THE COMMENTARY:
First: VICTIMS of LOVE rocked the joint Saturday night.
THE CRITIC.
Ian McKellen is a master. How would YOU like to play Gandalf the Grey? In The CRITIC his 85 years of preparation see him as a snooty theatre critic in London. Agatha Christie would feel right at home sitting in her mezzanine box watching this drama turned who-done-it unfold.
THE APPRENTICE. This is an expert from Ali Abbasi, Director of THE APPRENTICE. “My calculation was that the Americans didn’t have the balls to do this movie themselves — and I didn’t really turn out to be wrong. (Laughs) But irony aside, I came on board because of two things. A lot of the possible American filmmakers who would have been great for this did not want to risk their careers. You can go back to Elia Kazan, or look at less dramatic examples, but everyone in this industry knows it’s generally not helpful to your career to do a political film here. So, no one else wanted to do it, and I thought it was important that someone try.
The other thing is that I’m an outsider, so I have an inherently non-partial, non-partisan perspective, you know? I don’t support Democrats. I don’t support Republicans. I come from the Middle East, so a lot of this is like complete political theater to me. We’re used to getting the short end of the stick in the Middle East. When you’re living down under the palace, and the palace is leaking sewage into your village, it doesn’t really matter whether the guy who’s in the palace is an environmentally conscious king or a total asshole — that sewage smells just as bad, you know? So I think my outsider perspective allowed me to look at figures as polarizing and colorful as Mr. Trump and Roy Cohn with clarity to say: We need to deal with these guys.”
.I AM GRETA. Continuing our run of inspirational and moving films, the one hits home as a precursor to the NO ON I-2117 campaign. Following the FREE screening, Councilman Greg Nance, Mayor Joe Deets and moderator John Kydd will discuss the impact of this initiative (or lack thereof) for every Islander. We are hoping Jay Inslee accepts our invitation to attend and speak. Doors open at 6:30.
MUSIC FOR MUSHROOMS. MMUSIC FOR MUSHROOMS
Music for Mushrooms is a narrative documentary highlighting the personal journey of shamanistic musician and filmmaker East Forest (Krishna-Trevor Oswalt) – a collaborator of the late Ram Dass – whose bold experiments pair music with guided psychedelic experiences to create spaces of healing for a fractured world.
The film captures East Forest as he discovers a practice of guided ceremonial concerts that offer participants an immersive environment to confront their pain and fears, fostering hope, and moving them to re-engage with their own true north. Containing intimate emotional encounters with individuals whose lives are changed with music, spirituality, nature, and psychedelics, it's a highly resonant ode to the transformative potential of art and introspection in a world aching for healing, enlightenment, and togetherness.
