BIG special thanks and appreciative nods to Colleen Fisher for all her behind the scenes effort in bringing RESCUED HEARTS to the HLT on Saturday afternoon. Over 150 turned out to watch the moving testimony to the magical bond between Man and Horse. We hope to have the entire doc back in the fall for a post festival encore screening.

ON SWIFT HORSES.  Here is the cheat-sheet of allegorical tropes buried in shallow metaphorical graves beneath the parched post-war San Diego/Las Vegas/Kansas triangulation: The American Dream, Hidden Lives and Secrets, Queer Love and Identity, Social Commentary and Individual Journeys. After the final show last night, several folks, all regulars who stayed for the entire credit crawl, and I, engaged in a spirited and deeply honest convo about the film, one we all agreed was amazing. This is such a rich, well crafted and emotional period piece that its sheer beauty is almost overlooked, and one, that will take even the most dedicated cinephile a while to decompress and unpack. Ends Thursday, so make your plans.

We have officially chosen the next month’s films - after a careful analysis of those available - and due to space limitations, I’ll just tip what’s in store: Following THE ACCOUNTANT 2 (Ben Affleck gets it) we’ll see JANE AUSTEN WRECKED MY LIFE staring May 30 and then the highly anticipated THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME by master auteur Wes Anderson, staring June 6. Yes, summer is here.

MAY 28, JAPANESE HERITAGE NIGHT! With more local (and international) sponsors than I have the space to name here, Stephanie Reese presents a multi-media event as headliner for the week long series, featuring a presentation by Suyematsu Farms, a dance by UV Performing Arts and our screening of ONE FIGHTING IRISHMAN, all followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Sharon Yamato, local Council member Clarence Moriwaki and Sam Omoto. 6-8pm on the 28th.

JUNE 7, STANDING TOGETHER RALLY FOR DEMOCRACY. Local activists John Kydd and Mike Kelly have assembled a cast including Mayor Ashley Matthews, Councilman Greg Nance, Congressperson Emily Randall and reps from the Suquamish Tribe, along with non-profit leaders, musicians and poets to better understand the current threat to our democracy and the actions we can take. TO RIGHT THIS SINKING SHIP. Noon - 2, free admission.
