Come frolic with us Thursday night as the World Famous Irish trio The Gothard Sisters take the stage for a pre St. Patricks Day celebration. Tickets here. I've got a spare keg of Bainbridge Island Brewing's - better than Guinness - Battle point Stout on tap and ready to go. A pint and a traditional Irish ditty - what could be better than that? Doors open at 6:15 Thursday. Get here early to grab a seat near the stage.
I was a touch disappointed in Sunday’s 95th special celebrating all things Hollywood. Disappointed yes, surprised, no. I became an Everything, Everywhere, All at Once fan about fifteen seconds into its initial screening here at the Historic Lynwood. Maybe less. Being a long suffering fanboy of Michelle Yeoh since Ang Lee’s inimitable Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon way back at the turn of the last century, the last 23 years have been frustrating. She is, has been and I am quite sure, always will be, sensational. She now has an Oscar. As does just about everyone involved with the making of the film. Best Film, Best Female Actor. Best Supporting, Male and Female, Screenplay, Director, Editing, and on and on, ad nasuem. Do I sound like a jealous lover? Well, OK, maybe I am. But I plead nolo contendre your Honor. What about Banshees? What about Tar? What about Elvis? Moreover, what about my long-shot favorites, EO and Women Talking? Sour grapes you say? Some call it wine. Some see the glass as half full and some, many, feel that the only true value of winning is in losing. One must pay one’s dues, yo?
My hope, my faith and a dash of my trust lies in the adage of ‘what comes next is always up to us’. After all it is inevitably our reaction to the reality of circumstance that opens the portal to the guiding light of tomorrow. Did we learn anything in the process? I’ll bet you we did. Fact is, l’ll wager that we learned a lot. I’ll also suggest that Colin Ferrell, Austin Butler, Cate Blanchette, Barry Keoghan, Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Sarah Polley, and yes, even Stevie Spielberg, Sam Mendes and my local filmmaker pals, Rachel Noll James, Andrew Taylor, Garrett Bennett and Peter Kohn, did too.
This is what I learned: Innovation, hyper-creativity and risk are the big three. Do those three traits describe to any degree what The Daniels put up on our screen (with an assist from our projectionist) and walked away with a truckload of Oscar gold as a result?
Moral of this story is that it is all about the story (sorry I couldn’t help it) the moral is, and this is a part of the speech delivered by Woody in The Champions: That no matter the result when the final buzzer sounds, you should be proud to have been part of the process, to have persevered to get to here, this point, where your work, or play, is being critically, and sometimes absurdly so, picked apart and judged by, literally, 10,000 armchair producers, directors, coaches and commentators. Win or lose today, you are already Champions.
And I salute you.
