There you have it. GOLDA for two weeks. We do have three films that are listed as ‘confirmed’ on our weekly update from our broker, that I will take the chance on announcing while not 100% guaranteed, they are:

Theatre Camp (I have been running the trailer for awhile now and it looks like fun), Jules and Stop Making Sense, the remastered concert footage from Jonathan Deeme featuring the David Byrne and the Talking Heads, s release that several of our regulars have suggested and several others have recommended. Looks like we might get it for a two night special with screenings on 9.29 and 10.6.

OK, the obligatory few words about GOLDA. You know the story on 1973’s Yom Kippur War, no? It was a very nasty affair looking like it might seduce the USSR and ourselves to do more than simply supply their respective allies with jets, tanks, ammo and intel. At the time we were the only ‘super-powers’ with nuclear capabilities, making the turf war a proxy for Armageddon. Interestingly the aftermath of the failed coup by the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries directly led to the embargo of said liquid on the partner of their enemy, Israel. That partner was us. Do you remember the “energy crisis” of 1973 and ’74? “Energy Crisis” being .gov double-speak for the sudden scarcity of Saudi crude as the OPEC countries flexed their marketing geo-political muscle and dialed down their production of oil for our gas guzzling American consumers. Do you also remember who the ace diplomat representing the US was in charge of negotiations with the aforementioned parties? Does the name Henry Kissinger ring a bell? I will refrain from wishing him a happy 100th birthday for the solid fact that he should be in jail and not blowing out candles on a layer cake. More on that here.

The point is, as we saw with Oppenheimer, as we saw with JFK, as we saw with just about every biopic since Moses and Ben Our, is that writers and directors sometimes take creative license to tell their stories. GOLDA is no exception. I was mildly appalled, greatly irritated maybe, that ‘good ol Henry’ was portrayed as a hero, or super statesman, in his brief screen time. I was hoping someone would have the cinematic guts to take this war criminal down, throw the constitution at him, lock him up and then throw away the key. But no, this isn’t that story. Perhaps thankfully so. Regardless, here is a comment culled from Rotten Tomatoes, where GOLDA currently sits at a 44%/85% split, another critics vs public upside-down cake.

Mirren portrays Meir in her darkest days at the height of the 1973 Yom Kippur War with empathy and loving subtlety. It’s hard to imagine anyone doing it better, and this is territory that was once mined by Ingrid Bergman...

Lastly today, remember that Monday is Labor Day so we will be adding an early show to make it easy for you to come in and see for yourselves what went on behind the scenes during the three weeks that comprised the infamous Yom Kippur War. You can even boo and hiss when Kissinger appears.

Thanks as always , see ya soon at the HLT
