HLT#147 - DAVID KIYOSHI TOM & KERWIN BERK of KINTSUKUROI

It isn’t always about previewing something to come - sometimes it’s important to look back and review what has already happened. Today, we turn and review events, to learn and act hoping to ensure that an atrocity from 83 years ago, literally in our backyards, is not repeated. Nidoto nai yoni. Let it Not Happen Again. My guests today are actor, and 1987 UW grad, David Kiyoshi Tom and filmmaker Kerwin Berk, two of the major players in the production of the film KINTSUKUROI. Thursday night, a mere 48 hours ago, we screened KINTUSUKUROI to a jam-packed, sold-out crowd here at the Historic Lynwood Theatre. It was electric, dynamic and emotional, the trifecta of platitudes describing the movie going experience, and something rare in this age of stunted attention spans. The event was co-sponsored by St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association.

Our chat with David and Kerwin took place the afternoon of the event, with our land line ringing off the hook and cell phones pinging in the background, all indicative of the activity and excitement leading up to the evening’s festivities, each a part creating the atmosphere of what was about to transpire; The atmosphere of change, the need for urgency, a reverential ode to the giants that have gone before us and a healthy respect for the courage of our elders who gave all to protect our democratic freedoms, freedoms that are once again being threatened today.

In retrospect, I would like to personally thank everyone who came out Thursday night and participated in the event. I challenge you to take the lessons learned and pass them along, to your children, to the deniers, in your homes, schools and most importantly in your community. The power we must use today to defeat these oppressors is the same one our Grandparents used to defeat Nazi Germany over 80 years ago. Never Again we said then, and Never Again we say now.

For more information on KINTSUJUROI, David and Kerwin please spend some time here. Let’s all be a part of the solution.

Thanks for listening,

Kevin
