Wes Anderson’s latest work, Asteroid City is, in my opinion, a milestone event of spectacular portions. Where else can you, in the same seat, witness grief and loss, soaked-hanky pathos, puzzle-box structural envelopment, fundamental narrative reality, fables of fairytale comic book storytelling (as artificial constructs) simulations of transparent surrealism, confectionary sets with deliberately sophomoric absurdism, magical transformations with moral and ethical schoolings, and an objective narrative of a stage play, its theatrical performance and the movie it inspired? Typical Wes, you say. Perhaps, but this one, to me, feels like it is Wes (and Roman Coppola) writing with the sole intention of outdoing themselves. Considering his impressive and voluminous body of work, that is no easy task. Has he succeeded? While that might not be the right question, my answer is that….it doesn’t matter. For any student of the game, in this case the game of the art of making movies, said student, through the joyous effort of a single viewing, will immediately see Asteroid City as a Master Class in the art of filmmaking. And for that alone we should all be grateful, and combine our raspy and tired voices in a rousing chorus of hallelujiah.

On Sunday afternoon, 5:30 being afternoon this time of year, we have the privledge of premiering Bill Marler’s book turned movie, POISONED. Bill will be here to intro the documentary and along with author Jeff Benedict, Herb Weisbaum from Komo TV , and host a Q&A session afterwards. You will remember the story from 1992 that caught the eyes, ears and hearts of America as kids, with Seattle as the epicenter, started getting sick from E. Coli O157:H7, an insidious bacteria delivered by undercooked hamburgers from Jack in the Box. Bill successfully defended the kids and their families jumping through fire hoops and miles of legal red tape to do so. He is a long tome Islander, a crusader for the rights and safeties  of us all, and now the subject of the Netflix documentary. Trust me on this one my friends, this movie, Bill’s charisma and the impact of his work on the American food industry will change the way you look at fast food. And food in general, and life in extreme generality. Author Jeff Benedict has a long resume of non-fiction best sellers and this one is no different. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, hosting Bill on our podcast last week and now I eagerly anticipate the red-carpet premiere on Sunday. Hope to see you here.

All for today folks. Thank you one and all for your support and generosity on Wednesday’s Cheers to 87 Years fund raising event. We dished out 15 hours of non-stop entertainment, collated a few donations (including a cool K from Bill) and, most importantly, put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces. I have been given the green-light to do an encore presentation for our 88th next year. So please stick around. Because, like Wes and Bill, I always strive to outdo my last effort.

Peace and love.

Kevin
