wise man who built his house on the rock. 00:00:30.960 --> 00:00:37.679 And so one of the things that we're wanting to do is to give us uh a solid foundation for growing in Christ. 00:00:37.679 --> 00:00:45.200 And so this is an important series of studies, and there's ten lessons, and uh we're just excited to bring them to you. 00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:52.479 I'm working and uh teaching with uh Pastor Mark Medley, and I'm gonna do the first two sessions and he'll pick up the third one. 00:00:52.479 --> 00:01:04.799 So tonight we're looking uh, because I'm doing it this in the in the evening, uh, we're looking at the session one, which is having to do with what is God like, and uh the other one is related to it. 00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:10.719 And these are bas basically uh the the we say the two most important questions you could ever ask. 00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:16.560 You know, if you ask the right questions, it can give you access to uh greater things in God. 00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:25.519 And so the two most important questions I could ever think of, and uh anyone could ask, is what is God like and what does he think about me? 00:01:25.519 --> 00:01:29.760 And these reflect really the idea behind the great commandments. 00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:36.079 Uh the great commandment, number one, uh you shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only. 00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:41.359 And number two, uh the second commandment is like the first one, uh love your neighbor as yourself. 00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:43.359 So loving God and loving your neighbor. 00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:46.239 And these two questions reflect both those ideas. 00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:49.840 So tonight we're gonna look first of all at what is God like. 00:01:49.840 --> 00:02:02.480 And uh we're gonna see in this first session that God's revelation of himself, that is, his nature and character, means something really important, and that is that he is a God that we can know. 00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:06.319 And uh we're all wanting to pursue that idea. 00:02:06.319 --> 00:02:13.680 If you're a believer that's uh that's really following Christ, you do want to know God better and better, and so these are these are important truths. 00:02:13.680 --> 00:02:20.479 So let's begin by looking at a couple of things, how God reveals himself to us, and he does that in two ways. 00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:27.120 The first one is called general revelation, that's your first blank that you have on your notebook. 00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:33.120 This is uh when we talk about general revelation, what can be known about God through creation. 00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:42.240 The Bible says in Psalm 19, verse 1, the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:55.680 So when we look at the creation and we look out at, for example, the stars or the moon or the mountain mountains we go to see the mountains, we see the grandeur and glory and beauty of God. 00:02:55.680 --> 00:03:01.360 And we can know when we look at that that it reflects a designer, a master designer. 00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:10.479 When God created it, he did it for his glory, and we can see something of that glory in creation, and we can also see something about the nature of God. 00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:12.639 This is called general revelation. 00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:17.759 Revelation uh, I mean Romans 1, 19 and 20 uh speaks about this. 00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:21.120 It says, For what can be known about God is plain to them. 00:03:21.120 --> 00:03:38.080 That is, he's talking about plain to people, and because God has shown it to them, for his invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world in the things that have been made. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:39.759 So they are without excuse. 00:03:39.759 --> 00:03:51.439 And his point there is that this created order is able to be looked at, and we can know that there is something about God's nature that is revealed in the creation. 00:03:51.439 --> 00:03:55.280 And it's called general revelation because everybody can see this. 00:03:55.280 --> 00:04:04.879 Everyone who is lived and is living can know that God created something, and when we look at that, we can see that God was behind it. 00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:20.079 God reveals Himself then through nature, but because we can't fully comprehend the message of creation, or we maybe sometimes refuse the truths that it reveals, which is further on in Romans chapter one, what do we need? 00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:21.439 We need something else. 00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:26.399 There's general revelation, and there's second kind of revelation, which is called special revelation. 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:32.879 This is what can be known about God through the word of God, that is both living and written. 00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:45.279 The living word of God is Jesus Christ, and we can know through special revelation, through the person of Jesus, we can know God, and then we can also know God through his written word, the Bible. 00:04:45.279 --> 00:04:58.319 Matthew 11, verse 27 says, No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. 00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:05.439 So God the Father can reveal through His Son what He is like, and we're going to see that. 00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:09.600 Jesus, the living Word of God, is the ultimate revelation of God. 00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:13.040 Without Christ, we could not know God at all. 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:28.800 We might be able to see some of the attributes of His nature and things of that kind of information through the created world, but we can't really know God in detail or intimately in fellowship without Jesus Christ. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:34.720 So our goal in knowing God is not simply to learn facts about him, but to know him as a person. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:38.720 You can know a lot about God, but you can still not know God personally. 00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:43.759 So Jeremiah 9, 23, 24 reflects this idea. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:06:06.240 It says, Thus says the Lord, let not the wise men boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boasts in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, declares the Lord. 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:14.160 So we see in that that we can know God both through God's creation and through this person, Jesus Christ. 00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:20.480 Let's begin now to look at how God's nature is uh taught to us and is shown to us. 00:06:20.480 --> 00:06:26.319 And so in order to talk about God, we need to see these in terms of two categories, I would say. 00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:36.000 Number one is God's what we could call his essence, and his essence are those things that that we don't or cannot share in common with him. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.079 They're unique to God. 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:43.040 Uh some theologians call these incommunicable attributes of God. 00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:48.240 That is, it's a, for example, God is unchangeable, but we do change. 00:06:48.240 --> 00:06:56.240 You know, I can change my uh my happy or sad uh emotion and depending on the circumstances sometimes. 00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:58.639 But God is always consistent. 00:06:58.639 --> 00:07:00.800 He is who he is all the time. 00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:01.839 That's his essence. 00:07:01.839 --> 00:07:07.120 And then there's a second thing we can see this uh reflected through is God's character or divine attributes. 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:14.639 We're gonna look at both of these, but these are the things that we can know experientially and in which we can become like him. 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:18.000 They're called, therefore, communicable attributes. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.680 God, for example, is wise, we can be wise. 00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:25.360 God is uh joyful, we can be joyful. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:28.319 God is generous, we can be generous. 00:07:28.319 --> 00:07:34.720 God is kind, God is good, and all those things that God is that are communicable attributes that we can imitate. 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:42.160 So let's look at each of these, these ideas of God's essence and God's character, and see what God is saying about Himself. 00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:48.560 Most often these insights into the nature of God are stated in the form of God is in the Bible. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:50.720 And so we're gonna do that that way. 00:07:50.720 --> 00:07:54.560 First, his essence, or what we call his being. 00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:57.040 These are remember are unique to God. 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:02.399 And the first of these that God is self-existent and eternal eternal. 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:04.800 God is self-existent and eternal. 00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:10.000 Both of these ideas describe what theologians call God's a seety. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.560 And let me spell that for you. 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:22.240 It's a-s-e-i-t-y, and it's defined kind of like this, that God is whatever he is by his own self or of his own self. 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:28.160 There's no one or thing that basically helps God be who he is. 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:31.439 He is this himself, in his self and of himself. 00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:34.480 Acts 17, 24, and 25 reflects this. 00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:39.840 Therefore it says, the one whom you worship without knowing, him I proclaim to you. 00:08:39.840 --> 00:09:05.759 And there pause right there just a second, because Paul is talking to a group of people who worshiped multitudes of gods, and he's gonna tell them that there is really the God, and he says, he goes on, he says, God who made the world and everything in it, since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands, nor is he worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything. 00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:07.039 And that's the key phrase. 00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:14.080 God doesn't need anything or anyone, since he gives life to all, Paul says, breath and all things. 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:19.360 So this is his self existence, and it means that he exists independent of man. 00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:23.120 So what makes different God different from people? 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:34.080 Things like even or things like what he created, what makes God different from the stars or from earthquakes or from any other created thing? 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:38.799 See, there's a belief that God is existing inside the created thing. 00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:41.440 No, God is above the things he created. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:44.480 He's not in nature, he is above nature. 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:46.960 So no one made him or caused him. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:55.840 He exists in and of himself, and so he owes his being to nothing outside of himself, and he has the power of being within himself. 00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:01.039 So he affirms his truth about himself in Exodus 3, verse 14. 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:10.559 And God said to Moses there, and it's sort of a statement of uh continuing existence, but it has no reference to time. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:14.799 So God said to Moses, I am who I am. 00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:20.720 And he said, This, say to this to the people of Israel, I am has sent you. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:33.200 And God's point there is that he is uh self-existent, he's existed in terms of his eternality, which means that it it in relation to time, he's always existed. 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:42.639 He himself was never created, and he never came into being, which is kind of an unfathomable thought, but he's always existed and he always will. 00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:43.600 There's no end to God. 00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:46.000 He has no beginning, he has no end. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:57.679 And in fact, we look back and see uh John 1 verse 1 says, in the beginning, God, it starts that sentence out that way, because in the beginning God was there, he already existed. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:14.080 In fact, God is not frustrated like we are when we think about time, because he created time, he's not frustrated by it, but he kind of structures the whole of history, the whole of history of the whole world to accomplish his purposes in time. 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:18.879 So he's outside of time and he orders time, but he's not subject to time. 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:20.720 Time is a creation of God. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:23.200 He exists, as I said, outside and above it. 00:11:23.200 --> 00:11:27.919 In fact, he is Lord over time and he actually sets its boundaries. 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:31.120 He knows when things are gonna start and when they're gonna stop. 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:34.399 And he knows that for us in a personal way as well. 00:11:34.399 --> 00:11:37.200 He knows our beginning and he knows our end. 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:38.720 So that's the first thing. 00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:44.159 This is speaking about God's his uh eternality and his self-existence. 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:45.440 That's the first thing. 00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:47.679 And then let's look at the second one. 00:11:47.679 --> 00:11:48.720 God is one. 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:56.559 This is another another uh attribute of God that he is uh he's we can't imitate. 00:11:56.559 --> 00:11:58.639 It's uh noncommunicable. 00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:04.799 So he says in Deuteronomy 6, verse 4, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:10.559 This is a basic statement about God's nature, and this tells us true truths about God. 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:15.600 The first is that he is one in the sense that there is no other God. 00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:26.399 You might call a God uh a lot of people do call God by that name in the uh s in certain religions, but they're not really gods, they're false gods. 00:12:26.399 --> 00:12:33.360 There's only one true God, and that is God Himself, the one who made heaven and earth, the one who created everything. 00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:41.120 So there's that sense that He there is no other God, He's the only one, and then there's one He's one in the sense that this is His essence. 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:43.919 In other words, He is a unity. 00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:46.879 And uh this is this is His oneness. 00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:55.519 God, this kind of relates to the second thing, the third, I guess the third thing that we're talking about actually, is God is a triune being. 00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:58.559 And maybe you've heard of the term Trinity. 00:12:58.559 --> 00:13:19.279 Uh and so if we hold that idea that we just talked about in number two, God is one, and then we go to this point, number three, God is a trinity or a triune being, it sort of messes with our mind, it forms a contradiction in the way we think, because how can those both uh be held be true at the same time? 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:25.120 Yet the scriptures clearly teach that God is both one and he's also a trinity. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:29.679 And we're gonna look at that here in just a second, because it's uh it doesn't make sense to us. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:35.600 But the scriptures clearly teach that God is one, that there is one God revealed as what? 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:40.559 God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. 00:13:40.559 --> 00:13:45.200 And so you hear those three aspects there of who God is. 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:56.320 In fact, we see it reflected at the very beginning in Genesis chapter one, verse twenty-six, when God said, Let us, and you might circle that word us there. 00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:07.440 It means more than one, let us make man in our image according to and circle the word our is a more than one pronoun. 00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:19.200 According to our likeness, let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 00:14:19.200 --> 00:14:30.559 So at God at creation, he even reflects this idea that there is something that is plural, the plurality of God reflected even at the creation. 00:14:30.559 --> 00:14:32.799 So let's look at these three aspects here. 00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:39.679 First is God the Father, and in John 4 23, this idea is reflected in that verse. 00:14:39.679 --> 00:14:47.919 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father, there's the Word, in spirit and truth. 00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:52.480 For they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 00:14:52.480 --> 00:14:54.799 So here we see the Fatherhood of God. 00:14:54.799 --> 00:15:04.159 God reveals Himself not only as a powerful and sovereign God, but uniquely, and this is important to see this, as a loving and approachable Father. 00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:11.039 And for some of us, uh, you know, I had a really good dad, but uh, many people didn't have that experience. 00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:19.039 And so when you think about God the Father, sometimes your perception of him is not what we see reflected in the scriptures. 00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:28.080 And so this is why we we need to learn who God is, because it can change the way we think about uh reality and how God is who he says he is. 00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:31.600 So there's God the Father, and then there is God the Son. 00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:41.679 In John 1, 14, it says in the beginning, it's actually 1 and verse 14, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:15:41.679 --> 00:15:43.039 Who's who's the Word here? 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:44.799 He's talking about Jesus. 00:15:44.799 --> 00:15:47.039 It says he was in the beginning with God. 00:15:47.039 --> 00:16:05.840 What a fascinating thought that Jesus existed because he's God at the very beginning, and yet it says the word in verse 14 became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten, of the Father, full of grace and truth. 00:16:05.840 --> 00:16:17.279 So this really talks about his preexistence, but is also talking about his existence as he became human and he became a man. 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:20.159 So that's pretty amazing, really. 00:16:20.159 --> 00:16:24.080 Jesus was the expression then of God in the earth. 00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:32.720 The Word took on flesh, and the Bible says he lived among us, and he was fully God, and he was also fully man. 00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:36.240 So in theological terms, this is called the incarnation. 00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:44.480 Incarnation reflecting this idea of carnation of uh flesh, the flesh, he's fleshly, he's he's human. 00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:50.480 And so we have God the Father, we have God the Son, and then the third aspect of God is God the Holy Spirit. 00:16:50.480 --> 00:17:00.559 John 5, verse 7 says, For there are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, that is Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 00:17:00.559 --> 00:17:13.359 This is a really clear statement about the that sort of reflects this idea that there is a Trinity idea in the Scriptures, and the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. 00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:16.720 He uh He does things and continues to do them. 00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:21.039 He inspired the Scriptures, He convicts the world of sin. 00:17:21.039 --> 00:17:26.000 Uh He empowers us as Christians to live a godly life. 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:37.440 And the Bible talks about when Jesus went to be with the Father, before he went to be with the Father, he said, I'm going to send you a helper, the comforter, who is going to lead you into all the truth. 00:17:37.440 --> 00:17:40.160 And so this is the Holy Spirit. 00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:43.839 So then, if the Lord is one, let's think about this. 00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:46.640 How are we supposed to understand the Trinity? 00:17:46.640 --> 00:17:53.759 Many people have tried to come up with human analogies to help us understand and explain this reality. 00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:56.319 And let me give you some examples of these. 00:17:56.319 --> 00:18:00.559 These are sort of limited, but they are interesting in a way. 00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:06.960 So we think of different ways to speak of the Trinity, and people have done this for a while since the earliest part of Christianity. 00:18:06.960 --> 00:18:09.920 Different forms of water, for example. 00:18:09.920 --> 00:18:15.119 There's liquid steam, and then there's ice, for example. 00:18:15.119 --> 00:18:20.400 Or an egg, the three parts of an egg, the yolk, the shell, and then the liquid part inside. 00:18:20.400 --> 00:18:25.759 A three-leaf clover, or a man who is a husband, a father, and a son. 00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:27.759 And so those are those are pretty interesting. 00:18:27.759 --> 00:18:36.799 But in somewhat a limited way, a helpful to kind of get the idea, but all of these really fall short of who God really is. 00:18:36.799 --> 00:18:42.480 And this has been something that's been studied, as I said, for a long time, since the earliest part of Christianity. 00:18:42.480 --> 00:19:00.000 But it did come to a point where they did land on in one of the councils in the early early church this idea that God, when we're talking about God in three persons, here's what they basically stated, and this is how we think of God and the Trinity and yet being one. 00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:01.839 He is three in one. 00:19:01.839 --> 00:19:08.319 That is, and what it means is three persons, one essence. 00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:10.000 Three persons, one essence. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.480 And you might circle that phrase because it's it's a critical idea in Christian theology. 00:19:14.480 --> 00:19:18.319 But I've given you a little diagram here that kind of reflects this. 00:19:18.319 --> 00:19:26.400 And you see the Father in the circles, the Father, the Holy Spirit, the Son on the outside circles, and then they're all God. 00:19:26.400 --> 00:19:27.759 That's in the center section. 00:19:27.759 --> 00:19:30.799 All of these, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit is God. 00:19:30.799 --> 00:19:35.440 Yet in the black, the Son is not the Father. 00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:36.720 They're distinct. 00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:40.240 The Father is not the Holy Spirit, they're distinct. 00:19:40.240 --> 00:19:42.400 The Son is not the Holy Spirit. 00:19:42.400 --> 00:19:47.200 All of these are distinct, and they have different different and distinct roles within the Godhead. 00:19:47.200 --> 00:19:54.480 So we think of this: God exists in three persons sharing one essence or nature. 00:19:54.480 --> 00:19:57.200 The three persons define what? 00:19:57.200 --> 00:20:03.119 They define who God is, while the one essence defines what God is. 00:20:03.119 --> 00:20:04.720 Think about that. 00:20:04.720 --> 00:20:06.960 So again, the Trinity is a great mystery. 00:20:06.960 --> 00:20:18.319 I don't think anyone could say they they completely understand this, but we can hold these truths in our in our thinking because God says it in His Word, and we can clearly see it. 00:20:18.319 --> 00:20:22.480 It's a great mystery, and we can understand it with our natural mind. 00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:23.920 But it's there, the truth is there. 00:20:23.920 --> 00:20:28.880 The word Trinity, in fact, is not even found in the Bible, but the idea is certainly there. 00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:32.640 So from the beginning, this plurality of God was revealed. 00:20:32.640 --> 00:20:39.599 And so this is the this is this uh idea here of just God being a triune being. 00:20:39.599 --> 00:20:40.720 That's a third point. 00:20:40.720 --> 00:20:44.400 Let's go on to number four and let's look at it. 00:20:44.400 --> 00:20:50.960 Number four says God is is holy, which sort of he you think of it like this, he is holy other. 00:20:50.960 --> 00:20:52.400 He's not like me. 00:20:52.400 --> 00:20:59.680 I'm human, I'm limited, I'm of the earth, God is of heaven, he is uh he's not bound by anything. 00:20:59.680 --> 00:21:04.559 So when we look at this, we see a good verse for this in 1 Peter 15, 16. 00:21:04.559 --> 00:21:15.119 It says, E, as he has called you, he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy. 00:21:15.119 --> 00:21:20.480 That idea holy simply means separate and up and set apart. 00:21:20.480 --> 00:21:24.400 God is separate and distinct because why? 00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:27.519 He is without sin and he is perfect. 00:21:27.519 --> 00:21:30.000 We can't say that we're without sin. 00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:31.839 We can't say that we're perfect. 00:21:31.839 --> 00:21:42.720 And so God Himself, He is devoted to His holiness, He's devoted to His own glory and honor, which is reflected in this idea that He is perfect and holy. 00:21:42.720 --> He's a Holy Spirit, but here it's saying that God in His nature is a spirit. 00:21:59.519 --> 00:22:08.559 In John 4.24, it says God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. 00:22:08.559 --> 00:22:11.839 And so this idea is that he is a spiritual being. 00:22:11.839 --> 00:22:12.960 That's the point. 00:22:12.960 --> 00:22:19.680 And because he is a spiritual being, we can connect with him because we have a spirit, and he's created us to know him. 00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:24.720 We can have fellowship with him because we have a spirit, and our spirit and his theological term for God's knowledge, I would call it superabundant, uh miraculous knowledge, is a word called omniscience. 00:23:13.839 --> 00:23:15.680 And let me spell that for you. 00:23:15.680 00:24:43.039 There's not anything he cannot do. 00:24:43.039 --> 00:24:45.359 He has all the power to make things happen. 00:24:45.359 --> 00:24:46.799 He controls everything. 00:24:46.799 --> 00:24:53.200 So the theologians call this and this a similar word, omni omnipotence, omnipotence. 00:24:53.200 --> 00:24:57.359 It looks like omnipotence, but it's omnipotence. 00:24:57.359 --> 00:25:08.880 And God's power here is seen through the scriptures, and we see it all through the scriptures from the beginning when he created uh something out of nothing at the beginning. 00:25:08.880 --> 00:25:21.200 And his examples of leading the, for example, the children of Israel uh out of Egypt and crossing the Red Sea and delivering them from the Egyptians. 00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:32.880 We see it in the our incarnation of Christ when God actually became a man and he sent him to help us to understand what he was like. 00:25:32.880 --> 00:25:35.680 He became a man through Jesus Christ. 00:25:35.680 --> 00:25:45.920 And then the redemption of man, how he took and he paid for our sins, and he was able to pay for his sins because he is all powerful and he is all holy and in all the Wouldn't it be silly to think that you and I could hide from God? 00:26:14.400 --> 00:26:20.960 Adam thought he could hide from God, but it was just uh, you know, something that he he didn't theological term for God's presence is similar to the other two we looked at. 00:26:55.440 --> 00:26:58.000 This one is omnipresent, omnipresent. 00:26:58.000 --> 00:27:02.000 It means that God is never separated from his creation. 00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:12.559 Not only is God present everywhere, even in space and in the universe, he is present here with us in personal relationship with He's with you now. 00:27:12.559 --> 00:27:15.599 He's with us now as we're going through this lesson. 00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:18.319 He is always with us everywhere. 00:27:18.319 --> 00:27:21.759 And so would call essential qualities of his character. 00:27:50.079 --> 00:27:52.160 And they're all positive. 00:27:52.160 --> 00:27:57.359 So here we find in Exodus 34 something that Moses asked God. 00:27:57.359 --> 00:28:01.680 He said, I want to see your glory, I want to see your glory. 00:28:01.680 --> 00:28:16.559 And God was amazingly gracious to Moses, and it says God put Moses, kind of hid him in the cleft of a rock, because the Bible teaches us that nobody, no, no man can see God and live. 00:28:16.559 --> 00:28:28.400 And so he kind of protects Moses from seeing his full-on person, and he lets him see sort of his his afterglow, his glory. 00:28:28.400 --> 00:28:56.559 And it says here in Exodus 34, 67, and the Lord passed before him and proclaimed as he's passing by, the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and fourth generation. 00:28:56.559 --> 00:29:07.920 And so what God is doing is he's passing by Moses, he's letting him hear see his afterglow, his glory, and letting him hear what God Himself was like. 00:29:07.920 --> 00:29:10.640 So this is how he desires to be known. 00:29:10.640 --> 00:29:20.319 And it's important to note at this point that these attributes of God are not, they're not just ways he chooses to act. 00:29:20.319 --> 00:29:29.519 He's not doing anything to pull one over on us, but he's showing us when we learn who God is, he's showing us who he is. 00:29:29.519 --> 00:29:34.000 This is not how he acts, but this is who he is in his nature. 00:29:34.000 --> 00:29:37.680 So he does not and he cannot act in any other way. 00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:42.799 This is important when we begin to doubt who God is in our life. 00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:48.559 And we can know that the doubts are not from the Lord because God is always the same. 00:29:48.559 --> 00:29:52.799 He's the same yesterday, today, yesterday, and forever, he says. 00:29:52.799 --> 00:29:56.319 So what are some of these attributes that we can imitate? 00:29:56.319 --> 00:30:06.640 Well, one of these is that God is good, he's compassionate, as we heard him tell Moses, he's gracious, he's slow to anger, he's merciful, he's faithful. 00:30:06.640 --> 00:30:11.599 We can imitate all of these things in reflecting the nature of God. 00:30:11.599 --> 00:30:20.799 God is not only good, he's merciful, he's forgiving, we can forgive people, we can be merciful to people, we can be like God in that way. 00:30:20.799 --> 00:30:23.200 Uh the Bible says God is love. 00:30:23.200 --> 00:30:27.200 God always gives himself to others for their good. 00:30:27.200 --> 00:30:31.359 And we all define, maybe have heard different definitions of what love is. 00:30:31.359 --> 00:30:35.920 Love is always doing what is best and choosing to do what's best for the other person. 00:30:35.920 --> 00:30:39.279 God acts that way toward uh towards us. 00:30:39.279 --> 00:30:44.079 He always does what is best for us because he loves us so much. 00:30:44.079 --> 00:30:48.160 In fact, 1 John 4, verse 8 says, God is love. 00:30:48.160 --> 00:30:54.720 This is the definition of love, is God, because he always is loving toward his creation. 00:30:54.720 --> 00:30:58.640 And so John 3.16 is a verse you might have heard. 00:30:58.640 --> 00:31:03.359 Um a lot of times we see it posted up there on and that stands at a football game. 00:31:03.359 --> 00:31:12.720 Maybe you've never read it, but it says, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. 00:31:12.720 --> 00:31:19.359 The b the greatest expression of God's love was sending his own son to die on the cross for our sins. 00:31:19.359 --> 00:31:23.279 He actually paid our penalty for the sins that we could not pay. 00:31:23.279 --> 00:31:26.960 We owed a debt to God, and God sent his son to pay that debt. 00:31:26.960 --> 00:31:32.799 So this is his greatest expression of love, to go to the cross and pay for our sins. 00:31:32.799 --> 00:31:34.400 What amazing God. 00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:36.559 God is uh also perfect. 00:31:36.559 --> 00:31:44.960 And uh who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. 00:32:02.559 --> 00:32:08.960 For he makes his son 00:32:35.279 So that perfection is reflected in how we behave and live. 00:32:35.279 --> 00:32:47.039 So God is trying to show us the love and perfection that he has in himself, and we're supposed to model that, and we can. 00:32:47.039 --> 00:32:50.240 So here's the next one: God is truthful. 00:32:50.240 --> 00:32:51.839 Uh He is truthful. 00:32:51.839 --> 00:32:55.119 He is truth because He's true in His essence. 00:32:55.119 --> 00:33:00.559 All His ways and words are truthful, and He is the final standard for truth. 00:33:00.559 --> 00:33:07.599 Uh, if you want to know what truth is, He has the standard for it because He is the one who defines truth. 00:33:07.599 --> 00:33:17.519 First John 5 20 it says, and we know that the Son of God is come and has given us understanding so that we know may know him who is true. 00:33:17.519 --> 00:33:24.319 And we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. 00:33:24.319 --> 00:33:27.839 This is the true God and eternal life. 00:33:27.839 --> 00:33:33.599 God is truthful, he always tells the truth, he doesn't lie, Hebrews 6, 18. 00:33:33.599 --> 00:33:36.880 It's impossible for God to lie, it says. 00:33:36.880 --> 00:33:46.640 That he should lie. 00:33:46.640 --> 00:33:54.400 He does not have a motivation to lie, because he always embodies truth, nor a son of man that he should repent. 00:33:54.400 --> 00:33:58.559 He doesn't have to ask for forgiveness for telling a lie because he never lies. 00:33:58.559 --> 00:34:01.279 Has he said and will he not do it? 00:34:01.279 --> 00:34:08.159 In other words, God says what he says, he means what he says, and what he says is is true always. 00:34:08.159 --> 00:34:11.039 Or has he spoken and will he not make it good? 00:34:11.039 --> 00:34:16.239 So you can depend on what God says because he's always a God of truth. 00:34:16.239 --> 00:34:19.519 And then this last one, God is righteous and just. 00:34:19.519 --> 00:34:23.519 The standard for what is right but resides in him. 00:34:23.519 --> 00:34:26.079 He always does what is right. 00:34:26.079 --> 00:34:41.519 You know, in the human sense, we always hear of different ways of different standards of what people say, well, it's right for me, or that's their truth, or this is uh the way that they think about justice. 00:34:41.519 --> 00:34:46.000 And so in this session, we've sort of just gotten a taste of what God is like. 00:34:46.000 --> 00:34:51.920 But here it says that God is true and just, he defines those things. 00:34:51.920 --> 00:34:57.280 So uh all these things that we've looked at, it's as I say, they're just a taste of what God is like. 00:34:57.280 --> 00:35:00.079 It kind of wets our appetite to knowing more. 00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:02.320 And so these are foundational truths. 00:35:02.320 --> 00:35:06.400 They are build, we build our lives on these realities. 00:35:06.400 --> 00:35:22.159 And just to say, because God is a it is an infinitely just amazing God, there's so much more to know about him than we know, than goes beyond these truths, and so much more to discover as we get to know him more. 00:35:22.159 --> 00:35:28.880 And so we see this actually reflected in the verse John 17, 3. 00:35:28.880 --> 00:35:37.519 It says, Now this is eternal life that you may know, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 00:35:37.519 --> 00:35:44.079 Eternal life means not just length of life, but the quality, this abundant life that we can all experience. 00:35:44.079 --> 00:35:45.440 And we can know it. 00:35:45.440 --> 00:35:51.840 We can know abundant and eternal life, this quality of life when we get to know God as He is. 00:35:51.840 --> 00:35:53.360 So this is so critical. 00:35:53.360 --> 00:36:01.039 So I just want to end our time today with that prayer that we would actually fulfill this and get to know God as He is. 00:36:01.039 --> 00:36:15.440 So, Father, we're thankful for who you are and who you've revealed yourself to be, both the things we can imitate and then, Lord, even the things that we stand in awe that we cannot even begin to imagine being like. 00:36:15.440 --> 00:36:45.199 And we thank you for your Son Jesus, who you sent to reveal yourself in not only just in the creation, Lord, we see it, but we also see by sending your son, we can know a personal have a personal picture, a personal uh uh example that we can look at and see that you are the indeed the image of the invisible God that you sent your son Jesus, that we can see something in reality to know
