THE COMMENTARY

And so we wrap February of ’25 with a flourish. A few quick notes on our pair of fresh films making grand red-carpet debuts.

QUEER. Yes, Bond, James Bond, was an all-time epic bad-ass, but it took more stones than a license to kill ever did for Daniel Craig to jump into a role the magnitude of Luca Guadagnino’s cover of the William S. Burroughs novella, QUEER. Color me impressed. Nice job 007 and an A for effort. We’ve been playing the trailer for a couple of weeks now and it is mezmerizingly haunting. Which, if you have seen CHALLENGERS, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME or BONES AND ALL, makes perfect thematic sense. Oh, and that sensual cover of ALL APOLOGIES is done by none other than Sinead O’Connor, who is joined by a Tarantino-esque collection of musical all-stars worthhy of the admission price alone. Truth be known, I was never a huge Burroughs fan - but I loved the company he kept and their work. One can always see connection when genius gathers.

I’M STILL HERE. Is getting some Eleventh-hour nods for Best Picture. The historical fiction (based on the true story) drama of a Brazilian family torn apart by a fascist dictator is grippingly intense. Go right ahead and make all the comparisons to the evil regimes of Hitler, Pol Pot, Gowan, Kim Sung, Leopold II, Mao Zedung and Trump you like because all are legit. People die, children starve and families are forever devastated and traumatized at the hands of corrupt, power-hungry, narcissistic, sociopaths wrapped in flags and waiving bibles. Take a look around folks. They are coming for us. Which is a cautionary and convenient segue into….

Big HLT thanks to all who came out to see FROM GROUND ZERO. The 22 shorts, terrifying and inspirational war stories from Gaza, were intense illustrations of politics and power put into play by those who consider genocide to simply be collateral damage amid the bloody conquest for beach-front Mediterranean property, as approved by Putin, Jesus, Allah, Jehovah and/or Abraham. I cried. Trump wants to relocate the Palestinians and build condos. This is US policy? I resist. The answer is art. God save the storytellers and poets.

For the third year running, local filmmaker Andrew Taylor and I will discuss the upcoming Academy Awards in a special ‘cast Sunday, hopefully to be dropped on Monday as well as this regular feature.

We have also signed CELTIC CROSSROADS NW as a sponsor for a ST PATRICK’S DAY (or one day that weekend) Irish themed movie, much in the same manner that we presented SELMA and HARRY & SALLY on MLK Day and Valentine’s Day, respectively. Please stay tuned for details. Lastly I am working to assemble a Town Hall in the upcoming weeks. After all, we are a community sanctuary promoting the positive exchange of ideas and the ideals of a free and open forum for discourse. Because it can’t happen here, right?
