Ezekiel, I want to give a brief little history, little background of the prophet Ezekiel. 00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:57.680 For those of you, I'm sure probably just about everybody in this room knows about the prophet Ezekiel. 00:05:57.680 --> 00:05:59.600 So this will just be a recap. 00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:10.639 But Ezekiel obviously was a priest, a prophet, during a very interesting time, a crazy time for the Israelites, for the people, for God's people. 00:06:10.639 --> 00:06:17.199 In fact, they were a large group of the Israelites living in exile. 00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:22.399 They were taken from Jerusalem and brought to Babylon. 00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:27.279 And so Ezekiel was one of those, one of those living in exile. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:35.680 And he was given a very specific task from the Lord, actually, too, if you will, as far as the prophetic ministry goes. 00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:41.600 It was first a word of judgment over God's people. 00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:46.079 It was a word, it was very, very tough. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:52.959 And then it flips, and it's a word of encouragement, of hope, of restoration. 00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:54.879 And we'll get through there. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:08.079 And now Ezekiel, God gives Ezekiel many, many different ways of communicating the message that God is trying to say to his people. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:11.839 And it's a very unique, very dramatic way. 00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:14.720 Ezekiel gets many visions. 00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:20.240 He gets many visions, powerful, dramatic, very detailed visions. 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:27.120 He gets told to do some kind of outlandish things, honestly. 00:07:27.120 --> 00:07:47.040 For example, the first thing he gets told to do is build a city out of bricks, like a model city, and to represent the siege that was going to happen from the surrounding enemy cities of Jerusalem, that they were going to come in and destroy Jerusalem and capture God's people. 00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:52.480 He was told to lay on his side for 390 days. 00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:54.959 390 days. 00:07:54.959 --> 00:07:59.040 And then again on the other side for 40. 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:10.079 And this represents the amount of years, the time frame of God's people and their disobedience and time stepping away from the Lord. 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:25.680 He was told that he was going to have to make his bread out of a mixture, a combination of different grains and things that wouldn't have tasted good, and eat in very small rations. 00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:32.720 And this represented the types of food that the Israelites were going to be eating in exile from these enemy cities. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:46.879 And then also the small portions represented the famine that was going to be coming during this time of exile, the time where the Israelites were in Babylon. 00:08:46.879 --> 00:08:50.799 And he was told to cook his food a certain way. 00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:55.039 Some of you are chuckling because you know exactly what I'm talking about. 00:08:55.039 --> 00:09:02.480 God told Ezekiel, I want you to make your food, I want you to cook it over human dung. 00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:04.480 Hold the phone. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.679 Human feces. 00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:13.440 Okay. 00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:15.519 And he's like, okay, tie me up. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:16.720 I gotta lay on my side. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:17.519 That's fine. 00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:18.240 No big deal. 00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:20.960 Make a model city, no big deal, that's fine. 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:27.519 And then when he said, You're gonna make your food over human feces, Ezekiel says, Hold the phone, God. 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:29.039 He actually speaks up here. 00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:30.799 All the other stuff, he stays quiet. 00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:31.600 He speaks up. 00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:32.799 And he's like, wait a minute. 00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:35.279 Now I haven't defiled myself ever. 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:38.559 Anything and everything that's ever gone into me has been clean. 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:40.879 I've kept your word, I've kept your law. 00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:43.120 Why do you got to do this to me? 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:44.799 And God says, okay, fine. 00:09:44.799 --> 00:09:46.960 We'll make it cow dung. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:50.480 You know, I mean, I guess that's better, right? 00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:50.960 Okay. 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:54.720 So anyway, so he's got to cook this over cow dung, right? 00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:00.080 Another thing that God told Ezekiel that he was going to have to do was shave his head. 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:03.600 And rem remember, Ezekiel's a priest, a prophet at this time. 00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:06.559 Prophets didn't, priests didn't shave. 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:08.399 That was a no-no. 00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:11.039 And God's telling him, You're gonna you're gonna shave your head. 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:14.879 And I want you to take a third of your hair, and I want you to chop it up with a sword. 00:10:14.879 --> 00:10:18.480 And you're gonna take another third and it's gonna be thrown into the fire. 00:10:18.480 --> 00:10:22.000 And I want you to take another third and let it be scattered in the wind. 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:26.000 And I want you to take the final third and I want you to put it in your belt. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:33.440 And that was to represent that a third being chopped up, that some of God's people were gonna die by the sword. 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:37.120 And some were gonna die by the fire. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:39.919 And some were just gonna be scattered. 00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:44.320 But the some that you're kind of talking about, that's a remnant. 00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:46.480 Those are my people. 00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:55.039 After all the destruction, after all the chaos, after all the crazy, I'm still, they're still gonna be my people. 00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:59.360 And of course, Ezekiel had tons of visions, right? 00:10:59.360 --> 00:11:00.639 These were physical acts. 00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:08.799 These were almost like, if you will, I don't want to degrade this because this came from God to Ezekiel, what he was supposed to do, but it's almost like street theater, right? 00:11:08.799 --> 00:11:11.519 These are the things that he had him literally act out. 00:11:11.519 --> 00:11:12.720 And there's there's many more. 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:17.039 And I want to encourage you to get into the book of Ezekiel yourself and read this. 00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:21.679 It's really good because frankly, we just don't have time to go through every little thing tonight. 00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:35.279 But some of the visions, the very first, right off the bat in chapter one, it starts off with a vision that God gives Ezekiel, and it's the temple in Jerusalem. 00:11:35.279 --> 00:11:51.440 And in fact, it's this amazing, beautiful image, and Ezekiel describes it so beautifully, and it's like a human-like figure, not a human, but human-like, and just beautiful, gleaming with like a belt of fire. 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:57.440 And he's sitting on a throne, and the throne is held up by these magnificent creatures. 00:11:57.440 --> 00:12:03.279 I mean, just there's four of them, four angels, okay? 00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:09.919 And they've got several sets of wings, two stretching out, touching each other, two to cover their body. 00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:18.159 And they had four faces, one like a human, one like a lion, one like an eagle, and then an ox. 00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:21.600 And there were wheels on the sides of these angels. 00:12:21.600 --> 00:12:28.000 And I'm just so you know, I'm paraphrasing, this is this is like this book condensed, just so you I'm sure you all know that already. 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:41.919 But again, there's these wheels, and and Ezekiel explains these wheels as wheels within wheels, and on the wheels there were eyes, and wherever the spirit went, they went. 00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:46.399 And this was some would say like a chariot, okay? 00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:55.519 So we've got these four wheels, these four figures carrying this throne, and Ezekiel sees it leaving the temple, leaving Jerusalem. 00:12:55.519 --> 00:13:01.039 And that was obviously God's presence leaving Jerusalem. 00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:02.240 Leaving. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:10.320 God had had enough of Jerusalem, of his people turning their back on him. 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:21.039 He had had enough of the idolatry, he had had enough again of them just blatantly turning their back. 00:13:21.039 --> 00:13:28.080 And Ezekiel, we can break this down into three parts, as I already began. 00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:33.200 The first part, judgment on Israel, and that's chapters four through twenty four. 00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:37.200 And then the second part is judgment on the surrounding nations. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:40.480 That's chapters 25 through 32. 00:13:40.480 --> 00:13:45.600 And then finally, the third part is hope and restoration. 00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:47.759 Hope and restoration. 00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:51.519 This is heavy, it starts off heavy, but it gets better. 00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:52.720 I promise. 00:13:52.720 --> 00:13:53.919 I promise. 00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:59.279 So Ezekiel has these visions and they're powerful, and there's more to it again. 00:13:59.279 --> 00:14:01.200 I'm just I'm just paraphrasing. 00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:04.879 But he has these visions and he sees God leaving. 00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:10.159 And at first he's kind of confused, but then it comes to him later that okay, God has left. 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:15.120 His presence, his glory has left the temple. 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:16.799 So what now? 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:22.960 The people of Israel living in exile, God is telling Ezekiel, I need you to tell them these things. 00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:31.840 I need you to tell them about the doom that's coming, about the judgment that's coming, about my wrath, because I'm thoroughly ticked off. 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:34.080 Thoroughly. 00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:36.399 And I need you to tell them, and guess what? 00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:38.320 They're not gonna listen to you. 00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:43.200 It's kind of like the call we have as parents. 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:48.000 Hey, you got these little humans, and I need you to tell them things, and guess what? 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:48.879 They're not gonna listen to you. 00:14:48.879 --> 00:14:50.399 Anyways, sorry, bad joke. 00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:53.200 But I love my kids, I really do, they're amazing. 00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:59.279 But regardless, they're not gonna listen to you, Ezekiel, because they didn't listen to me. 00:14:59.279 --> 00:15:02.399 And they haven't for quite some time now. 00:15:02.399 --> 00:15:06.399 And it's time, it's time for judgment. 00:15:06.399 --> 00:15:08.480 It's time for judgment. 00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:13.360 And so, Ezekiel, of course, he goes and he does all of these things. 00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:27.039 He's obedient, he follows the Lord's instructions, he does exactly verbatim what the Lord tells him to do, and of course, of course, Israel doesn't listen. 00:15:27.039 --> 00:15:32.879 While there are some living in Babylon, there were still some Israelites living in Jerusalem. 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:40.000 And during the time that they were there, they were continuing to live in sin. 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:45.120 Continue, they brought idols into the temple courthouse, into the courtyard. 00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:48.399 They brought it as far as into the temple itself. 00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:50.720 I mean, what a mockery. 00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:53.679 God won't be mocked. 00:15:53.679 --> 00:16:06.399 The Bible tells us that they brought these idols in to God's holy place, his temple, where he chose to set up and dwell, to tabernacle with his people. 00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:11.759 And they brought in these foreign gods, these foreign idols. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:13.679 So God had had enough. 00:16:13.679 --> 00:16:17.279 But again, like I said, that's that's not where it ends. 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:18.480 That's not where it ends. 00:16:18.480 --> 00:16:20.720 It doesn't end in just doom and gloom and judgment. 00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:29.279 Now, about 25 years into the exile, sure enough, the Babylonians come back, they attack the city, and they destroy the temple. 00:16:29.279 --> 00:16:34.799 The temple is completely decimated, brought, just leveled, done, no more temple. 00:16:34.799 --> 00:16:44.480 And you could just imagine how God's people felt completely alone, forsaken, broken. 00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:48.639 God gives Ezekiel a vision. 00:16:48.639 --> 00:17:00.879 He takes him to this valley, and it's a bunch of dry bones, just a dry, desolate place, desert-like, and nothing but bones, just scattered. 00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:05.440 And he says, Ezekiel, can these bones live? 00:17:05.440 --> 00:17:11.599 I love Ezekiel's answer because he's you know God. 00:17:11.599 --> 00:17:14.960 Because you say no, God's gonna be like, oh yeah? 00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:17.039 Or if you say yes, he'll be like, oh yeah. 00:17:17.039 --> 00:17:18.960 So he just says, You know, you know God. 00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:19.839 You know the answer. 00:17:19.839 --> 00:17:20.960 Why you know? 00:17:20.960 --> 00:17:24.480 It's like Ezekiel, I want you to speak to these bones. 00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:27.119 I want you to speak to these dry bones. 00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:37.359 And sure enough, Ezekiel speaks the words of the Lord over those bones, and they start to move, and they start to shake, and they start to assemble. 00:17:37.359 --> 00:17:45.680 And God told him, You're gonna see muscle, and you're gonna see skin, and you're gonna see flesh, and you're gonna see those dry bones come back to life. 00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:51.039 And so Ezekiel is obedient and he speaks, and those bones start to come back to life. 00:17:51.039 --> 00:17:58.720 But now they're just kind of standing there, these almost zombie-like, just just bag of bones, just flesh and bones, standing there. 00:17:58.720 --> 00:18:00.880 And God says, I need you to speak to them. 00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:08.559 The breath, that same breath that I breathed into Adam and Eve in the garden, that breath of life. 00:18:08.559 --> 00:18:11.279 Speak that over them. 00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:22.720 And so he does, and sure enough, what was once dead, dry, desolate bones is now an army, ready for battle. 00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:29.200 And that's just a beautiful, beautiful picture of what God is doing this this whole time. 00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:33.440 It's these people who had turned their back on the Lord. 00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:37.119 Mind you, they turned their back, he never turned his. 00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:40.640 I think that's super important that we we grasp that. 00:18:40.640 --> 00:18:45.519 They turned their back, he never, he never turned his back on them. 00:18:45.519 --> 00:18:50.400 And he gave them warning after warning after warning, and 00:19:32.720 Ezekiel has another vision, and this time, this time, it's of a new temple, and it's beautiful, and it's built, and he sees that same vision of that image, that person, that human-like thing on a throne coming back this time to the temple. 00:19:32.720 --> 00:19:37.200 And he comes back and he makes his home and he dwells there in the temple. 00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:40.000 And it
