Please note the BOLD MON, JAN 20 - SELMA @ 4:20. It’s BOLD because it’s FREE. That’s right a FREE MLK Day screening of the award-winning, critically acclaimed story of how a united and courageous group of American citizens proudly proclaimed their equality. Here. In the USA. In 1965. Sound outrageous? It is, was and forever will be. We thought it might be a fitting response to the lies and filth emulating from the Nation’s Capitol today. They want to go back to those days. The days of white bullies and oppression. As we have seen, and as we will surely see again, Selma is not that far from Seattle.. Know your History. SELMA is Rated PG-13, so bring the leaders of tomorrow, you know, your kids. Did I mention the FREE part? BIG Thanks to sponsor SILVER LININGS PLANNING SOLUTIONS.

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT. I lifted this juicy one from Peter Travers over at ABC NEWS (I’m not real happy with them, either) but Peter is one of the 130 Top Critics at RT who have compiled their expertise into a 100% composite. In her first fiction feature, documentarian director Payal Kapadia brings a poetic profundity to this cinematic spellbinder about female sisterhood in a big city (Mumbai) full of societal, economic and political pressures that can force out intimacy and dreams. We must be one of the very few houses screening it because on opening night we had a handful of Seattleites in attendance, all leaving with satisfied grins of celestial delight.

THE BRUTALIST. Oh boy, where to start? Hungary,1940? Pennsylvania half a decade later? It dawned on me yesterday that when Director Bradley Corbet writes this epic tome about a brutalist, he is in reference to art, his trade, and not about his social skills, Brutalism, of course, being a genre of architecture as noir is to film. Further, as the dawning light gained intensity, that both Frank Lloyd Wright and Francis Ford Coppola would certainly approve. Imagine creating art that meets this discriminating criteria! Rare indeed. It is the story of a Jewish immigrant coming to America, settling in Pennsylvania, and attracting the attention of a wealthy industrialist, played by Guy Pierce. Note: Sprawling might be the adjective, but lengthwise its running time is the adverb - long as it describes total duration, broken tin two parts by a 15 minute timed intermission. Be first in the concession line!
