THE COMMENTARY.
I will be blunt. You need to buy your tickets for the big NYE Celebration quick. Like right now. This read will be here when you return. Here is the link.
COMPLETE UNKNOWN. Although Timothee Chalamet does an excellent job of covering about two dozen early Dylan songs, and effectively captures the ‘essential’ Dylan mannerisms and mysteriousness, every scene in which Pete Seeger, brilliantly played by Ed Norton, appears, he appears as a blatant thief, stealing every scene. Should his performance fail to garner a Best Supporting Oscar, we are all doing it wrong. Elle Fanning also nails the most emotional scene, watching her BF from the stage wings as he lovingly duets with Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. Heart breaking without saying a word.
RAINIER: A BEER ODYSSEY. I was in the advertising, marketing and promotion business not long after Don Draper stole THAT show. There are two types of ads: Those that work and those that don’t. As far back as 1974, everyone in the GPNW, and in those days the Northwest truly WAS great, knew that the RAINIER BEER ad campaign was something special. Revolutionary, brilliant, risky and ribald, they audaciously changed the culture of our mossy upper left corner of the States. Almost overnight! As the teaser suggests - you know the ads, but not the story. I’ve been playing the trailer for a week now and it never gets old. The 126 minute epic documentary screens only once on NYE at 5:30. Up from Tacoma to intro and host a post screening talk-back will be producer Justin Peterson. This one is a keeper folks, your attendance again falls into the “must see” category.
HONEY MOON. The hubby and wifey Kitley’s from this eclectic local quartet have been making the busker Island rounds of late - to great appreciation and success. Adding a steel pedal guitar and a drum kit makes perfect sonic sense as their repertoire brings an amalgam of classic, traditional, recognizable and adventurous variations on themes by a collection of masters from Bach to The Beatles. They take the stage immediately after the Q&A with Justin ends, maybe 8:20 or so. We need a little time to set up.
BATUKA. Headlining this year’s celebration is BATUKA, back for another set of soothing and stylish tunes immediately recognizable as The Sound of Santana. If you missed their show in January, this is the last chance to see them in 2024. The seven piece ensemble will rock us all the way to Midnight creating an opportunity and experience not moon to be forgotten. Did I mention where to go to get your tickets? No. OK, try this one.
You can always save the outrageous on-line transaction fees by simply coming down to the HLT and purchasing your tickets directly from the source. Make it a date, head down Monday to see COMPLETE UNKNOWN and pickup you tickets for the very next night: NEW YEAR’S EVE at THE HISTORIC LYNWOOD. You will be mucho glad you did. Guaranteed!
See you here. And in case you missed it, the tix link:
Thanks so very much.
