THE PENGUIN LESSONS. Starring Oscar nominee Steve Coogan, this poignant dramedy from director Peter Cattaneo (Full Monty) follows an Englishman's personal and political awakening after he adopts a penguin during a cataclysmic period in Argentine history (1977). Footnote: There is a reason why three tissue boxes rest atop the baby grand and ready for use in the lobby. This is a terrific film and required viewing for anyone with a beating heart.

BOB TREVINO LIKES IT. Heartwarming story of a young woman, scorned by her father and seeking solace in what many would call the wrong places. Not bars, saloons or honky-tonks, but on-line. A Tracie Laymon film staring John Leguizamo and Barbie Ferreira. 141 minutes, rated PG and with a 97% Popometer at RT. Remember the tissue boxes.

THE BARN will host a special presentation on woodworking, and all its philosophical metaphors, on April 12 featuring a documentary on GEORGE NAKASHIMA. His Filmmaker nephew John will be in attendance to host a Q & A. This will be a night to remember, as the legend of NAKASHIMA has local connections, historical significance and cultural relevancy. You might say live edge woodworking is the art of zen. 6:30 on April 12. Pin it.

*April 16 STEVE ROMEIN and his COMMON POWER coalition will host a screening of HANSON HOSSEIN’s latest doc AMERICAN DIGNITY at 6:45 which will include a panel discussion and talk-back. One show only and free to the public.

April 17, NEIL YOUNG’s latest doc, directed by his wifey Darryl Hannah HAS BEEN CANCELLED. So sorry, snafu with the distributors. (NOT TicketMaster this time).

*April 18, 19, & 20 we will do double documentary duty with the screening of two powerful docs, the above mentioned AMERICAN DIGNITY and WHITE with FEAR. After both have been screened we’ll host an open mic in the attempt to answer the one question we all seem to be asking: What exactly do we do about all this? Please join us, all are welcome.

April 24 @ 6:30. MARCIE’S. A John Helde film about a popular local bartender standing up to the evil developers who want to turn her tavern into condos. Shot in Seattle and North Bend. Writer, director and cast will be here for post screening Q&A.

Local legend MINOR MORIARITY and his trio, FRANCIS NASH; MIKE HOMMEL on drums and DAVE REES on bass, will light it up on April 26, doors at 6, show at 7. With special guest. Tickets on sale here and now.

Colleen Fisher will host RESCUED HEARTS, Part One, doc on May 10. Tix here.

Today, as I write this, it is Saturday, April 5th. In a few hours I will be attending the HAND’S OFF demonstration in Winslow. With any luck at all I might have a short highlight piece up by Sunday night. Way to go Islanders, you are now officially a part of the solution. Because giving the keys to someone who is chauffered about like a King is not who we are. And we're not gonna take it.
