The Historic Lynwood Podcast

Coming Attractions, June 13, Mountain Climbing and The Meaning of Life

Kevin Lynch Season 2

The meaning of life. Mountain Climbing, the Sisyphusian challenge of getting to the summit of whatever metaphorical hill has commandeered the soul. In many cases this passionate all consuming endeavor becomes our singular mission in life. As should be. We all need a noble purpose, a higher meaning, a spiritual cause de vivre to keep the creative blood flowing. Challenge does that. Movies do that, Music does that. Literature, art, and perhaps most importantly the simple act of helping our fellow man by giving a loaf of bread to the malnourished does it by being a part of something larger than ourselves. Like our community, our tribe, our extended family. Mountain Climbing, yes!

I will be brief with the film synopsis in order to direct you to the landing page of the above bolded, underlined, italicized and altogether amplified event taking place next Wednesday, the summer solstice and longest day of the year, June 21.

YOU HURT MY FEELINGS. Any decent film will, should, must have a message, some subtle or on the nose take on an issue of social importance. Love and war being the two most common. Everybody has something to say about them, but not everyone has the creative chops to write, film or sing about them. That is why storytellers, minstrels and actors have been held in high regard by civilization since the dawn of man. Thank you Arthur Clark and Stanley Kubrick. What is all this about? What is any part of it about? Love, actually. And You Hurt My Feelings reminds us in a very delicate, honest way that to keep love, one must work at it. This universal fact is missed by a large slice of the global population pie chart. See this movie to feel good about the hope we all share for a better tomorrow.

THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS. The Italian Alps share the billing with two men whose mission in life is to ‘conquer’ them. How do you ‘beat’ a mountain range? You don’t, but you CAN live harmoniously and contentedly with them. Is this the lesson the two learn over the course of the forty years we follow them? What are the secrets they learn on their journey to the top? Why does struggle play such a pivotal role in the trek towards victory? There is a message here, and hopefully one we won’t have to hurt quite so badly as they probably will in their vertiginous and spiritual quest for meaning. Starts Friday, come and find out.

THE LONGEST DAY. Fifteen hours (15) of movies, music, food and this one-day opportunity to support the arts in the historic venue known as The Lynwood Theatre. From 9 in the morning until midnight we will rock the historic casbah. Dang, I am already out of space here, so please steer over to our donation page and park your philanthropy securely in our reserved area. Remember that the larger your contribution the greater your reward - and I am pretty sure that you can write it off as a charitable donation. At the very least you will receive the good will, gratitude and adoration of your movie loving friends, and indeed the universal brotherhood of man.

And that my friends is the meaning of life.

See ya soon at the HLT.
