Coming Attractions, Aug 15, Irish Cinema (Better than Guinness)
August 15, 2023
It is Better than Guinness the slogan says. We proved it with Belfast and we proved it again with The Banshees of Inisherin. It is now time to celebrate some Irish cinema once again starting Friday. Is that slogan blasphemy of sorts? Who could ever possibly top the international standard for stout ales and brazenly brag about it? Perhaps an upstart brewery on another island thousands of miles from Dublin who’s product is available in the only theatre in the USA where you can find it on tap, perfectly chilled to 38 degrees and ready to accompany your Irish Cinema viewing experience? The beer is called Battle Point Stout and the film pairing is The Miracle Club, starting Friday. How is that for an opening? Tasty? Aye. The schedule:
Tuesday, Aug 15, THE LESSON @ 4:20 & 6:45 (Open Captioned)
Wednesday & Thursday, Aug 16&17, THE LESSON @ 4:20 & 6:45
Friday, Aug 18, THE MIRACLE CLUB @ 4:25 & 6:35
Sat & Sun, Aug 19&20, THE MIRACLE CLUB @ 2:15, 4:25 & 6:35
Mon to Thurs, Aug 21 to 24, THE MIRACLE CLUB @ 4:25 & 6:35 (Tuesday is Open Captioned)
Here is the storyline for THE MIRACLE CLUB, Directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, written by Joshua Mauer, Kathy Bates and Maggie Smith and starring Laura Lining, Kathy Bates, Maggie Smith and Stephen Rhea. An All-Star cast if ever there was one!
Ballygar, Ireland, 1967. A hard-knocks community in outer Dublin marches to its own drum beat rooted in traditions, loyalty, faith and togetherness. There is just one tantalizing dream for the women of Ballygar to taste freedom and escape the gauntlet of domestic life; to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes. And with a little benevolent interference from their cheeky and rebellious priest and close friends, Lily, Eileen and Shiela are the “lucky” trio to win the ticket of a lifetime at their riotous local raffle night.
We’ll offer T-Shirts and pint glasses as specials, along with the aforementioned dark stout, in celebration of the arrival of another round of Irish cinema starting Friday. You will have to listen for the code to get in on the special. Or simply say, "where's my shirt." Although I feel that sometimes we make it too easy. But getting free stuff while watching a movie and sipping a beer touted as BTG (better than Guinness) SHOULD be easy, no?
Please note that local filmmaker Andrew Taylor will be hosting his second annual Film Camp next week Aug, 21-23 HERE at the Historic Lynwood Theatre. Call him direct to register at 715.441.3500 or here at the HLT, 206.451.4336. It is open to Middle and High Schoolers.
THE LESSON, is a fine film definitely worth your viewing attention (and an IPA). Last three showing days are tonight (OCAP) and Wednesday and Thursday at 4:20 & 6:45 all three nights. Good authors borrow but great ones steal.
Special thanks to the Gothard Sisters, who will be appearing here next March by popular demand, for the intro and outro bumpers featured on today's 'cast.. Their harmonious blend of traditional Irish instrumentation always makes me smile. It’s the Irish in me I guess. We like to smile.
Especially when we say, “It’s better than Guinness.”
Love ya,
Kevin
