THE COMMENTARY.

Before we begin with today’s commentary, I feel obliged to pass judgment on this date in History. J6, as it has come to be called, is a black spot on the timeline of US History. We have had many, but an insurrection of the US Capitol, vaguely in response to a “stolen” election, is the bleakest. Worse, four years later the catalyst of said treason, has both escaped justice and retribution for these heinous acts, and has been re-elected to again ‘lead’ the people towards life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Anyone paying the slightest bit of non-Faux News attention will quickly see the hypocrisy in this, and recognize that incarceration, censorship and a blanket of suffering has replaced the three constitutional, unalienable and self-evident rights listed above. We are in for a rocky ride folks and these neo-Nazi’s will be coming for us in the PNW hard. This to make an example of what persecution awaits other ‘sanctuary cities’ and blue states that prefer honesty to deceit, love to hate and tolerance to oppression. Those non believers in the lies and gaslighting. A populace who, despite evidence to the contrary, believe in liberty and justice for all, not just the filthy rich. I for one, will use every tool in my kit to resist a complete takeover by the racist, misogynistic, greedy, bastards 49% of the country somehow thinks are decent enough human beings to hold public office. Where are the protest songsmiths when we really need them?

Glad you asked. Because our current film, COMPLETE UNKNOWN, deftly scratches the surface on another place and time, 1961-1965, when racial tensions and political rhetoric were in direct opposition to the “voice of the people”. Several of that era’s superstars, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger play prominent roles in this tight, dramatic non-biopic take on those troubling times. MLK, The Kennedy’s and The Beatles provide a historical backdrop to the magical moment when we transitioned from an acoustic culture to an electric one. How I wish we could plug in again and move the vibration loudly towards the light and out of the coming darkness.

For the sake of reference, we have had COMPLETE UNKNOWN for 13 days now, and it has passed OPPENHEIMER and KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON into the number two spot on our attendance standings, trailing only BOYS IN THE BOAT. Averaging 51 people per show through Sunday, a tip of the HLT cap to Director James Mangold, Timothee Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning and Ed Norton for their stunning performances. An interesting note on those 1,600 patrons, and one I find particularly indicative of a quality cinematic production, is this: I have yet to hear one negative comment about it. Not one. Not even a so-so or meh.

I will leave you with this today as it seems particularly poignant and timely.
