. 00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:28.799 We see that in Genesis 26. 00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:37.759 Jacob, who's renamed Israel, which means God prevails, from which the 12 tribes uses similar language. 00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:49.600 Um he says, I am God Almighty, be fruitful and multiply a nation and company of nations shall come from you, and king shall come from your own body, solidifying the covenant that he's made with people. 00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:55.360 God does not forget, and he calls us active, a righteous covenant that he makes with us. 00:14:55.360 --> 00:15:00.879 This continues with Moses from the tribe of Levi in Exodus 19. 00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:14.799 The Lord instructs Moses to tell the people of Israel, thus you should say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel, You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on the eagle's wings and brohe and myself. 00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:22.080 Now, therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession. 00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:26.559 A kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:34.559 Holy mean set apart for God Allah, that your heart is free from defilement and idolatry. 00:15:34.559 --> 00:15:48.879 This was in part done through the law of Moses, revealing men their shortcomings, how to obey God and what Moses' charge was telling the people to keep this covenant and the law. 00:15:48.879 --> 00:15:54.399 And that's the promise you will be a treasured people before God, a righteous people. 00:15:54.399 --> 00:15:57.039 Let's continue. 00:15:57.039 --> 00:16:03.200 We're almost getting up to, or we're almost at the place where Jeremiah here um takes off. 00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:05.600 Jeremiah called us to what? 00:16:05.600 --> 00:16:06.320 David. 00:16:06.320 --> 00:16:11.279 Why does he remind us from Data, who was also king of Israel? 00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:19.919 What we see in the text of Jeremiah is that through the line of David, this covenant continues, and that it's an everlasting covenant. 00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:21.840 2 Samuel 7 tells us that. 00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:29.759 It says, Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me, and your throne shall be established forever. 00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:36.240 God continues his covenant with King David, saying that it will last forever. 00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:44.480 King David reigned from 1010 BC to 970 BC, a long time before Jeremiah. 00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:54.960 And Jeremiah is pointing back hundreds of years, generations ago, that don't forget the promise that's coming. 00:16:54.960 --> 00:17:01.279 Something is coming, an everlasting deterral that is changing everything. 00:17:01.279 --> 00:17:13.839 Probably arguably the most popular and one of the greatest kings of Israel that we understand in the Bible. 00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:21.839 Though sinful, all in the nature, God tells us, scripture tells us, he's a man after Nazareth. 00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:25.440 Well, we know David anoints Solomon. 00:17:25.440 --> 00:17:27.440 David personally does not reign. 00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:30.079 His throne does not last forever. 00:17:30.079 --> 00:17:31.839 David does an off throne. 00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:37.119 He anoints Solomon in 970 BC, king of Israel. 00:17:37.119 --> 00:17:38.559 Then David dies. 00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:42.240 David's personal kingship fails to last forever. 00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:46.640 Solomon, a wise and dead king, had his heart turned. 00:17:46.640 --> 00:17:47.519 Yeah. 00:17:47.519 --> 00:17:49.279 He disobeyed the Lord. 00:17:49.279 --> 00:17:52.400 He gave his heart over to the idols of his foreign lines. 00:17:52.400 --> 00:17:58.319 He did not shepherd in righteousness and could not execute justice. 00:17:58.319 --> 00:18:03.039 Solomon reigns. 00:18:03.039 --> 00:18:05.279 It was after Solomon's reign. 00:18:05.279 --> 00:18:12.160 The Israel splits in two, the northern ten tribes of Israel and the southern Judah, containing two tribes. 00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:17.599 And that brings us to at least a this structure that we understand that Jeremiah is. 00:18:17.599 --> 00:18:21.680 Jeremiah living in Shuddah. 00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:26.799 And that's what that's who the people specifically that he's talking to. 00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:29.359 That's the important of the covenant. 00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:35.839 It is speaking, it is drawing, it is teaching the people to something to while he was sitting before the Lord. 00:18:35.839 --> 00:18:53.359 At least one last five kings were no exception to, let's say, not being able to keep the covenant that the Lord had commanded at all times. 00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:29.200 Josiah, the first king, he was actually a really good king. 00:19:29.200 --> 00:19:32.400 The Lord commends him extremely well. 00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:36.480 But he still suffers from the Baalflah, the sinful nature. 00:19:36.480 --> 00:19:47.279 Jehoaz, the son of Josiah, who ruled for three months and then was deposed by Egyptian Pharaoh and taken to Egypt where he died. 00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:50.480 He actually predicts this in Jeremiah 22. 00:19:50.480 --> 00:20:04.799 It says of him, Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing, and does not give him his waities. 00:20:04.799 --> 00:20:08.160 We see the pattern here. 00:20:08.160 --> 00:20:52.960 And the last king, Zedekiah. 00:20:52.960 --> 00:21:05.599 His reign is often reviewed as a period of missed opportunities and tragic decisions, his failure to keep prophetic glories and his reliance on political alliances other than faithfulness to tell. 00:21:05.599 --> 00:21:11.519 Only they would have had a no king's protest. 00:21:11.519 --> 00:21:35.119 Maybe they needed all these poor shepherds and bad kings to see the true light. 00:21:35.119 --> 00:21:42.559 So Jeremiah, looking at it in a declining kingdom, kings and leaders and people falling away from the Lord. 00:21:42.559 --> 00:21:44.480 He references the shepherds. 00:21:44.480 --> 00:21:46.240 Woe to you. 00:21:46.240 --> 00:21:54.319 The Lord takes this seriously, those who leave after, and leads people into unrighteousness and injustice. 00:21:54.319 --> 00:21:56.640 So what can we learn? 00:21:56.640 --> 00:21:59.599 Jeremiah saw good kings and bad kings. 00:21:59.599 --> 00:22:03.440 Some the Lord commended, and others he detested. 00:22:03.440 --> 00:22:05.920 Yet all sinful and fallen. 00:22:05.920 --> 00:22:15.920 Jeremiah's priority was repentance and calling all to walk in righteousness, calling in who God was, the righteous king. 00:22:15.920 --> 00:22:20.079 So his prophetic ministry called people to sanctification. 00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:22.079 It's truly what it was. 00:22:22.079 --> 00:22:29.920 A quote from John Piper that I like it the study of prophecy does not produce sanctification, it is being studied wrong. 00:22:29.920 --> 00:22:41.599 If gazing into the future hinders our responsiveness to present needs, we may be sure that we are not gazing with the eyes of God. 00:22:41.599 --> 00:23:04.960 Jeremiah pointed to the one final solution and ultimate hope of fallen man, of fallen shepherds, of fallen kings. 00:23:04.960 --> 00:23:08.559 The
